  1. That's a great looking gear setup! Fantastic idea bringing along some veg oil and relic preservation. I keep a pretty basic setup going because I just hate to walk around with 10lbs of gear weighing me down while I'm swinging the coil. For a belt, I went with my old 5.11 tactical 1.5' trainer belt due to it's thickness and usability. I found this nifty brown leather sheath that was built for a digging tool and pinpointer off of Amazon ( here ) and ( this ) pouch for smaller relics and non-silver coins. Both of those items work well and keep the frequently used items at reach. I also bought a small tactical MOLLE pouch ( this one ) for keeping a few things handy (extra batteries, insect repellent, note pad, place for phone and small flashlight) Last piece of current gear used in an old Maxpedition RollyPoly Folding Dump Pouch ( here ) for all the garbage that I find. I always haul everything that I find out and this pouch does a good job holding all the crud. It's also nice in that it folds up and stays out of the way if it's not needed at the time. Great idea sharing out carry gear ideas! -Bill
  2. The weather is starting to break a little bit here in Indiana as well, it's no fun to go out with it's 95 degrees with around 100% humidity out ? It's in the mid 60's today, but a work day. Good luck !
  3. That's a pretty cool idea! You might be a little careful though with the Cling Wrap, the control box does emit a certain amount of heat and I've noticed with the cloth cover, it's still breathable enough so that the box doesn't get too hot. Not sure how that would work on a really hot day, but maybe it would be fine! -Bill
  4. That's a pretty good savings right there! Thanks for sharing, chief! -Bill
  5. Welcome to the forum! Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures here ? -Bill
  6. I'm down in Bloomington IN, great place to live (even with the student population) and there's old stuff to be found, it's just going to involve some door knocking ?
  7. Great video and proof enough that the update for the Equinox has taken care of one serious issue. Thanks for sharing ! -Bill
  8. I hope it's ok that I'm sparking a fire to an older thread, but I wanted to add my own two-cents to it. Perhaps some of the new Nox users like myself can find new value here as well. Being a somewhat new Nox 800 owner and always wanting to find a way to better preserve the life of my finer electronics, I too started looking at custom covers for the Nox control pad. I bought the same one that a lot of you had and after using for a few weeks, I'm very pleased with it. It's a nice tight fit and provides great access to the charging port, the headphone jack and of course, the coil connector. The materials seem well made and the front plastic cleans up nice after your time detecting and you have some dusty prints on it ? As long as you don't go crazy with it and keep it clean, I can see it lasting a long time and providing a great ectra layer of protection that won't get in the way. Also, I think the glare is minimal. Here's a few pics I snapped. and a link to the vendor who is still selling them. I bet he or she is making a killing on these in the US ? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minelab-Equinox-600-800-Screen-Touchpad-Protector-Cover-USA-Made/123240175564 -Bill
  9. Wow, what a fantastic find! Stunning hammered coin, Gratz, sir ! -Bill P
  10. Little late to the topic, (new user here) but like many others have said, about 85% of my nickels have beep at 13 with 12% or so coming in at 12. I'm sure that soil grade, depth and coin condition will play a part in the end outcome, but those are the sweet spots. My first nickel (in fact, first coin) I dug with my Nox 800 about a month when I got it was at an old home site I hammered relentlessly with my Garrett Ace 400 numerous times. It was about six inches down and was a banging solid 13, no matter which way I turned. Love those 13's ? -Bill
  11. Like many others here, I have had zero issues with the Garrett Pro-Pointer AT (Carrot). Possible things to note is that I always noise cancel the Nox first, and when the pointer comes into play, I ground balance the Pro-Pointer AT before probing. It's sometimes surprising how many folks don't GB the Carrot, but it helps with some probing issues that others have had. Not sure if any of that helps, but my Nox 800 and Garrett Carrot are happy partners ? -Bill
  12. Yeah, I have the Ace 400 as well and know your pain. Not wanting to repeat what the others have said, but keep digging those signals and something good will turn up. That being said, I don't think I've ever pulled anything of any real value out of the ground that came up over 90. I would get excited as h#ll and end up pulling out a big piece of iron, like a plow blade or a giant steel bolt. In my seven or so months when I used the Ace 400, everything of value (silver coins, jewlery, ect) came up in the 80 range. This is just my experince though ? -Bill
  13. I too was going to say an antique drawer pull, probably for a smaller drawer too. Very nice!
  14. Those looks stunning, Norm! Thanks for sharing, I sure hope I can find some nice pieces like that ? -Bill
  15. Howdy folks, I'm very happy to be here and always looking to meet new like-minded folks who enjoy the outdoors and in this case, metal detecting! I've only been detecting with any true effort since Feb this year ( 7 months). I bought an Garrett Ace 250 about four years ago...dug up a few nails and some bottle caps and sold it a few days later over Craigslist. I just didn't have the dedication at the time. Fast forward to this year, I started watching Youtube videos on metal detecting and started to get the bug again. I went out to Amazon and bought a horrible machine called a GC-1028 detector....basically a Chinese remolded Ace 250 from what I was able to tell. I did find some modern change and TONS of garbage. Not wanting to give it up this time, I managed to talk my wife into allowing me to get a Garrett Ace 400 for my birthday. Within two months I had pretty much mastered the tones and was collecting good amounts of change, tokens and some jewelry here around town and a few easy permissions I got. The Ace 400 works well and I don't have any problems with the machine being what it is. I bought a 5x8 coil for it and about three days after that I found my first silver coin on a permission, a 1904 Barber Quarter in pretty decent shape. My bother in law about fell down when he saw that (He runs a Whites MX Sport). no more than five feet away, I dug out a nice 1941 Mercury Dime. Good times and fond memories of my first silver coins) Fast forward a little, I'm still watching Youtube videos and thinking about upgrading to a nice waterproof machine that also supports wireless (I was getting sick of wired headphones) I figured I was going to stick with Garrett and was looking at the AT Pro or maybe the AT Max if I could come up with the cash...but all that changed when I started researching Minelab and started looking at the 600 and 800 ? Multi-IQ Freq, waterproof to around 10ft, full Bluetooth and proprietary wireless support and some pre-set search modes...add in light weight construction and easy to use controls and I was sold. I sold my AR riffle and ordered the Equinox 800. I've been using it for just under a month and have fallen in love with it! I'm still learning, but I have watched some great Youtube videos and have modified Park 1 and Field 1 to better suit my needs. Just the other day I found a very nice pure silver spoon about six inches down and it came out beautiful (gotta love silver!) Anyway, I'm sorry for the long winded intro. I'll post a few pics of the two silver coins I recently found and the silver spoon from just the other day. I'm working on my door knocking skills and need to really dive into that at some point. I'm pretty sure that's where the last of the old coins are located in this town, it's all been hit hard by detectors over the years. Many thanks to Steve Herschback for his incredible articles and links to videos on how to set up the Equinox and for providing us all with his years of detecting knowledge. See you in the forums! -Bill
