Minelab Fy23 Investor Presentation For 2024 - No GPZ 8000?
Skookum replied to phrunt's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
That's an impressive order. If it lives up to the picture you painted, perhaps, it could be a machine to end the need for multiple. Although, if it is to be, it might cost more than multiple. I find it intriguing that if the future of ZVT is so good that it has not been produced in cheaper versions to appeal to the masses. Could a delay mean it’s a little harder to improve upon than expected? -
Minelab Fy23 Investor Presentation For 2024 - No GPZ 8000?
Skookum replied to phrunt's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Very prescient, as it seems to be happening now. After having had both the GPZ and the 6000, it would be really hard to go back to any kind of heavier machine. The 7000 is cumbersome and unpleasant anywhere but in open spaces and the harness is a pain. What are chances that a replacement isn’t heavier than the 6000? Even if not, the price is assured to be astronomical and dissuasive for us novices. Sure would love to have a MF Gold Monster or to see what an updated SDC with a faster processor could do. -
This is an interesting idea I’d like to try!

I, for one, had been patiently waiting all this time for the smallest. Now, I’m not sure what to do other than examine the other current offerings. But, I’ve really wanted something on the opposite end of the 6000’s spectrum.

Congratulations! Your hard work paid off. A beautiful lump. That will be a story you always remember. -
I see less reason to move on from my Equinox 800 until the smallest coils materialize and are proven to be adequate for the Manticore. Many of us share the same thought. That is simply manufacturing smaller coils (preferably manufacturer brand) will lead to the larger purchase. It seems like someone at some level in the corporation is crazy-making about profit margins on coils and misunderstands the bigger picture of what triggers many detector sales—for a multi-use machine! 🤑>🏭>📦🧐>🫷🤪

While running my hands along a coil cable, I noticed a pin-sized thorn had pierced the cable, broken off, and embedded itself inside. Tweezers were of no use as the splinter was too deep and brittle. It got me a wondering if any one has any experience regarding the potential impact of such an injury to the coil cable and it’s insulation. Any thoughts?

Gold Monster Vs 24K Vs Gold Bug 2 Or...........

Interesting. How do you find out such things? I agree, it doesn’t spin it any better that it was a simply a component supply issue. -
Minelab Equinox 900 Or Manticore For Prospecting
Skookum replied to Gerry in Idaho's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
That's interesting and good to hear. I'll need to take my 800 out prospecting, again, because it seems like I recall the 6" being more bump sensitive than the 11". That may also be related to the differences between relic and gold modes, but I'm not sure. Too bad there isn't a small coil for comparison on the Manticore, yet. -
Minelab Equinox 900 Or Manticore For Prospecting

Has anyone noticed any difference in knock sensitivity between the Equinox series and the Manticore? -
Minelab Manticore Vs Equinox 800/900 For Gold Nuggets
Skookum replied to Gerry in Idaho's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
This thread speaks to some of the reasons I have not yet moved from the Equinox 800 to the Manticore. I recognize it’s partly emotional because I don't typically use the 800 for prospecting. One reason is because it's more knock sensitive than the Gold Monster. Even with more settings on the Equinox, the GM gets more prospecting VLF use because it handles scrubbing around much better. Aside from that, there are other things that pose hurdles to a new machine. It's hard to let go of all the time spent in familiarizing oneself with the older machine. Then there are investments: accessories, coils, and stems for each coil. Because these particular machines have positioned themselves as do-it-all detectors, unless there is an improvement for prospecting, as well as relic-ing, or feedback showing the new machine is at least on par in the goldfield (including quality coil options), it's an uncomfortable purchase. It will be interesting to see what coils Minelab can fruitfully provide and see what users' experience reveals. It's sure felt like a slow roll out. -
Gold Monster Vs 24K Vs Gold Bug 2 Or...........

I have to agree. When seeing the new version, my thought was: “That’s a bit insulting to us target customers.” It’s almost as if they were targeting the Radio Shack do-it-yourself crowd from 40 years ago. “Gee whiz—its got an LCD!” An unfortunate, out of touch upgrade for the world of iPhone users. Slim, functional, and powerful are expected in order to justify the replacement. -
I loved the Geiger counter noises.

I just came across this short film that should be shared. Painfully ridiculous, but worth a chuckle.

The hidden information in this diagram shows that the SDC finds smaller gold than GM and the GPZ finds everything the others find with the exception of the smallest picker found by the SDC. 🤔

I agree. On mine, the cracks were so faint they looked like scratches. Not until I removed the stem and pinched the ears could I see daylight coming through the line. It was definitely not something that would be picked up without being said. I also asked them the check my battery due to some behavior I have mentioned before where a freshly charged battery shows 2 out of 3 bars after a few minutes. It will be very interesting to listen for EMI improvements and repost findings here. You all have much faster ship times. Mine is 6 days by ground. I considered expedited, but the prices were too much.

My baby just went in the mail, today. I sent the upper shaft, battery, and coil. The coil had developed horizontal cracks in the ears, which is why it went, too. The repair letter said that they like to test it with the battery. UPS Ground, including the box and packing: $60. UPS Ground, including the box, packing, and insurance: $230. I agonized a bit over the price, but decided that I would really regret buying a new detector instead of having bought insurance. It probably would’ve been cheaper and faster through USPS, but UPS does all the work.

After much more use, I've continued to notice that a freshly charged battery in the GPX 6000 will shortly display 2 bars instead of 3. However, yesterday, I noticed that a factory reset restored the battery meter to 3 bars for the rest of the morning. Perhaps this can help anyone else noticing this behavior. Has anyone else noticed this?

Coiltek Goldhawk Is Impressive On My Gpx-6000
Skookum replied to Gerry in Idaho's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Hear, hear. The 6000 deserves a smaller, more manageable, DD in the line up. It’s salt and EMI cancel modes are largely ignored with the unwieldy 14”. -
6000 Vs 7000: Hot Rocks And Small Gold
Skookum replied to Gold Catcher's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
What if the comparison was between the GPX 17” and the GPZ 14” on the same hot rocks? Do you think there would be any significant difference in the comparison? -
Now that its been out for awhile, does anyone have any other observations on what are their preferred applications for the 17"? How does it perform in patch hunting in areas infested with hot rocks? Does the size render it less sensitive due to averaging of a larger surface area? Or, is it bogged down due to a having wider footprint?

Here is a question for people who have had years of experience with using, selling, or engineering detectors. Has anyone ever heard if strong magnetic fields, say from a rare earth magnet on a pick head, bumping into contact with the control box have any potential for altering a detector’s performance? I didn’t think of this until I was scratching my head trying to figure out why I kept hearing lightning spikes on an otherwise on a crystal clear day. 😅
