Exactly! They want us switching detectors and not just coils.

Unless there is a chip in that coil somewhere, it only means that we have to buy other coils from Coiltek or Detech, etc.... Maybe they will release other coils or they just don't care about additional coils. Maybe not worth investing the R&D on them.

I'd be curious to know the source of this information (GB disabled)?

That's not what the EQX manual states, it says it's constantly receiving ground feedback with M-IQ to adjust for ground conditions.  For me, that's worked so well that I rarely do a ground balance, except for the most mineralized ground.

That was when I was talking about the GPX 5000. I think it was Simon that said the GPX ground balance is disabled when using Coin/Relic, so when I was ground balancing, I wasn't really doing anything 😄

With the Mono coils provided as standard equipment and no mention of iron reject, I suspect iron reject is not an included feature and possibly also not compatible with legacy GPX coils (ML or 3rd party).  If that is the case, it won’t be very popular with the relic hunter crowd other than the fact that it does appear to be lighter, weatherproof, and no cables flopping about.  If it had/has iron reject and legacy GPX DD coil compatibility - no brainer for me, there would be a used GPX 4800 up on the classifieds board tomorrow.  But without it, would have to wait for a highly discounted, lightly used “oops why did I but this?” unit.

But Simon, it has a built-in loudspeaker!

I agree. As a relic hunter and beach hunter, it's the auto functionality of it that bothers me most. I'd be shocked if the machine will match my GPX 5000 ability to find dime and penny size targets at 15-20" deep. Also I would guess that EMI functionality was probably not improved much if any. In rural areas, the EMI is very different that the ones I get in coastal areas at some beaches. We shall see, but I won't rush to get one.

  4. Well you definitely dug a lot of target. Bottle caps are hard to pass on for me too, especially when they are deep. I made myself a promise that the next time out I am only digging very faint signals, since the shallow stuff is probably junk. We'll see how it goes 😄 The AQ is a enjoyable machine to swing and when the conditions are right, I bet you find a lot of gold that was missed. I think the small ones or the broken band ones, are the ones I expect to find. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do again.

Did you ever think the reason you can't hear those pinpointers so well might be threshold shift from standing in front of those 8 (16?)  12" speakers on 11 did you ?? LOL  The ringing drowns it out.

For some reason I can say it's possible. I SAID FOR SOME REASON I CAN SAY IT'S POSSIBLE .

skuh kuh kuh kuh kuh and it only took me 40 years to find out.

Good luck on a quick fix whatever you decide to do.

Looks like even the repairs need a QC dept.

Probably micro components on the pcb too ....it IS hard to test/repair things you can barely see !.

(I don't remember seeing a schematic in an owners manual since the 80s...)

LOL Yep the ears take a beating, but how come I can hear the waves so well just not the pinpointer over them. Seriously I wish they would have a more robust volume control, like metal detectors or some headphones have.  I abandoned the option of trying to repair it because of the micro components. Not much you can do unless someone has already found the cause of the problem. I'm sure it's a reoccurring issue that pin pointers have. I have read of the same issue a while back, so I don't think I am alone. I'll just switch brands and take what is available, hoping someone will make a better pin pointer for the beach.

Not all electronic devices are created equally these days....

Some are built in a better part of China ???

Plus QC seems to have become the consumer sending something back or into the circular file.

That's all I got on that.

    .

Hey School , did you try bringing the Marshall and plug it in ?  I'd suggest a half stack for portability...

But seriously there are the little battery mini stacks...... just need a speaker jack on the pointer.

I need a kid to lug that stack for me 😄 We don't do half stacks 😲 Funny about the little battery mini stacks too. Looks like Marshall will lend it's name if the price is right for just about anything. Here's a gift I received. It's a Marshall head that is a key port. You get mini 1/4" jacks that are key chains. When you get home you just plug your keys into the head.  Love it.  As for QC, I think these days, they think it means "Quit Crying" over our poor quality control!

If I posted a pic of it, I think Santa would take away my dealership.

Now maybe a could post subliminal messages by having a 5000 box and a 1000 box next to it.

    A GPX-5000 technology + an SDC-2300 technology = 5000 + Monster 1000 = 6000 technology.

    Or a ZED 7000 box on top of  ( minus) a GM1000 box = 6000.

