  1. And so my research led me to LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) in the UK. Its incredible! Some sites are just reworked modern changes, but roman/medieval furrows are unmistakable, so are forts, mounds and village earthworks. Currently im scanning the landscape all around my area (within a 15 mile range at the moment). That's why i'm loving this hobby, because its not all about the cool detectors, the kit, the fun, the challenge and the exercise, but also much more about deep research, which involves a lot of thinking, and true history we can touch. Its got a lot going for it that's for sure! But i'm preaching to the converted i suppose ? The hobby has it all! and LIDAR is just one more tool in the research arsenal. For other noobs like me, give it a try, its an excellent resource. Happy detecting, Andy.
  2. From some research so far: Feel free to add more knowledge, would be appreciated. Factors of items going deeper into earth 1. Worms (LOL) 2. Leaves organic matter build up over time 3. Moles 4. Drainage Is that it?? I know its a noob thing to be obsessed with depth, but i keep wondering how deep those medieval/Roman/or pre-1800 coins/relics are. Thanks.
  3. Hya Nuke. Good to meet you Yeah buddy! I settled with the NDT Ghosts, just got em yesterday evening. I had to buy the very costly "equinox adaptor" at £40.00!!! But it is a quality adaptor, screws into the WM-O8 and of course the ghosts has a lovely clip in socket. They are very nice. The sound is awesome, simply stunning. I tried em on my laptop last night (without adaptor) and i could hear the mic tones, and background noises like i was sitting in the room. Yesterday i found more coinage than i ever have in a day, whether that was luck, or better tones?? Im inclined to think it was better tones. I take it you had to buy the adaptor too then? I assume you use em with the nox? Andy.
  4. Hi Nightforce, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302778200124 Hope he can get you one!
  5. The Nox is bringing much needed happiness to the world ? Nice finds Aurum. Andy.
  6. Howdy GB, Now that is interesting! My life has been full of synchronicities and coincidents, almost as if there is a puppet master ? I wont get into that one .... heheheee!! But that is really cool GB! Do you know at first, i thought it was a roman with that big fat head on it, then i realised, oh nope ... its just fat George. Probably my nicest coin to date that one. But yeah ... defo a very small world ? Hi Happa, good to meet ya buddy, thanks for your kind words, I got it off ebay seller, it was his last one, but if you look around online under molle belts, there are a few options. I like it cus you can add more pouches as you need them. I use one for a water pouch - which i have a tube going straight to my pie hole so i can detect and slurp at the same time. Hhehehe. I have one for my trowel, one for the finds, profind attaches easily, and thats about it really, i would carry a nice colt peacemaker too, but over here we have ninnies in control ? Cheers matey! LOL ... Now youve done it, you'll never get rid of me now ? Cheers Steve, you've got a great friendly forum here, nice to be part of it. thanks. Cheers Matt! Good to meet you bud, Indeed, this machine is bloody AWESOME. Wishing you the very best finds too!!
  7. That is uncanny, this is what Joan Allen sell, for around 40.00 pounds. I only just mentioned this on another thread, and low and behold, i just seen this, LOL. Joan Allen dont have it on their website, but they do have them in stock. Spoke to them today ? EDIT: Joan Allen UK now have them on their website.
  8. Appreciate that info Steve, thank you. Yeah this relates to the compatibility issue of the 3.5mm headphone jack as well I believe. I wish minelab would standardise their ports, because it seems i now have to buy an adaptor for £40.00 from (Joan Allen) if i wish to use with grey Ghosts. I am going to look at these sun rays now, cheers Steve! Andy.
  9. Apologies if im posting a lot, but im really into this hobby. My finds arent stunning by any means, but it does show that this machine is very capable! Its only a matter of time before the treasure is found, hehehehehe. Cheers Peeps! Edit: You may think this is a lot of finds for the amount of time ive been hitting it, but kindly take note, i was informed one location was the spot of an old wishing well. LOL. Andy
  10. Hello there Foreverteachable, Good to meet ya, Some nice finds there matey, I always love the silver ? You raise a good point about the sensitivity on the nox. I was wondering whether lower sens has a negative effect on depth. I try and run it as high as possible, but never seem to get past 20 or 21 without naughty behaviour from her. Anyways, nice pictures, nice finds and long may it continue. Andy.
