  1. Howdy Steve, Many thanks, you have really given me a wake up call and pointed things out that i didnt consider. Its particularly interesting what you said about the nature of elliptical coils. In essence, it is a 12 inch coil with more ground coverage ? . So in short ,this new larger coil will give me a very small increase in depth, but the main thing is that it will cover more ground. Got it! In reevaluating these coils, i may get both eventually. The big one for the large fields in the UK , and the small for around the Manor house's little steps and crevices. Lol ... Why i didnt consider the larger coil to just be comparable to a 12 inch coil vs the stock 11 inch (in terms of depth capability) has got me scratching my own noggin ? I think it was the pictures of the size of the thing and as you say, the marketing that says 12 x 15, with the number > (15) (EDIT: Sorry 15) ... residing deep in my psyche !! Steve on another note if i may, which i will keep brief as i dont want to take too much of your time up. Its this: What method would you suggest for ground balance in the UK on fields. When ive manually adjusted, ive had numbers crazy high, like 55, 60 70. Is ground tracking a good option? or a manual balance say every 20 mins or so ? Thanking you kindly Steve, Andy.
  2. Hi Steve, good to talk with you, long time reader. May i ask, what depth difference do you think the larger coil will provide? and im interested in your comment regarding you not wanting the larger coil for depth? Its my own logical fallacy perhaps that is motivating my question, because in my noob mind, im thinking depth - or lack of, is the reason for less roman finds. Thanks in advance.
  3. Thanks Dan. If i may, i had another question on my mind. With the Nox what do you prefer in regards to ground balance method? Ive read that for most detecting a 0 is ideal. However on 90% of ground i have hit in the UK so far, has been crazy high, like 54, or 70 ish Then i hear that if i use ground tracking, it slows the machine down some. What do you use personally? if you dont mind me asking. Loving this forum, good to meet you Dan. Andy (UK).
  4. Hi Dan, I was wondering, how does the CTX compare with the Nox? You mentioned it covers more ground, how so buddy? Im interested cus it was a toss up between the CTX and the Nox, with me choosing the nox. I am still interested in the CTX you see, cheers!!
  5. Excellent advice, and makes A LOT of sense to what im experiencing. Guys you've been a great help! Thanking you kindly!
  6. Chase, your advice was very helpful and simple for me to understand. I like the idea of using an alternate mode in order to confirm or reject, excellent advice and much appreciated. Even today i was getting loads of one way chirps. Your spot on regarding the modes being like 2 different detectors, and i still dont know which one i prefer, out of them all, although park 2 seems to get me more results at the expense of more chirpy detecting, but field 1 seems a lot quieter, but i seem to get less finds. Ive probably had about 80 hours on the nox now, and im still sometimes baffled as to what its telling me, but each and every time i go out with her, i know how capable the machine is, and thats a nice feeling. Thanks Chase, much appreciated.
  7. Howdy buddy! Hope you had a good Independence day, no worries i had nowt to do with it all I promise ? Yeah I got free reign for as long as i like (or so it seems). Ive began using florescent brick line, as to do long sections methodically. 2 metres wide and about 70 ft long to start, as my sweep is about 2m. So far done 8m by 70m. Some buttons, another defaced coin yesterday. I love finding the silver because it holds up better in the ground. All the bronze is done for, unless its in thick clay. But im still learning about soil types, metallurgy and the like. All the best GB. Andy.
  8. Cheers GB for your kind welcome. Well its a trade off i guess, you guys get the guns, we get more historic sites ? Saying that though, ive seen some great finds from over the pond! I had a dream come true last week. I was given permission to detect at a medieval Hall. It has a medieval church built in 1055 and has a stream, lake and of course the hall itself. 35 acres in total, and i have free reign over everything except the 2 pristine lawns. The guy was lovely, and he and his wife printed me a letter as a guard against fellow occupants. The hall has been converted you see into 250,000 pound apartments. So far, ive found x2 musket balls, x1 silver 1872 coin - 2 defaced roman coins, plus - a roman lead traders weight. Ive perhaps only done 2% of it so far, so im hoping to dig up some more roman coins or god forbid a gold stater coin! If i figure this forum out ill post some pictures of the site and the finds i make. Anyways, im really pleased to be on here now, i love to talk detecting and the wife isnt too interested and the dog just wants his dinner.all the time ? Cheers GB, Cheers everyone!
  9. Thanks you 2. I sometimes run with horse shoe on, others off. I perhaps will stick to one or the other next time. I know that in practice on a silver coin on edge, it will chirp one way only most of the time. I think i will dig pretty much them all, just to get confirmation and feedback. For a site with iron on every sweep, what iron bias would you suggest? Iron bias is the only thing that puzzles me with the nox, even after reading numerous articles etc. Thanks in advance, good to be amongst people who know their stuff.
  10. Hi Peeps, new member here, so hello all. Ok so .... A lot of the time im getting a one way chirp on the nox which shows a good VDI. Is this a coin on edge, is it worth a dig? I seem to get this a lot, so surely they cant all be on edge coins. Another weird one is that i get a moderate signal, but then when i really brush the coil against the grass, (to decrease depth of target) it then shows a good vdi. Is this falsing or am i getting nearer to the target? Again ... Seems to happen a lot. Thanks. Andy.
  11. Ive frequented this forum many times, especially to view fellow lovers of the foxy-noxy dribble over their new machine. Im addicted to detecting now, thanks to the many great finds ive had in only 5 weeks use. My list to date: 3 silver coins (1872 Brit/1828 and a shilling) 8 musket balls 18 1900 and 1800 pennies I ring (medieval i think) A bronze animal figure oh and lots of foil, ring pulls and other junk, which has helped me suss out the wheat from the trash via the VDI numbers. My fave setting so far is: Park 2 - Discrimination 1 - Recovery 4 - sensitivity 18-20 Hope to bounce some ideas around and learn from you all. Especially the king of the Nox and tester - (Steve H) LOL. CHEERS ALL. Andy (UK)
