  1. Good explanations, Jeff, Ted and Steve. I really appreciate the time you guys took to answer and write. I guess beyond knowing the machine, it is knowing your surroundings I guess I have gotten in the mindset of considering a coin hunt as a relic hunt also. I have found old Military buttons and ferrous items while shooting for coins and jewelry, So I try not to miss those opportunities if I can . Most of our beaches are salt and I mostly use the Beach modes as dictated. I agree that noise cancel and ground balance are real important, and I agree with Ted that 50 tones in my world can be overwhelming. I do like the 5. Admitedly, I think I am looking for the machine to be everything all of the time, when I should be focused more into less generalized hunting. As far as fine tuning perhaps I should be more cognizant of the modes that I choose as you shared Steve. I guess it goes back to knowing your machine. To recant what I said in my opening, the technical info and caliber of operators on this forum are second to none. Prop
  2. Ok, have recently read an article in another forum about fine tuning the equinox in the field. It was basically listening while in different recovery and iron bias settings to hear the best sound and using that setting. Many times , if you go on site, you end up changing between modes and then have to retune again, and that can be intense . I believe that if you sense what your detector is telling you, and then you can make adjustments on the fly. I am wondering if you do the same, and utilize one particular program as a basis to work with? With all of the horsepower and knowledge on this forum, what land and beach program do you use as a good basis for testing your settings. The second subpart to the question is do you use a program that utilizes 50 tones or 5 and do you switch between the two? I have read and watched over the years many different thoughts ( just like a you tube cure), however I find this forum is the one that addresses issues in a more technical and believable way. Look forward to your answers. PROP
  3. I will give those suggestions a try. I guess I haven’t as much experience wth rings on the move. The person says he usually puts an elastic in front of the ring but this was more spontaneous, An accident waiting to happen. I have also reloaded my v2 update in case that might be an issue. I will let everyone know if things work!
  4. I use the Equinox mostly for Beach and Land @ coins and Relics, but have decided to possibly hunt some Meteorite areas. My wife's family have been notable in the field of minerals with a large collection being displayed at the Maine Mineral Museum in Bethel. https://mainemineralmuseum.org/ The Museum has a large room of meteorites from around the world. As this has been of interest, I was wondering as to how well the Equinox 800 would be as a detector and what type settings I would use? Prop
  5. Update on the search today. No luck! I detected around a large perimeter of the lawn where subject was standing. Nothing but some foil and in -ground hits. This was on the lawn part! Went out from the edge of the lawn into the brush wooded area ( covered with leaves) and detected in grids, between trees and small saplings. Extremely void of targets. I threw a coin down to make sure detector was still functioning. To Mark's statement , yes the lawn did cover the area where subject was standing, I agree it could have fallen off but I am confident that was covered well. If it went beyond the tree, which I believe the boughs would have slowed or stopped it, it would have landed in the leave covering. I searched, as best as I could, about 50ft beyond tree and same to both sides. To your point GB_ . Even something with that density could have landed up in the boughs. Ironically, his wife, climbed up about 25ft to see if she could see anything. The biggest problem with shooting this site were trying to get under the small trees, and small stubble which hung up he coil. I did suggest that he call if he remembered any more . He is pretty adamant that he felt the ring leave his finger. I wish I had taken a photo to attach> Still Looking for Ticks!!!
  6. Thanks Dew, This is a relatively quiet site. I run the sensitivity at 19. The rel hard part will be the brush. All I have is the 11 inch coil, and due to the small stumps and low hanging boughs, makes it hard to swing.. I don’t believe the ring traveled real far because of weight, going to try to recreate throw today.
  7. Well, I am back from hibernation, and received a call to recover a lost Palladium ring. The person was tossing a small ball with two hands up into a tree. He felt the ring come off. I went and searched the lawn in front of the tree for a fairly large area, then behind the tree, which is scrub brush and leaves..Real tough swinging a detector in that. Do any of the members have an idea as to what the VDI should be. I saw one post say 12 and 13, but others guessed it would be in the lower gold region. I am using the EQ800, all metal mode , V2 update. I would think that this should give a good signal as the loss was two days ago. I am wondering ig the ring, being a light metal may have landed in the branches as it is similar to spruce boughs. I am going back tomorrow, and look for ideas and known VDI's from others. PROP
  8. Andy; Started reading the book and opened my eyes to some new tactics. Well done! Prop
  9. Skate , awesome information and insight. It does shed light on some of the questions. New Hampshire only has a few miles of beach where bathers are prevalent and they are well picked. There are a little less known beaches that would tend to have bathers, relics and town laws. The state beaches are picked well but are replenished by visitors from surrounding states and tourists. southern Maine beaches are equally attractive. The beach that I showed photos of , is as one writer said, worth checking the history. This is all good info ,not only for me but others on the forum.. Thanks
  10. Hi all, Just got back to the forum makes good sense. I do have a book on the river basin Many ships did come and go due to shipyards and brick yards. Thanks for the info and very thought provoking. Your right Mitchel, different beaches here
  11. Thanks Sting Ray. I am thinking that most of the items on this side of the beach would be debris from old vessels. The beach use to be covered in thick sea weed and stinks. So few bathers here. On the other side of the jetty it’s more a sunning and bathing area. The opportunity was there after the storm. I am curious what the striating in the sand tell me. Not sure if it was the rough surf, or wind? But they are all running the same like little dunes.