  11. Hi fellow detectorists, I used the WM-08 for the first time yesterday. Before this i was using 2 methods, the Bluetooth supplied e phones (Very slow lag) and then the wired setup directly into the nox. Trouble was with the wired, i kept getting tangled up, and ripping the phones from my noggin! The WM-08 setup was great, fast, comfortable and defo thew way to go!! And so im looking at getting some new "high quality" and "high performance" Head phones. In the running so far are: Grey Ghost NDT Black Widows And this one intrigued me .... Clear sound Sovereign (sold at detecknicks) Although it makes me wonder, as the company that makes them seemingly based in the netherlands, however another company "C-Scope" seem to sell the same phones, but with their own brand?? Weird, perhaps generic?? If so... where are they made?? China??? HELP!!! lol Bose Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, i did do a search, but couldnt see too much about this. Thanks guys n gals!! Andy.
  12. I was baffled by the waiting lists over the last few months in the UK. A certain UK vendor had them coming in every week, and had them sitting on the shelf most weeks, whilst people were still on waiting lists. No harm in saying it was "Spin a disk metal detectors". I have no affiliation with them, nor do i wish to advertise for them, but in saying that Carl at the store was very helpful, so i can recommend. Dont know if ive broken a forum rule mentioning this, but if so apologies. So i spoke with detecknicks last week, James i think it was, and he said the 6 inch coils would be arriving anytime now, and the 12x15 inch some time around September/October. But yeah it seems that cus people paid upfront, they were indeed locked into the sale to some degree, and perhaps couldn't be bothered with the hassle of cancellation. I got some good advice early on from a great chap - Craig from "Relic hunter wales" off Youtube, whereby he advised this noob (ME) not to pay upfront if i could help it. Good advice Craig! He also mentioned 10% off at detecknicks, when mentioning his Youtube channel, so its all gravy! Anyways I hope everyone pretty much has their machines now, just got to go find the treasure now, Oh and them darn coils!! Common Minelab, pull ye finger out ? Andy.
  13. Hi Buick, Have you used one of a friends, or do you own one? The multi-frequency is the thing i love! Besides, this hole digging is getting me back into some kind of shape ? Andy.
  14. Hi fellow detectorists, Well i got back from my permission about an hour ago. Always feel good after exercise, but feel even better after detecting ? Anyways it was a crazy day, bleeps and chirps on almost every sweep. I kind of got a tad despondent after digging about 10+ holes and finding lead, wire, bolts, door handles, an old ladys lighter etc. They all seemed to reside in the 10-17 VDI range in Field 2. As i carried on, the vdi's kept matching the previous trash, and that made for the despondency. I found myself skipping good signals in that vdi range, and now back at home im kicking myself for not digging them. Especially when on one 16 (i think) i dug up a nice french centime 1969. Not a great dig, but nice to see a shiny coin. So my query is, should we really dig them all, because today i would of tore up the whole lawn with about 100 + holes. Its a dilemma, but im still sat here reminiscing of my digs. Oh and on advice from Steve, im going to ask this with the Brits in mind: What ground balance method do you chaps/chapess's use in the UK on fields please? Auto, manual or ground track? God i love this hobby. All the best peeps! Andy.
  15. Howdy Steve, Many thanks, you have really given me a wake up call and pointed things out that i didnt consider. Its particularly interesting what you said about the nature of elliptical coils. In essence, it is a 12 inch coil with more ground coverage ? . So in short ,this new larger coil will give me a very small increase in depth, but the main thing is that it will cover more ground. Got it! In reevaluating these coils, i may get both eventually. The big one for the large fields in the UK , and the small for around the Manor house's little steps and crevices. Lol ... Why i didnt consider the larger coil to just be comparable to a 12 inch coil vs the stock 11 inch (in terms of depth capability) has got me scratching my own noggin ? I think it was the pictures of the size of the thing and as you say, the marketing that says 12 x 15, with the number > (15) (EDIT: Sorry 15) ... residing deep in my psyche !! Steve on another note if i may, which i will keep brief as i dont want to take too much of your time up. Its this: What method would you suggest for ground balance in the UK on fields. When ive manually adjusted, ive had numbers crazy high, like 55, 60 70. Is ground tracking a good option? or a manual balance say every 20 mins or so ? Thanking you kindly Steve, Andy.
  16. Hi Steve, good to talk with you, long time reader. May i ask, what depth difference do you think the larger coil will provide? and im interested in your comment regarding you not wanting the larger coil for depth? Its my own logical fallacy perhaps that is motivating my question, because in my noob mind, im thinking depth - or lack of, is the reason for less roman finds. Thanks in advance.
