Nokta/Makro Gold Racer & AU Gold Finder Discontinued
kac replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Minelab has the PI department pretty well dominated. Think it would be really difficult and expensive to get into that market unless they try their hand for a Manta version for beaches but with all the trash that can be a hard sell. I was looking forward to the Legend but it doesn't replace my Multi Kruzer as you can't run prospecting mode for beach hunting. That leaves a custom all metal beach mode out and only left with MF with ## tones. I use the Kruzer quite a bit at the beach in 5khz in gen mode with manual ground balancing. Works very well. Besides the shotty shells that were on the surface I snuck out a V-Nickel l believe is 1898 and a 46 rosie in less than an hour. -
New machines sell because of the bells and whistles and do make detecting fairly easy as someone can just run the numbers in a park and do well. Majority of finds are not hard to detect with just about any machine and only in the more difficult areas where there is poor ground, high emi, deep targets, masked targets and highly hunted areas do people look for that little bit of an edge. If you look back at all the hours we invest into hunting with an analog machine and learning it's language so we don't dig all that trash it is pretty daunting and not everyone has that time or are willing to do that. Lower frequencies do very well in poor ground, it's 5-10khz that wins the day in some the miserable spots and even do well at the beaches with that range. Even most jewelry with the exception of micro jewelry can easily be found with those low frequencies. Of all my machines if I was only to keep one then hands down it would be the Tesoro. Replaced my GB pot today and can't wait to get out there :)

Those are just blue jeans, Steve is much more rugged than you guys give him credit for 🙂 -

Handwarmers don't get too hot to warp the plastic? I could see how rubber banding one to your unit would keep you warm though. -
Detecting In Really Cold Weather

Temps that are really below freezing I won't dig as I think it could damage the electronics especially the built in batteries and lcd screens. For frozen ground usually woods hunting there may be just a little top ground frozen but if there is just a lot of snow then it is pointless as all your depth is given up to the snow itself. Beach hunting I am generally limited to the tide line and cuts at low. -
Testing Steve's S-shaft Prototype For Equinox
kac replied to CPT_GhostLight's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
I could do that when I get to that point, shouldn't be tough. Other option is I could machine up the connector for the coil end and ship to you. -

Thanks GB will have to measure it. Worst case scenario I'll just machine one up. -

Maybe making some Tesoros here, curious if you have lower shafts that fit them or not. -

Nice work on the S-Shaft Steve. Looks like you could mount a rubber grip to that too for other detector models or ones that have control boxes mounted on the S itself. -
Things To Do During The Storm (without A Wife)
kac replied to Skullgolddiver's topic in Metal Detecting For Jewelry
Those should work but take most the air pressure out, about 5psi should get you there. What makes the ballon tires work on sand is not only the large surface area but the low pressure that helps dispurse the weight.- 14 replies

Learning the nuances on any machine just takes time in the field digging and what you hear. Analog machines are still better for sound but takes a long time and a lot of digging to be competitive with them so your not digging so much trash. Best way to learn is get out there!

Crazy Stuff And A First! (update)
kac replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Great place to hunt. 62 there? Had to shovel my driveway so I could get out to dig 😞 Very nice seated. -
The Miriah Carey one is the best ROFL Merry xmas!

Happy Forum Birthday! That place looks promising. Where you able to figure out where the walkways were, any clotheslines locations and any gardens they may have had? Doesn't look like it had a lot of crowds or big gatherings so drops most likely near most active areas. Bet there is more there than what you plucked out.

Garrett ATX Backpack Modification
kac replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Garrett Metal Detectors
I have the Seahunter II also and use the 10x14 coil. There is no problem with sensitivity on it with small targets if disc is set to 0. I pick up some of the tiniest pieces of fish hooks and foil at descent depth but the trouble I do have with it up here in the NE lately has been EMI and the storms have been blowing up lobster traps over the place. Not having any iron checking or being able to discriminate out iron makes using it very difficult. At bets if the lobster trap pieces are long enough I will get a double beep in one direction. This puts be back to using vlf's and hunting the cuts. Curious how the Nokta Legend does in the salt. Deus with a 9" coil I doubt will get you very deep. Have used the Orx on the beach and it was ok but lacked depth. I have an Apex with 9" that works well and actually goes deeper than the Orx did and mainly use my Multi Kruzer with 12" coil at 5khz to do the job. -

Someone Bought The Tesoro Parts Inventory
kac replied to kac's topic in Compass, D-Tex, Tesoro, Etc.
Mario said he will be posting the parts on ebay, last I heard he was still doing inventory and had rented out some storage space to organize all the items. -
Nothing But Nickels (almost)
kac replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Seeing more people dig till they get tossed here. Other day saw couple guys with their foot diggers on a private soccer field. On my way back they were gone and the cops were there. Not that hard to just ask but they ruin it for others by not getting permission. -
Chart explains why I have only found mostly older Canadian clad older than 2000. I have found a few newer quarters but thinking back I had my discrim really low.

How old is that rein guide? I have a couple similar but they don't have threaded bottoms and look to be made of bronze or brass. If you go over the area again, slap the stock coil and see if you can go a bit deeper. It might have been detected quite a few years ago and the Nox with stock coil can go much deeper. Really nice places you hunt. Think that really makes the day even if pickings aren't off the charts. -
Looks like it was attached to something, mabye a leather strap with a snap to fit over a belt? I would imagine it would roll over as half of it is heavier than the other. I don't suspect that as an engineering feature but just a characteristic of the design.

Wrapping happens more on dd coils but some machines and coil combinations are worse than others. AT Pro will start to wrap at a few quarters same as Nox, Tejon with concentric doesn't seem to wrap at all but may start to get a broken signal or overload. DD on the Tejon can wrap at 2 quarters but not consistant here. Apex with 9" Detech the id's will shift at half dozen quarters and gon as high as 14 where I get blips of iron and a 99 and high tone. I haven't tried with the viper coil on that machine. The Multi Kruzer will wrap at a couple quarters with the Superfly coil at 19khz, same with 14khz but I can get a mid tone with 5khz. Odd of having a stack of quarters on end and hitting it dead on with any detector in the field is pretty low but a large silver buckel or silver dollar on edge could be skipped over as iron. One the reasons I like to either hear iron or break my discrim just at iron is so I can always double check the signal by passing in different directions. A jar of coins should sound like a big target and possibly give an overload. Easy test if you don't mind filling a jar and burying it. Good chance you will hear the lid only if its straight up.

Maybe a keychain novelty item. Think the zinc casting is supposed to be the shoreline and the acrylic the ocean. Cool find.

Good machine, you should do really well with it. I been on the fence on the warrior and gold gain. I like the higher frequencies but they get slaughtered on depth here in the north east with the rich black soil when wet. Warrior is 18khz so wouldn't do better than my Tejon. Now if they only made a Warrior that ran 5-10khz, had threshold adjust it would be pretty hard to beat in this area. Not sure why not many machines don't have separate gain and sensitivity control. Without that you can't really focus the target response for different hunting. IE deep searching or shallow recent drops jewelry etc.

Looking For Advice From California Gold Prospectors
kac replied to HardPack's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
You could use double face adhesive tape. 3m makes one for signage that is waterproof. This is also less permanent as you can use a piece of fishing line between and remove the scuff and be able to replace it. Epoxy will bind to the coil better than the scuff as epoxy doesn't really bind to acrylic that well. Just a suggestion