  12. Hit a small local beach this morning around low tide. Had heavy thunder storms and decided to see what might have been deposited. Using an Equinox800. This side of the beach typically for the last year has been encumbered by seaweed. So not many bathers. But it being NE, I figured maybe something had been made detectable. All I found were a couple of rusted metal spots, which funny, did not sound like iron with no discrimination. In the pools, using Beach 2 had several targets that showed 12-11. but couldn't recover Also showed with handpointer. Weird day! For those that have had more experience beach hunting, I noticed that the beach a striations in the sand and a few pools of water which I attempted. Sand was some what firm, not black . I will try to attach a couple of photos to get your opinions I usually have been a ground type detectorist and started beach hunting last year. Not good yet at reading the beach
  13. Thanks , all points pondered, I can agree that there are a number of factors that would change tones including machine settings and operator perception.....guilty......! I do plan to try working an old pond at a scout camp that is loaded with trash and....tics. On the six inch, I am afraid that I will feel like Chase. Use to have one on a Garrett and didn’t,use much. Prop PS Got Andy’s new manual and looking for some time to go through that.
  14. That is so true. Being from the older Garrett and Explorer crowds you are on point with decent tones. Ironically this gets you thinking about target shapes as well as trash shapes. For myself another learning phase. What did they say " It used to be easy" I'm used to new beginnings. I read and saved Daves article, it does open the eyes. Quick question, have you acquired the 6" coil? and how would that fair at beach? Prop
  15. I guess , after reading part or Clyde’s book and what Chase said make sense,@ I need to be more astute at looking at sizes, and if the location is more suitable for good targets as opposed to a locacation that is loaded with shell casings. I did get Andy’s book yesterday and am tempted to dig into that. I can only read so much of Clyde’s book before my head spins and eyeballs come out. The larger font in Andy’s book looks to be more amenable to adding eyeballs. Prop
  16. Hi Guy's I see where your coming at Chase I would agree with that, and there are some good clips out there (Gigmaster and others). However due to the videos, the trash hits are left out. One of the things that I have discovered is totally deteriorated metal buried in the sand that throws me for a loop. I have just ( in the last year) been trying to learn beach hunting. Spent many years in the pasture or parks. That is why we rely on you seasoned vets. Just seems though I am missing something and waiting for the magic moment. Prop
  17. I mentioned this last year and will re address the subject. Has anyone compiled information of real signature so as one can listen ti clipping and signatures that a re funky in the different tone modes. Although I have been a detectorist for years, many of the new detectors sounds tell more of a story than some are used to. I am wondering if anyone has such a compilation. It seems many love to post their finds on you tube but forget that the sound is just as important. But they keep the headsets on which does not help the cause.. We are used in most cases to what some coins and jewelty sound like, but a clipped ring id different. Perhaps some one might know of such a tool. As always thanks for helping. PROP
  18. Well the Northeast has for the most part been blistering cold. Pretty much made me decide to follow new pursuits during the winter, as well as hanging up the NOX. Didn't give much thought until now about keeping battery for the Nox, headset and adaptor. Was kind of thinking every two or three months until spring. Do you people (gender Neutral) have any different thoughts on this? PROP
  19. Hi TN Sharpshooter. I ended up repairing it and sold it. Taped housing with filament tape and tested. Aside from the tape, unit worked fine. Just had to be real careful of the pins on circuit board. Sorry, just got this Snow has invaded the NorthEast
  20. Steve not being familiar with the SE, that part looks pretty close! That may open doors Thanks
  21. Well , I was using explorer xs to work in the test garden and noticed half the screen went out. Discovered that a couple of the plastic bosses for the screws in the control head had broken, allowing the pc board to separate. On last ditch effort to repair would be to replace plastic control housing if cost effective. So looking to purchase a front half for the control housing.. This is the plastic that the keypad attaches too. I would consider a parted machine if not cost prohibitive. I am kind of attached to the xs , and was trying to keep as a backup, but I think it is P......d because the nox is the new kid. Prop
  22. Thanks D. That is kind of what I am struggling with. The XS still works and I can get along with the Alky. Now that I am getting more use to the nox I should make a comparison especially since the upgrade. We should be getting field data in soon. Thanks, The nox makes me appreciate the weight also. Jim
  23. As I now have the EQ800 and also an Explorer XS and Garrett GTI 1500, should I consider selling the latter detectors and replacing with something else. Trying to simplify things but would like to have a back up to the Equinox. the battery on the XS is shot but I use with the alkaline pack and the Garrett is only alky's I would be willing to consider something less all around and more coins and relics than the EQ. I would be interested in hearing some thoughts A DD coil would be preferable as I am getting use to the EQ11. Jim
  24. Thanks gentlemen!, as jack says senior moments YES. I like the idea about photographing. I think I am still in the stages of exp[oring what this baby can and cannot do so it has not become second nature, I can see where noise and ground balance are something of a giving, and all the others can be done on the fly, after I get a real handle of how the machine needs to be adjusted. I guess I tend not to make adjustments to tones and breaks, as I am fearful of losing them by writing over them, however, that being said I could save that to the user profile and also also keep those settings on a 3X5 or phone program if needed. I am still learning this and it makes me realize the things I didn't know on the XS . JIM
  25. Hello all! A question that I have as I get more use to the NOX800. How does everybody store their information? Example being; would be Using Park 2 Or Beach 1 Mode. You have a saved user program already stored and do not want to encroach that information. You wish to make changes in your park 2 mode for whatever reason because of the site. You already have a favorite mode saved here but wish to use the new settings. This is your modified mode. So now you go to another park that may require a difference in Iron Bias or tone, but wish to document the first mode used, before you again make changes ( I am confused just writing this) I see this happening a number of times especially for those testing different settings.. How do you keep track of your settings for reference or in case you have one of those oh-oh moments