  17. Thanks Dan. If i may, i had another question on my mind. With the Nox what do you prefer in regards to ground balance method? Ive read that for most detecting a 0 is ideal. However on 90% of ground i have hit in the UK so far, has been crazy high, like 54, or 70 ish Then i hear that if i use ground tracking, it slows the machine down some. What do you use personally? if you dont mind me asking. Loving this forum, good to meet you Dan. Andy (UK).
  18. Hi Dan, I was wondering, how does the CTX compare with the Nox? You mentioned it covers more ground, how so buddy? Im interested cus it was a toss up between the CTX and the Nox, with me choosing the nox. I am still interested in the CTX you see, cheers!!
  19. Excellent advice, and makes A LOT of sense to what im experiencing. Guys you've been a great help! Thanking you kindly!
  20. Chase, your advice was very helpful and simple for me to understand. I like the idea of using an alternate mode in order to confirm or reject, excellent advice and much appreciated. Even today i was getting loads of one way chirps. Your spot on regarding the modes being like 2 different detectors, and i still dont know which one i prefer, out of them all, although park 2 seems to get me more results at the expense of more chirpy detecting, but field 1 seems a lot quieter, but i seem to get less finds. Ive probably had about 80 hours on the nox now, and im still sometimes baffled as to what its telling me, but each and every time i go out with her, i know how capable the machine is, and thats a nice feeling. Thanks Chase, much appreciated.
  21. Howdy buddy! Hope you had a good Independence day, no worries i had nowt to do with it all I promise ? Yeah I got free reign for as long as i like (or so it seems). Ive began using florescent brick line, as to do long sections methodically. 2 metres wide and about 70 ft long to start, as my sweep is about 2m. So far done 8m by 70m. Some buttons, another defaced coin yesterday. I love finding the silver because it holds up better in the ground. All the bronze is done for, unless its in thick clay. But im still learning about soil types, metallurgy and the like. All the best GB. Andy.
  22. Cheers GB for your kind welcome. Well its a trade off i guess, you guys get the guns, we get more historic sites ? Saying that though, ive seen some great finds from over the pond! I had a dream come true last week. I was given permission to detect at a medieval Hall. It has a medieval church built in 1055 and has a stream, lake and of course the hall itself. 35 acres in total, and i have free reign over everything except the 2 pristine lawns. The guy was lovely, and he and his wife printed me a letter as a guard against fellow occupants. The hall has been converted you see into 250,000 pound apartments. So far, ive found x2 musket balls, x1 silver 1872 coin - 2 defaced roman coins, plus - a roman lead traders weight. Ive perhaps only done 2% of it so far, so im hoping to dig up some more roman coins or god forbid a gold stater coin! If i figure this forum out ill post some pictures of the site and the finds i make. Anyways, im really pleased to be on here now, i love to talk detecting and the wife isnt too interested and the dog just wants his dinner.all the time ? Cheers GB, Cheers everyone!
  23. Thanks you 2. I sometimes run with horse shoe on, others off. I perhaps will stick to one or the other next time. I know that in practice on a silver coin on edge, it will chirp one way only most of the time. I think i will dig pretty much them all, just to get confirmation and feedback. For a site with iron on every sweep, what iron bias would you suggest? Iron bias is the only thing that puzzles me with the nox, even after reading numerous articles etc. Thanks in advance, good to be amongst people who know their stuff.
  24. Hi Peeps, new member here, so hello all. Ok so .... A lot of the time im getting a one way chirp on the nox which shows a good VDI. Is this a coin on edge, is it worth a dig? I seem to get this a lot, so surely they cant all be on edge coins. Another weird one is that i get a moderate signal, but then when i really brush the coil against the grass, (to decrease depth of target) it then shows a good vdi. Is this falsing or am i getting nearer to the target? Again ... Seems to happen a lot. Thanks. Andy.
  25. Ive frequented this forum many times, especially to view fellow lovers of the foxy-noxy dribble over their new machine. Im addicted to detecting now, thanks to the many great finds ive had in only 5 weeks use. My list to date: 3 silver coins (1872 Brit/1828 and a shilling) 8 musket balls 18 1900 and 1800 pennies I ring (medieval i think) A bronze animal figure oh and lots of foil, ring pulls and other junk, which has helped me suss out the wheat from the trash via the VDI numbers. My fave setting so far is: Park 2 - Discrimination 1 - Recovery 4 - sensitivity 18-20 Hope to bounce some ideas around and learn from you all. Especially the king of the Nox and tester - (Steve H) LOL. CHEERS ALL. Andy (UK)
