Ring doesn't look that beefy so it could read lower. Old silver cross I found is higher than 925 and rings lower than a quarter for some reason.

I go more by sound than what any vdi will say. Clean consistent sound is always worth digging. VDI is handy to tell you the ball park of something but the way square tabs and junk can cross over I would rather have a handful of tabs and a ring than nothing at all.

what do you mean when you say clean sound? What is the pitch, high, low, mid level?

  2. Im new to detecting and have the nox 800, I've learned that the numbers dont mean as much as tone. That being said I dig everything and try to call the target before digging and the only thing I can consistently call are dimes and quarters, other coins I can call but not as accurately.

I take a silver bracelet with me to test before I get started and I get different readings depending on the location and which mode I'm in.

The only times I've passed on targets is an obvious tacklebox spill (split shot scattered everyplace) or someone did a mag dump and all I find is brass

I agree it is a big nugget but who is going to pay $200,000 for it ... even Australian?  A market is being made as we speak.

Is it worth processing any of the dirt?  Could they miss something or is it only big, DEEP nuggets?

Who is going to pay $200,000???

Since its one giant nugget its worth more than its weight as gold, I would hype it up and then auction to the highest bidder and expect $300-$500k, maybe more if its advertised properly...

Knocking the cobwebs off myself & machine, didn't really have any problems last season, actually thought the depth gauge was close enough. Most likely didn't adjust properly, I also detect by tones as well, I just wasn't use to depth gauge being that far off. I've about had it with 6 months of winter, more fun when I was younger. Bought a newer full size truck & a toy hauler come the end of August ( after a day or 2 at the Alaska State Fair ) it's off to N. Nevada 1st and then I will let the weather push me south till I end up in S. Arizona meeting up & detecting with like minded folks.... Then drive back to Alaska for summer & repeat. But it wasn't a waste of time, I did get Grizz12 on some thawed ground for his 1st detecting session, & I did find that 1961 nickel, even though I was looking for that 1st ring find, so I'm not worried.... Just have to be ready for my 1st nugget hunt trip come middle of May.

Thawed ground?? Did you forget my little ice dance that landed me on my butt?? LOL

Thanks for getting me started, I had a great time. I need to find a laminated cheat sheet like you have or start carrying the manual in a backpack.

  5. Hey Morgan, welcome from Soldotna. I look forward to meeting you and finding good stuff. Dig it and I got together the other day and had a great time. He found his first silver and I found my first .13, the NOX 800 rocks!!

  6. Thanks Steve, that's surprising but good to know. When I lived in Juneau I saw black bears just about every week when they were awake. Up here on the Peninsula I have yet to see any bears although I did have one huff at me one afternoon...

Did you wear your headphones with one ear out to listen for bears? I've been looking into different headphones that will allow me to somewhat hear what's going on around me.
