Possible Meteorite??
groundscanner replied to groundscanner's topic in Metal Detecting For Meteorites
Thanks DD!! I appreciate the ID. Still a neat find. Maybe is was dropped by a native American at some point back in the past. Who knows? MT -
I found an unusual item yesterday while metal detecting at the farm. It is egg shape and has the feel and appearance of metal, but doesn't sound off on the detector. It is a little over 2 inches long by about 1 inch across. It is heavily pitted with some crusting in some of the pits. Also there are small inclusions (visible with a loupe). Some of these inclusions are stony in appearance and a couple look similar to crystal quartz (extremely small). It seems very dense and heavy for its size and weighs 80 grams (2 3/4 oz.). The soil in the area has no natural stone or metals in the matrix. There was an old house site in this area. Any help with possible ID will be appreciated. MT

Cool finds!

By the way if I had one update wish for the ORX it would be an iron tone volume control. MT

It finally stopped raining for a couple of days and I was able to get to the farm and try out the new ORX on a couple of old tenant house sites. These old sites date from around the 1930's or so based on the coin dates. They also sit on or near older sites so you are never sure what you will find. Coin deep was too sparky for me on these sites due to the massive amounts of iron and nails. I switched back and forth between Coin Fast at 15.2 and 28.8k, standard settings with iron tone "on". I found the 28.8 frequency to be my favorite. Once while running in 15.2k I noticed a small aluminum brad on top of the ground (about the size of a match head). In 15.2 I didn't get even a peep out of it. I then switched to 28.8 and got a nice loud tone. The separation in the extreme trash was excellent! My better finds for the day was 3 Wheaties, 1 War nickel, 2 Mississippi tax tokens, 1 Louisiana tax token, part of a broken spur, a broken tent tensioner, and one D Buckle. Thanks for viewing, MT

I will dig iron on one of my sites hoping for gun tools etc. My other sites I try to avoid digging iron due to the large amounts of it. -

I would like an 8 x 5. Hasn't minelab licenced aftermarket coils for some of their other machines? -

Super fine find!! I have only found two. One was badly corroded and the other had apparently been in a fire. I am glad you were able to get out!! Warm in my area but it is raining nearly every day.I I have been holding off on getting the 6" coil in hope that they will come out with a 9" coil. HH MT -

Cal and Chase - Unfortunately I haven't used my 800 enough yet to truly be proficient with it. Nothing will make it rain every day like buying a couple of new detectors. I have been using Field 1 at the farm (nails, nails, nails) because it runs a little less noisy/hot. I occasionally will run it in Gold 1 (I like the pitch sound and it really hits hard on those low conductors). At my less trashy sites I have been running Field 2. I will likely switch to Field 2 at the farm in the future. I understand about testing against other machines. When you go long distances to your site you want to get in a quality hunt. Once again Cal, I am looking forward to your new videos! HH guys!! MT P.S. Here is a picture of an eroded area at one of my farm sites. Besides the iron, notice the small pieces of lead shot. The area has been under cultivation since the 1830's. -
My brother used a Fisher gold bug which also ran at 19 khz and he did very well with it. He found plenty of buttons with it. That being said I would expect the F19 to have similar performance. Also check Steve's review under the review section. MT

I have been mostly using Field 2, but will switch to Field 1 if conditions causes field 2 to be too chatty. On this particular camp site there is very little iron/trash and the soil is fairly mild, so I reduced the Iron Bias and the Recovery speed a bit in order to try to reach a little deeper (Field 2). That being said I did check several of my targets in other modes and certain single frequencies and was still able to get a good signal. I used Gold 1 just for chuckles for a little bit. I have been enjoying the videos of your outings and I am looking forward to your next ones!! Be safe and HH, MT -

Thanks! I particularly like the triangle base French Minie that I found. The area where most of these items were found was a great producer back in the day. We had found so few items there on previous hunts with other machines that we had begun to skip the area. I was quite impressed by the Equinox. My brother found an additional 5 minies and other cool items using his 600. When you get a chance to hunt your Union Camp using the Equinox please video the hunt and post it for us to enjoy! Thanks, MT -

Here is a photo of the finds that I had mentioned in a previous post. Nearly all of these finds were found on one small ridge that we had come to think of as being hunted out (using a variety of non-minelab detectors). Thanks for looking, MT
