Four of us loaded up and hit the much drier dirt at Rye Patch for a 4 day hunt! Our last trip was mid January to this area and it was the worse conditions with snow and mud throughout the goldfields. This trip had much better soil conditions, as I followed my month old truck ruts to my hunting spots. Sure, the soil was still moist and far from prime hunting in my preferred dry soil settings on my GPZ...but, my wet settings worked fine for me on this hunt and I just missed my 1/4 oz goal. Chasing gold is so much fun for me! Sometimes, I have so much fun hunting it with no luck my fun meter gets pegged out and I call it a day, with a skunk in tow. Today, was a Funner day with no skunks for our hunting party. Here's one I pulled out that hit the scale at 2.53 dwts...enjoying the Daytona 500 and a couple racks of ribs in the smoker! Klunker, No kidding! Yep, you never know who's out swimming in a cold duck pond this time of year...lol. Well I ended the year with a skunk and Robin, got her last dink of the year today. I'll try my luck next year, lol Rick

To all thanks for your comments! Robin and I, went to to see Star Wars yesterday! Driving home on Hwy 65 North of Lincoln, I see this car 1/4 a head of us veer off the road and a giant splash of water. Robin, calls 911 and I unload my pockets. I and another Military fellow hop the fence poised for action. This pond was dry this Summer and the vehicle seemed it was not going down any further than just above the floor boards. Our view was obstructed by the side curtain air bags, but the on lookers on the bridge said they can see a lady moving around. Then we saw her start to panic and a big bubble of air came up from the front end of the vehicle. It was going down, I grabbed a big cobble from the embankment and headed in, with my other Military Veteran. We got to the vehicle and yelled at the Gal to unlock the back door. She was under so much stress she couldn't function to unlock the back seat door, since the front door where now past the window level with water. I was pounding on the back driver seat window with the big rock and I couldn't bust it! I thought since I was on the deeper side of the vehicle, I'd pass the rock to my fellow rescuer on the other side. He gave it a couple hard knocks, when a CHP Officer swam up with his metal baton and busted it out. As he cleared the glass from the window, I noticed she had a knife in her hand. We calmed her down and I grabbed the knife, as the Officer and Military Partner pulled her from the window. The car was now basically sunk to the roof level as we made our way back to shore. Robin, had readied all her stolen Airline Blankets out to wrap the young lady with to help warm her, as the Lincoln FD arrived. She, seemed fine with no cuts or broken bones, just a small case of hypothermia and shock of her car accident. Hero, NO, but my feet took hours to warm up...lol The "Force was with us all" LuckyLundy

My Wife Robin, learned early in our marriage if she wanted to spend more time with me, she had to get involved in my outdoor adventures! She grew up in rural Iowa on a farm, so it was and easy transition to fishing and hunting, but Gold Prospecting! She, now has over 27 years of experience in all forms of gold prospecting. Excelling in metal detecting with her keen hearing and instinct to find a nuggets hiding spot has led her to countless finds. Robin, has skunked dozens in our detecting group and has often found the days largest nugget...yesterday's hunt was no exception to her ability! Steve, no dought the chart above was formulated with Australian soil conditions which I've never swung on, but hear they are nasty for detectors to say the least. I know, my hunting partners and I, dig up nuggets weekly that are way off this chart. And that's in some tough mineralized dirt of our Western States. The GPZ, is what it is...Expensive & Awesome! Merton, You back on the boat in this bad weather or hiding out in your RV? I will never sell my GB2, the best discrimination VLF in the right conditions...all about the tones, lol. I just remembered, I have two new sites for you to detect once the snow melts at the 5000' level...I've never seen a dig hole at either site and one of the spots has an old outhouse for you to climb down into! I was out for a hunt this morning before the next storm blows in. Our ground is pretty wet from the previous rain and is fairly noisy with plenty false signals to check. I was just about to shift gears on my GPZ, to rid the hot spots when I received a good solid signal that raised my right eyebrow! I busted some soil out and slid my skid in for a listen, a square nail or a nugget I tell myself from the nice tone. I plow out some more and check the hole for the booming target, it was out of the hole! So, I check the pile of dirt with no luck of the booming target. I look at my magnet, nothing stuck to it so I set it down to the side. I recheck the two piles of dirt, kicking and cussing for the missing target. I told myself check your pick one last time for a nail, I pick it up and again look at the magnet, except this time I spot the nugget stock in some dirt that was stuck to my pick! Mystery solved, can you see it...don't give up on a good target, lol. 1.60 dwts. Until the next hunt LuckyLundy

wPaul, I think you've owned every single detector known to a detectorist...lol I think you now have your favorite gold and coin machines that will last you for years of enjoyment. You keep swinging when you can, much to cold over the hill to see us mild weather lovers of Northern California. But we will be in your hood soon, come join us on the next Rye Patch hunt. Sight, Smell, Taste, Hearing, Vestibular (balance) and Proprioception (strength and movement of body) or your basic 7 senses. There are really more senses our bodies have such as sense of Temperature (hot/cold) or even Extrasensory Perception (ESP, detect here) the list goes on. We use what we where given to enhance our ability to fill our pokes. The other day out prospecting, I heard this tiny whisper of a signal. I cut down a couple inches and slid my coil in for another listen, a much better signal and one that told me was gold. My guess, was another couple inches down so busting up the dirt just a couple more inches, I noticed a glint as I was about to pull my pick and more dirt loose (left photo). I took a closer look (right Photo) and it was a dink nugget for sure...lol. I didn't smell or taste this nugget, but it's in the poke for some tasty steaks on a future shopping list. It's going to be cold and wet here in NorCal for a couple days, time for me to think where my pointy finger will lead me next! Bottom line is use your sense(s)...lol. Until the next hunt LuckyLundy
