  1. When I broke my AT Pro stock dd it would false out when tapped or touched. I use a high power laser pointer 405nm to illuminate the surface and was able to see a hairline crack that was the culprit. Tapping around the edge you might be able to find the spot. Assuming you checked the connections and cable. I did repair my dd and it is usable but slightly out of spec now so I keep it as a backup. Repairing wasn't all that easy either. Because the crack is so fine you can't just smudge some epoxy in. I used a pressure pot at 60psi to force the epoxy in and though not perfect it did the trick. Lastly the epoxy I used was the standard 2 part clear which is slightly flexible and could be the reason it is slightly out of wack. For 3rd party coils I have a popular one made in the Ukraine and have been unable to contact them about possible repair/replace on that coil as they do not respond to any of my emails for the last 3 months. Your better off with coils from the original manufacturer unless the company is nice enough to talk to their customers and actually honor their warranties.
  2. Didn't know a bad coil won't hurt a vlf. I just sent my ATP back in to Garrett for repairs after breaking a coil. It was unable to calibrate to other coils after that but maybe the coil didn't mess it up or not. Garrett won't say but they did replace some parts and put in a new firmware. My repair job on the coil did work however but the coil is slightly out of tune.
  3. Nice finds. That soil looks like ash, what state was that? I have found similar buckles, thimbles and buttons up here.
  4. Seems like the coil has a short. I wouldn't risk putting it back on the machine or you may roast that too.
  5. Would the Nox work better if your not going that deep? Only real advantage on the Tiger Shark is it can go 200ft. Hate to see you spend the money on that and if something goes wrong with it there is no repairs.
  6. Have you tried your TDI and do some crude discrim on it using the gb?
  7. Best bet is use the diameter for reference. Looks like a copper or copper alloy coin. I have found a few blown out coins in my parts and cleaning them makes little or no difference as they are almost always junk below the patina. An ultrasonic cleaner with some mild ammonia and water and bit of dish detergent might take some the loose crud off. Was that in a yard or field? Fertilizers and road salt seem to be the biggest coin killers. Based on the size you have it could be just a large cent 1793-1857. Buttons in the area might help narrow down the age a bit.
  8. I actually used some high temperature silicone grease used on an old bi-metal thermometer I had to conduct the heat to the back of the unit. Probably the same stuff. Viscosity on that is the same when it is below freezing and above 200F. Will see how good it holds up this season, been pretty cold, snowy and rainy and I don't take that machine out in bad weather. The washer made the biggest difference. Glad Detecta pointed that out.
  9. Not a half baked bad idea. The issues I see is with the coil mounted on a plastic base because if that coil warps or bends it will start to go out of wack. Also wear and tear and chance of beating up the connections. Might be good on the beach shown but around here we got all kinds of sharp rocks, iron etc.
  10. Slow marketing dribble usually heightens peoples expectations and lets them down once released as they usually expect more that what it really is. I only joke with a hint of sarcasm but do like the company. Hope something cool comes out.
  11. I was only comparing what I noticed between the machines I have and noticed with similar coil sizes 10x12 on ib and 12x14 on Pi the IB is much stronger in the air but out in the field it isn't so. Does EMI effect Pi's more? I have horrible EMI in my area around my house.
  12. 82 was the transitional years for copper pennies and 83's were very rare.
  13. I thought a Pi air test is useless as it needs the ground to send the signal back unlike a IB machine. Comparing my 2 IB machines and my simple Seahunter which is a PI, the PI is much much deeper in the ground than it's air test would show and the opposite with my IB's. I noticed the SH is somewhat weaker on silver than lower conductors. Not sure if high conductors are weaker on pi's in general?
  14. Good amount of clad change. Check through them carefully, separate the copper pennies from the zinc and look for 82 and especially 83's. Look for bad strikes and double strikes too. I use a small scale to find the coppers which weigh more than 3g.
  15. Good possibility it is a real gold coin. I would think if they made it as a pendant it wouldn't be set into a bezel. Bezel may or may not be pure. Put it under a magnifying glass, look at the scratches and see if you see same metal color or if there is copper or zinc below. Sitting in the dirt I'm sure there are some scratches. Congrats!
  16. I was able to fix it for now as the o-ring was split and all working like new but I'm sure it will wear out again. I'll look on AliExpress for those, wider range of parts that don't typically show up on ebay. Was afraid if I used a 10 turn I would wear out my thumb. Thanks Sven
  17. I almost got this scoop from Deeptech but the handle is too short for me as I don't want to squat down. The scoop part looks effective but holse might be too big for the small stuff. Other option is a mud shovel but need to see if the holes are small enough on those too.
  18. Bounty Hunter Tracker ID/505: Worth it's weight in nails (less than 4" deep) Garrett AT Pro: Yes Tesoro Tejon: yes Garrett Sea Hunter MK II: No, haven't used it enough, less than 20 hours.
  19. Guess it depends on the product too. I have had items where they just replace it and not want the original back. Other products the mfg would pay the shipping both ways. I had to ship my AT Pro back for repairs to Garrett and for out of warranty stuff they charge $40+ parts and labor over and above the shipping I pay to get it there. With something like a detector if a company didn't require the user to pay to ship initially then I wonder how many frivolous shipments would be made to the company for repairs even if it could be forgot to put fresh batteries in etc...
  20. Is it just cosmetic. You can always send a picture to support at Garrett, they can advise.
  21. I thought of using a mud shovel as the rivers and ponds have a lot of heavy rocks and gravel. Beach scoop doesn't work that great. Don't think any sort of rake would work in these parts other than the beach.
  22. I had used a 17x15 coil on my AT Pro in the wet sand and it was stable in most areas vs the stock dd. Depth wise there wasn't any significant difference or not for the extra weight to swing. By no means the AT Pro can match the Nox on wet sand but just a rough comparison. In highly mineralized sand the smaller coil may fair better. I have a dedicated PI and love it at the beach, no fussing with gb and picks up on fairly small targets but I noticed it seems softer on small silver compared to a IB machine in my area. There are ares None of the detectorist with IB machines can hit as the mineralization is way too high but PI can hit without a hitch. I do dig much more trash with the PI but that really depends on the beach. You can always take your stock coil and just listen for how much iron and trash is in your area. Some beaches have little trash at all and others so riddled with iron you can't go more than a foot without digging something. Dry and damp sand the IB would do equally well with the advantage of discrimination.
