  1. Ya the audio gets better for the most part. These are three things that I took away from the video. -At 23:00 it is interesting to hear him comment on a recovery speed of 1 and sweep speed. I have swung slow, but not Neil Jones slow lol. I'll have to try that some time. -26:30 Is a good part to watch about Iron Bias. The instructor explains how a CTX-3030 will feel like a Iron Bias of 9, and why the Equinox is a brute while running Iron Bias of 0 in Park 2 for example. A Iron Bias of 4 is recommended for new users. -36:45 is a good refresher on Iron Falsing with a description of what types of targets will make this machine and others false.
  2. This is a great tip I am going to try too. I'm a huge sifter fan, but I'll admit I' haven't been dropping the sensitivity as low, for as long of time as I should be with the Equinox, still getting a feel for the machine. This should give me an idea how low I need to go.
  3. Right on man I love that tarnished silver! Is it just me or is that gold ring pretty big? Holy smokes.
  4. Yes it is a blast for sure. Hey at least you are finding rings, the more junkers you finds the more gold you find regardless if the ratio changes from time to time. Things might start to get even more interesting this weekend, they just issued a "weather statement" for tomorrow. (It's kinda like an early warning of some potentially extreme weather) "Strong winds Friday. Strong westerly winds are forecast to develop in association with a frontal passage Friday. Wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h are expected in the afternoon and early evening, with higher winds possible in thunderstorms. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm." Bring it on, I say.
  5. I suppose if it hits silver coins on edge better, its going to hit tabs on edge better too! ?
  6. My tape is still holding up lol. I have a piece of Kevlar on the way to make a new shaft this fall.
  7. I can't tell any difference one way or the other so I will leave the newest one on there.
  8. This past weekend was so hot I couldn't get in the water anywhere. Well technically I could have used the kayak, it is perfect just for these situations to get away from people, but I was feeling lazy. I got done work at about 3:00 today, so I thought I would go get a haircut, then I thought why not bring the detector and head out after. Then I thought, why get a hair cut at all! What is exciting about these finds is that I found them all in reverse pinpoint AKA Gold 2. I tried the Gold 2 a bit on the weekend, but found myself going back to Park2 about 50% of the time as I was comfortable with it, the threshold on Gold 2 was quite bouncy unless I reduced the sens to about 17. Tonight was different, I had confidence, I knew I was going to find some gold. I hit the water with nobody in sight running Gold 2, recovery 6, sens 22. This is like a dream come true, hunting with the all metal/pin point audio of the Excalibur, but with numbers! I actually dug less iron then usual tonight. The reason why is the increased situational awareness with the all-metal audio. I could hover directly over top of targets to get a good number. This is harder to do in Park 2 with or without the horseshoe because it's hard to know where exactly co-located targets are with multitones and the pinpoint button can be tricky in the iron. This gold earring I absolutely attribute to the Gold 2 audio. I wouldn't have dug it/heard it with the Park 2 audio, I checked a few times as I dug, yes I could get a number in Park 2 because I knew where it was, but it was an underwhelming response. Gold 2 absolutely slammed all of the targets you see below, I could barely get a conventional pinpoint on any of them until I started digging. The Gold earring is a solid 1 TID. After that gold earring I settled right in with the bouncy threshold lol. I will run it a bit lower after some bench tests. The Victorian button was the shallowest, the little earring backs were hard to say, maybe 3"-6" max, the gold earring was easily well over a foot deep and this machine just friggen wailed on it. I'm pleased as punch with this machine.
  9. There was supposed to be an announcement, but the guy got stuck in a tree.
  10. The Garret article you are referring to talks about mono's in relation to pulse induction, it says so in your quote. Garret wouldn't call the GoFind a mono, because both coils are in simultaneous operation. The looks don't mean anything. If you took that dual winding mono coil picture you quoted and put it on an IB machine like the GoFind, it would be a concentric.
