  1. Nice play by play and reveal Compass! your doing great...lakes are where its at just don't tell anyone lol. FG makes some nice rings... have one in my collection from a park hunt a few years ago. I think I'll call them fools gold from now on...  because any fool that goes out and digs thousands of pull tabs deserves a nice piece of gold once in a while 🙂

Why oh why oh why does any md'rs go to blighted junky parks (where the ratios are punishing) looking for gold rings

Tom have you not heard of the Aluminum Abatement Collective Program? We all must do our share to help clean the environment...It's not always about the gold 🙂

  3. Nice work Compass as usual. Your one of the top Jewelry hunters I've seen on the sites. What you are doing works so don't change a thing.

I've posted this picture before. I was saving pull tabs for a short time but that got old quick. I could not tell you how many there are in the photo nor could I tell you how many hunts or how many gold rings I found during that short time. I have a hard time passing up mid and low conductors that sound good. Many days with nothing but junk to show for my efforts... but it can be rewarding as you know. Nice ring !

Sorry, hope ya understand I was preaching to the new folks more than you. 😅

Small town anecdote, I'm waiting for the local Superintendent to get ousted for malfeasance, then I can hunt the schools 😀

You should be allowed to hunt public schools...Most of them over here are now fenced in...it's getting tougher and tougher this hobby of ours...There is one school I've been wanting to hit one of my clients is a teacher over there and said go ahead but I'm a little reluctant to as it's fenced in for the most part.  I'm waiting for a little rain so I can get started with the turf hunting again..its great to see you get out and finding stuff...

  5. Gotcha....My policy is not to bother asking if it's public property. Private property is a different thing all together. This has been talked about ad nauseam over here on west coast. Too many people with uniforms that don't know the rules and too many idiots making laws that cant be enforced. The Camp Ground I was referring to was private property as I recall which is why I asked them to begin...

Good to know someone, but it's best to go right to the top. 🤔 All campgrounds have a General Manager, some an assistant. I've been in a situation where The AGM gave me permission, and the GM accosted me later. It worked out ok, but if you have permission from the King, no one can touch you. 👑

We stayed at a old camp ground a few years ago. when I spoke to the lady host she said it was ok to detect...early next morning I was out in the ball field and the male host comes walking up and tells me I'm not allowed to detect....when I told him "Thats not what your wife told me" he changed his tune...350 your right the king rules..

By far, the quietest coil is the NF 12x7 mono. I hope that the square-block wound mono design that NF use, will be replicated in their 16x10 and 8.5x6 monos as well. Quiet means stable and stable means performance improvement. At the moment, the Coiltek 10x5 mono is the most sensitive coil out there...by a mile.

Agree 100 % after using  the 12x7 and the 10x5 on a patch recently I've found the 10x5 to hit smaller gold better then the 12x7. I was actually surprised how many pieces on heavily worked ground the 12x7 had missed. The 12x7 is great on small gold but the 10x5 is better. I have not put the stock minelab coil on my machine since taking it off but i should give it another chance next time out.

  8. Everyone has been very nice and thoughtful in their responses...and there have been lots of good suggestions. The beauty of the hobby is that we get to choose where we want to hunt...I recently watched a guy we all know remove about 10 pounds of nails out of a 4x4 foot area and still did not get them all out. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say... The small coil and moving slowly will be your best bet. Use your boot to scrap the ground and move the shallower stuff. Slowly and over time you will achieve success...when you get sick of all the trash then go to a beach where you can take in a big breath of that ocean mist and clear your head. That is if you are in reach of one 🙂

Last week was detecting an area which has been good in the past.  I got a good signal and was digging it up, No warning got "HIT" by a Yellow Jacket, Hit because it's like getting HIT!  I moved darn fast for 69 years old.  Second time in a few years that's happened, you have no warning because they seem to come out of no where.  I "Wonder" what that signal was?  Well will wait till after the first frost and go finish that recovery up.

Had a wasp hit me on the side of the face a few weeks ago opening a pipe gate...One of the few time I've been hit but not stung...bad aim or a warning shot? I'll never know but I located where they were coming from and told the owner.

Couple weeks ago I was up in the High Sierras detecting when I decided to take a break for lunch so I set my detector down..When I went to pick it up I noticed there were about 5 bumble bees sucking the sweat off my arm band...I analyzed the situation briefly and decided to just give the arm cuff a wack with my hat and maybe kill a couple (I had been getting buzzed by them for hours and about had it with all the bees) ...that was a mistake and you should have heard by buddy laughing as I was swinging the hat around my head trying to fend off the swarming bees that I only managed to piss off 🙂

  10. Just got off work a couple hours ago..was doing dentals at a high end well to do horse barn here in the east bay Mt diablo foot hills..a rattle snake was found in one of the feeder bags in one of the horse stalls across from where I was standing...the ladies were a little bit concerned but soon forgot about it. Just keep your eyes open. Grizzles that a whole different deal.

  11. Nice work Compass. I love the Excalibur. I have one of the last that was made with the 8" coil and I bought it for trashy beach hunting (fresh water sites) its done well for me over the years ...It's nice and simple to operate and you don't have to worry too much if its gonna leak...You're not going to find many gold chains with it but its great for rings... goes to show you don't need the latest/fastest technology to go out and find gold...it's the hunter that finds the gold.

  12. I've never bought them...I can see on some of my pinpointers where I have worn the plastic a lot but not down to where it ruins the pinpointer...maybe they become more sensitive as your wear down the plastic lol...that being said I usually break my pinpointers due to  other bad habits  rather then the tip going out...I'm constantly throwing them off to the side once the target has been located.

Thanks strick, that's what I was wanting to know.

Yea and that machine has the stability as well...Just lacking in the speed department. Just to be clear my comments on the Deus 2 are purely from a relic hunting point of view so take them with a grain of salt...I like my Minelabs for jewelry hunting... Another thing to consider is that you like using larger coils so you might want to check out how the deus 2 feels with the larger coils before you buy....you may not like the balance. But then there are the after market shafts with counter weights you could buy if you want to start going down that road..

  14. Stability it get a A plus

Accuracy I'd give it a B it tends to lump things together esp when you get above 70 TID...Silver coins are easy as they have been with most well built metal detectors...you already have the most accurate TID machine...you know what I'm talking about.... but i would not discourage you from getting a deus 2 as they are a fun machine to use and fast
