  1. Spot on mate. An international gang of decent, passionate , knowledgeable and interesting detectorists so we are, and I agree fully ... we have a great forum here, i'm enjoying it immensely.

    Thanks for the luck JW,  I'm going out sweeping in about 3 hours, hitting a spot that has brought out 8 silvers so far, so your luck is appreciated!

    As a horrible fast food chain would say ...." I'm Loving it" ?

  2. Good hunting buddy.  Its a silver monster is the equinox!  Over 19 and ... BAM!!!   SILVER!!!!!!  Just have to watch out for the modern pennies at 23-24 and the two pence piece at 27-28.  However silver 9 times out of ten, does a triple VDI, like 19-20-21.

    Nice to see others loving the foxy too ?

  3. Hi Tometusns,

    Good to hear its hitting 7 inch'ers.

    Ive got to grab one, because in some area's there are coins very close to each other, and when that occurs, it messes with the VDI's terribly and gives unpredictable digs, usually resulting in 2 bits of tin and foil creating a juicy looking 19 VDI ... Arrrghhhh!!.

    Just waiting for them to land in the UK now. Shouldn't be too long as a dealer the other week said he was expecting them in on Thursday (of last week)!

    Thanks for your input so far, it is appreciated.

  4. Its clearly just an issue with a big stack of silver.  I know directly from experience last week that the nox loves individual silver coins, as i mopped up a huge number of them in only one day.  I tested a 9999 Austrian philharmonic one-ounce coin the other day, and it screamed a high 34!

    Whether its overload on the mimic hoard, i have no idea tbh.

  5. Found a handful of silvers last week.  I was wondering if anyone has been lucky enough to find a gold soverighn yet?  Fair enuff if you dont want to discolse that ? But would be interesting to know if they are out there.

    From what ive researched, the Victorians did seem to have them in their pockets at times, after all, a half sovereign was worth 120 pence, or 10 shillings.  Of which ive found loads. If only i could get in my delorean time machine and go exchange a few shillings for a few half sovereigns lol.

    Or a full sovereign, worth only 8 half crowns, again which ive got a few of.  Oh how i'd die if i found a sovereign, Its a bucket-Lister for sure.

    Cheers!

    Andy.

  6. I have realised that know one can rely on VDI numbers alone. But as we know, working together with tone response, we can at least give give ourselves the best possible chance of digging a good target.

    Tones are very distinct and take time and patience to learn, for example coins are very clean tones which have a unique but subtle signature. Target size is another indicator (Again as we know).

    This is a list of VDI's tested in soil and at depths i would expect to find certain coins. For example a 1 penny at 3 inches max.  A 1919 Penny at around 5 inches. (All depths from my own experience, yours may be different of course).

    There are lots of disclaimers involved with this experiment.  And the following can all effect VDI:

    1. Soil type/Wet/dry conditions

    2. Depth.

    3. Program type, i.e park 1/2 - field 1/2 etc. +other settings.

    4. Masked with other targets.

    5. Local EMI.

    Therefore to try and give as accurate data as possible, here were my settings for this test.

    Park 2 - 5 tones - sensitivity 19 - Recovery speed 4 - Iron bias 0 - and of course ground balances manually and EMI checked.

    BAD TARGETS:

    Modern Penny           = 24-25

    Modern 2 pence         = 27-28

    5p                                  = 11

    Ringpul                        = 15

    1 Pound (out of date) = 20-21

    Old Ten Pence             = 13

    GOOD TARGETS:

    Small silver Victorian sixpence = 21-22-23  (A nice little unique signature, as it skipped between the 3 VDI's. NICE!!!

    Large George third sixpence = 26-27-28 (Again a nice signature)

    1900 +1800 Penny  = 22-23

    Half penny                = 18-19

    Lead bullet (Bad tone)

    Threepence              = 22-23

    Two shilling              = 15-16

    One shilling               = 13

    Roman lead weight  = 16

    Roman bronze          = 11

    These were my results which i will stick (via sticky label) to my detector handle.  Would i not dig a target if its on the bad list?  Well again together with tone, i may still dig it.  Whether or not this is a good thing to do - (the sticker on my detector) , it still gives me an indicator, and that's fun and nice to know, and that's good enough.

    Happy hunting.