  11. The GoFind looks like a concentric, or a DD turned 90°. Squarecentric. The support in the middle could be part of the coil. The term mono is usually reserved for Pulse Induction, it's the only modern machine I am aware of that can use one because the TX and RX happen at different times.
  12. I kinda felt he was talking in the context of hunting with the iron bias off. That makes you dig a little more, but miss a little less. He said CTX would be like using a iron bias of 9. Iron bias of 4 is recommended for new users.
  13. I've been looking around at that GPEX site a bit more, (Canadian Gold Prospectors Forum), I'm still feeling a little under whelmed. There is a lot there to sort through, but nothing particularly interesting. Lot's of blathering about MTO maps, barely a thread makes it past 5 posts. I literally just came across a thread on the first page that I read 8 years ago. There are probably a couple of good miners on there, but I'm particularly interested in the metal detector aspect of it. I think I'll wait here for another Canadian coming along. ?
  14. The original lower shaft was cut down to about 6" long, then epoxied that directly to the carbon tube. His carbon tube is about 40" long.
  15. I will keep this thread updated as I make progress. Here is the tube I am going to use. Roll Wrapped Prepreg Kevlar Round Tube ~ 0.75" ID x 48" Please note that the kevlar tube in the link is ever so slightly small on the inside dimension to fit the Equinox lower shaft as is. I am aware of this and plan to deal with it. Don't order this particular tube unless you can sand down the lower shaft a bit. (A bit less then a mm) The carbon fiber tube my Dad used has a thinner wall. The lower shaft fit a little loose, he used a bit of tape the center it, ultimately the epoxy fills the void nice.
  16. Today I had a look at the shaft that my father put together for his 800. I thought it turned out very well, so I thought I would take a few pictures to share here. We looked at a few options but ultimately thought a true one piece shaft was best and easiest. Based on a previous conversation I had with an experienced water hunter on here, we figured it would be alright to run the carbon fiber almost all the way to the coil. The lower fiberglass factory shaft was cut down to about 6" and secured into the inanimate carbon tube with epoxy. This, along with the lack of clamps really reduced the weight. A couple of holes for the armrest and pod completed the project. Looks like he even got the button on the end of the shaft too. I will be doing something similar with mine, although I still think I want to try a kevlar shaft just for fun as it is basically transparent to RF. I'm in the process of finding one with the right diameters tonight. The main thing for me is to get the 0.875" O.D. (~22mm) to fit the pod, i can modify the lower piece if need be, or print a new one. I'll also tilt the handle a little bit towards myself. I love this because it is light and simple.
  17. A lot of people on the east coast are of Irish descent. Wikipedia says that they spoke Irish in Newfoundland up until the early 1900s. I thought that was interesting, but wait a minute, don't the Irish speak English? Online translators appear to think so. I guess it was more of a Gaelic dialect.
  18. Hey that is interesting JustSwell, it would make a good setup for someone to snorkel with. You could also make a coil the shape of a pin-pointer. That would be a bad ass pin-pointer.
  19. At first I was using the PP a quite bit to size objects, actually I still do. I like to hear that quick little response to know it's a coin size object. One thing I've learned from watching a video that another member posted here, is to watch those coins on edge. They will pinpoint wide one way off the side of the coil. Kinda sounds like one big object but if you listen closely its like a double beep that blends together, those are coins straight up and down. I guess a straight up and down coin exposes the most surface area to the coil when its off to the side.
  20. I got out for a bit of a water hunt today. Using Gold 2 in freshwater as a reverse pinpoint essentially works as expected. -The good. I forgot all about peripheral targets until today. Running in the all-metal audio of the Gold 2 mode located me targets off to the side of my swing that I would have otherwise walked past. -The bad. I have to run the sensitivity about 3 clicks lower then I would in Park 2, to help smooth out the threshold. Example 23 in Park 2 but I could only handle 20 max in Gold 2. I'm not sure how much depth I'm giving back if any. It was nice having that threshold back to listen for faints. I usually run the sensitivity just high enough that I can hear the ripples across the top of the sand.
