  1. Thanks.

I have no clue why the edges were so beat up. It was in a pine forest that usually destroy copper so it being bronze might explain a lot. Maybe the alloy wasn't mixed as well as it could be Bronze being copper and tin, who knows. Will go back to that area once the frost comes as much of it is shin-knee deep in poison ivy.

Does look like a small moto :0

  2. Looks like an interesting machine but seems the iron audio is non existent in all metal mode 1 but not sure. They are pretty vague on the 2 fixed discrim modes too so not sure what those cut out besides iron level. I know a few spots I wouldn't mind putting it through the paces but hard to spring $600-$700 just to see.

  3. A pewter lapel pin and when i sent the pic to a buddy I said, look at the cool matchbox car i found... didn't mention the nickels hehe.

Not one ring. I'll hit it again this fall after the killer frost that knocks some the weeds down, been a couple years since I been there.

I do find lots of nickels in parks, think your right on people digging high tones.

  4. So the Vanquish doesn't use anti gravity alien technology as depicted in the video ?

I'm less worried about notching, I find I risk losing more than just cutting out trash. It is however handy if you don't have good audio or tone roll. Granted finer notching gets you closer to the edge of good and bad targets but I think there are just too many variables that kick a particular target beyond the typical fringes.

  5. Didn't like the battery box I had so I got around to snagging a small 2xAAA box with swtich and leads already done which of course changed everything else as the dorks put the battery door on the opposite side of the switch. Anyways I printed a part out on my sla printer so the plastic is a bit fragile but gives me a working model. All soldered up it works nice, it's compact and easily detaches since it just velcro's on the top. That little backlight panel works good.

Anyone wants the cad file to fiddle with some more or have some printed on a more applicable printer like fdm or sls just pm me and I'll zip it up. I can also supply the stl.

  6. I have 2 coils on my Tejon. 8x9 conentric I use in high trash areas and parks (same thing) and a 10x12 i use for woods and fields.

I got lazy and left the widescan on and hit a local park and came across bottle cap after bottle cap and could not find a good tone break to cut them out without losing too much range.

I saved a couple and tucked them in my back yard 6" down and did a quick test. I set my 2nd discrim for break on the widescan and the primary for the concentric  and there is a huge jump between them.  Both discrim match up on other items such as coins and rings, pull tabs.

Note that both coils actually ground balance the same and the widescan can pick up the tiniest pieces of lead and foil. I have found lead pellets from a pellet gun 4-6" down with it. I can also place a cast iron hammer head half over a dime and still hear just the dime though broken signal It's there. So I am really stumped on the bottle caps. Maybe someone here knows why.

  7. You typically don't need a respirator for small plating unless you plan on planting your face 2-3 inches from your work. There are modern alternatives that are much greener and safer if you plan on getting into it. One supplier I use is Contenti and other is Casswell. Contenti used to sell some environmentally safer plating materials.

Usually you would clean the part ie ultrsonic cleaner, rinse, pickle, rinse, copper plate, rinse, nickel plate, rinse, finish plate ie gold etc. then rinse.

Spot plating with a pen is pretty cool, I did a little bit for kicks. My accuracy was limited to the wad of bandages wrapped on the supplied squashed copper tube. The pen system you got looks like a high end unit.

  8. Top left appears to be bronze, back part is broken off and worn thin. Was fairly deep in the woods under some thick pine roots. I can't really see any inscriptions other than faint hash marks and something embossed on the front.

Other has a solder seem and seems to be brass base with high copper content. Might have been plated at one time and also was found away from any signs of trash also under roots.

No idea on the age.  Anyone have any clue on them?

  9. Is the acid dip for pickling? If so there is a safer alternative at casswell that I use for pewter prior to antiquing. They also have more home version of the pen plating systems which work but are a bit cheesy.. wadd of bandage on a squashed metal tube hehe.

I never got into any full blown plating as the costs and disposal are just too high to make any kind of $$ at it and no way to compete with countries that have no epa. In any case use good ventilation with any plating, fumes aren't that healthy. Make some gold zinc pennies and toss em in corn field for fun 🙂

  10. Maybe that rough surf sucked the competition out to sea? I hit a tidal river up this way and the current is so strong in a rip you lose your footing just ankle deep! You might have to play the tide charts there to get out a bit more.

    Nice finds!

  11. Was thinking about this and came up with a conclusion. I think the signal doesn't go straight down and actually goes a bit beyond the nose and tail of the coil like a bulge so there should be a sweet spot that can be closer or further depending on gain setting.

Testing this I taped a silver dime on edge between 2 blocks and stood it up and was able to detect the coin with parallel swings even level with the coin and dropping gain brought it back to the coil size. Basically high gain will help with coins on edge as your detection area is larger and more wide spread. This gives me thought as to drop my gain when in trashy areas to narrow my detection field. Might be handy balance for those larger coils in parks etc.

Yet something else to fiddle with when out in the field 🙂