OR........... you could just post a picture of it and lose your dealership 😄 Just making sure you have all your options available

Hi Mike, the area I was hunting was very trashy so I opted for tone. I have quite a few places to use ALL METAL. I know I am losing inches with TONE but my strategy was to see how the detector performs at that location. My beaches are not the fluffy soft sand on the ocean. I am detecting the CT shoreline which is rocky, clayish, and mineralize sand and very compact. Depth is a few inches less compared to the fluffy stuff.

If you see another AQ out there in CT, it is probably me 😄 Good luck out there.

  9. Thanks everyone for the responses.  One pinpointer after being repaired, lasted a good amount of time, Probably 1-2 years. The second pinpointer repaired (both were sent in at the same time) was to be my spare unit. It worked when I got it back and then sat on the shelf for the year or so. Turned it on and it was broken again. I never got to use it at all. So no water or dirt damage to that one. Garrett's prices were great, just like White's repair prices were too. I'm just a bit disappointment that my back up unit was dead when I needed it. I would pay $200 for a pinpointer if it  had the depth of the Pistol Probe, the waterproofing of the Garrett Carrot, the reliability of a Lexus, and the volume of my Marshall😄 Is that too much to ask??

  10. Does anyone know specifically what goes wrong with the Garrett AT pin pointers? Both of mine were sent in previously, and both of them developed the same issue again. They turn on but do not detect any metal. Is it the electrolytic capacitor, the flat pack The IC or is it in the coil itself that is the problem? Is that long rod a radio frequency coil? I'm kinda getting tired of pin pointers dying like that. Any ideas would be helpful.

  11. Nice job. You are on a streak.... no pressure😄 Were you able to get an idea of how deep it was? I'm thinking there are probably more small rings left than big honkers. The really big ones are probably deep, hopefully out of reach of other machines. All the bigger new drops that are shallower, are being found by the competition. I went out yesterday to a small beach and had 3 other detectorists there already.

Even though I don't have the AQ yet I have felt this way at times. This summer I was on a hot streak finding gold 4 days in a row with the best find on that 4th day. I never posted that ring, in part, because it just seemed too much to believe. It was even hard for me to believe my luck that week.

When I finally got my Equinox I found gold with it for the first 8 straight beach hunts. Total of all gold (rings, small charms, etc) was around 30 targets. I posted it, even though I could hardly believe it myself. Then the beaches changed and I have not found any gold since. It now rest in the corner until I want to try it again. Streaks come with all machines for a number of reasons. When they are there ...life is good. When the gold stops.... I hate the machine 😂 If you find it, post it. We can always use your post as inspiration to get out there and hunt!!! The AQ is no different. I could not hit gold with it, while others were cleaning the beaches of gold. I finally hit 2 gold with it. I will continue to use the AQ because it is capable of getting deep gold. It's up to me to find out where it is.

I didn't say that you were ridiculous. I said your reason for not posting your finds was ridiculous.  🙂

Who cares if someone might think you are bragging. Ignore them. Their opinion means nothing.

I agree. On most forums, people will call you a liar and say you didn't really find that. Then the mob mentality takes over and before you know it, most people stop posting their finds and advice. Posting here is a bit different, and you should not worry about posting, especially if you have been posting finds for a while. If someone is brand new and is an unknown, then maybe I would look at their post with some skepticism, but someone who not only posts, but interacts providing their settings, advice, tricks they learned, has an established reputation. I for one would not doubt your finds even if you posted 20 gold rings, because I know it can happen on rare occasions. It never happens to me though 🤣

  14. Congrats on the gold. It took me a while to get my first gold as well. The conditions just dictate when we can reach the gold sometimes. From the sound of it, that area should produce more gold for you. Joe's battery is a must if you like to hunt worry free. I keep the stock batteries for back up, If I'm too lazy to charge Joe's. 😄 Not too bad on the junk targets too.

  15. I was out today to one of my favorite beaches with the AQ. I was excited to see a lot of rocks exposed for a good stretch. Unfortunately, I live 2 hours away from most beaches, so the locals have hammered that spot with PI's Excalibur's, Equinox's etc... Today, beaches have way more competition these days since detectors have become "cool" again 😄 Just junk and a couple of nickels. decided to just pull the GPX out and just coin hunt.
