Hit the beach yesterday and noticed a bunch of large vertabrae then found some dentures. Vertabrae seem human size but could be from a large animal. One the local residents said they would call it in and let the authorities figure it out. Also found 1 wheatie and 80 cents in clad!

Haven't post much lately, haven't done a lot of detecting and haven't found anything worth posting unless you count clad but thought this might be interesting. I have been doing some cleanup hunting with my Tejon, slow methodic sweeps in areas that are pretty cleaned out. I basically run my primary disc to break on a cut nail and 2nd disc I will run it lower than a tab. Any crackle hits I swipe in a couple of directions to see if it comes in clean or if I still get a hit with the alt disc (mixed targets). All faint fringe targets I will dig and generally ignore loud flat shallow targets. Last year on a hill side about 10" down I found this civ war naval button. Was just the front. This year at the bottom of the hill where I found a gold ring and yellow diamond I got another hit but not as deep. Remembering where I found the button and location of this back I believe they are the same button. Back is badly degraded but seems to be the right back for that button and there are not a lot of them in the area.

Did Minelab Multi-iq Obsolete Single Frequency?
kac replied to diggindaboot's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Target wrapping is more of an issue with dd coils than concentrics. With the exception of my Apex using the 9" Detech coil. If I start stacking quarters, most dd's will shift the breaks up at 2-4 quarters giving an iron tone. For those that don't know what wrap is, picture that the id scale goes in a circle and not just from 0-100 or -10-40. A concentric coil will also wrap but can still give a high tone and usually just maxes out on the scale. As for wrapping my mighty Tejon will wrap at 2 quarters with the larger dd, mainly because the response on high conductors is really high to start with. Higher frequencies that push the response of high conductors to the upper scale are more prone to wrapping where low frequency machines that have a wider response low high conductors and have a wider scale on the upper end tend to wrap less. Even with selectable frequency machines if you are hunting for silvers and deep coppers 5-10khz will work very well especially in high ground phase dirt. Where target wrapping on silvers can be an issue is where there maybe quarter spills, larger silvers like dollars, buckles or even quarters on edge. Easy test is just take some silver and see how your machine handles it. Make some passes over the coil, put the coins on edge and see the difference or even start stacking them and see how many it takes to get an iron id. As for the Apex with the Detech, oddly it will wrap but will max out on id's and still give both low and high tone. I have found clad silver dollars and a couple quarter spills that were in ground that were pounded by many people detecting including myself. -
That is a cool digger Tom. Started to make a folding digger here but haven't gotten around to finish it off. Blade and parts are done just have to assemble it. Really like those leather pouches, just afraid if they get wet they will get trashed.

Might be odd if they were handbags and high heals. Digging pouches are ok 🙂 New Garrett AT one is working out great, took it out for a bit today. Others are worn out but will hang onto them as backup or if someone tags along.

Did Minelab Multi-iq Obsolete Single Frequency?
kac replied to diggindaboot's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
SMF is nice if you chase numbers all day, good in high trash and mixed grounds but for the most part I still believe the right coil for the job is more important. Hell I still prefer my single tone analog and depending on grounds I'll use the concentric or dd I have for it. Still sniffing out stuff others miss. Sometimes with all the bells and whistles I get information overlaod and tend to start glossing over stuff. Single beep, isolate your target ranges and listen can be just as effective if not more. -
Got the puch in a day early. Materials are much heavier than the old Garrett pouch. Mesh bottom is only on the front which is good so you don't slop up your leg. Strap is 1/2" wider than the old pouch and super long. Had to cut it down. Zippers are much beefier so think they will last longer than the old fine zippers. Pinpointer holster fits the Minelab Profind 35 but is a little tight, too tight for the Nokta Pulse pointer but not a big deal, just hun the other holster on it with the belt clip the Nokta holster has. I have a new digger holder I am testing and it clips perfectly on the d-ring in the middle. Overall it isn't leather so I won't feel bad sloppig it up, seems much more rugged than my previous pouches. Very happy with it. Curious why Garrett didn't really advertise it or maybe I just missed it.

I remember that post now. Was the one I was going to include a pair of clean underware just in case you get that find of a lifetime but chickened out. 🙂
-
If I had known I would have tried one. Post some pics of it. Have him post some in the classified. Will give the Garrett one a good workout so will let you know how it holds up. Zippers look bigger so less likely to plug up but time will tell.

Looks like Garrett has a higher end pouch with pretty much the features I was looking for. Wore out my others, velcro on one does diddly and zipper broke on my old Garrett pouch. Was some talk on one of the threads a little bit ago on pouches but can't find it. I was almost tempted to get some made up but this one looks promising so got one on the way. https://garrett.com/accessories/recovery-tools/garrett-all-terrain-dig-pouch All Terrain Dig Pouch from Garrett Metal Detectors on Vimeo.

Only issue I ever had with Nokta machines was a faulty coil and they made good. Don't know why the coil was bad but could have been from the shipping monkeys kicking it around. I think they have an outstanding build quality and less concerned about warranty length with their products and Garret too for that matter. I am on my 3rd ML ProFind 35. Took a couple RMA's to get one that works. As for falsing on those they are sensitive to emi and don't play well with all machines. Good fresh batteries are a must on them. When starting up plant the nose of it to the dirt and you should be good to go. I usually use my Nokta Pulse Pointer (which does not like Nox's). Just find it far more dependable. It also doesn't detect small coal that I often pick up so saves me digging too much. Soon Youtbe will be flooded with the depth tests and comparisons and people zinging odd objects as fast as they can across the coils. I'll sit back and see what the member say when they use them in the real world. Think Nokta has a winner on their hands, at least for those that are not so happy with ML.

Reverse electrolysis works well on iron. I have plumbers wrenches similar to the one you found. They used to have nice wood handles. Great stuff.

No dying cats in that control box. Easy on the ears. Do wish you had user definable number of tones. The 60 tone could be a killer trash hunter if you tone down the volume on the known junk targets and keep regular volume on the know targets. This is something I do with the 4 tone mode on the Kruzer and is very effective. Basically investigate any louder audio targets.

Not As Much Silver As Some Half-dollars
kac replied to Againstmywill's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Big silver and big silver clad can wrap on dd coils very easy giving garbage sounds. Happens on my Kruzer but I can reduce the effect with a lower frequency ie switch to 5khz. Nice you spent the extra bit of time to investigate, nice! -
Looks like a dog tag. Tricky to find the owner when there is no sublte clues like a phone# or address. Found a fancy one in a pond made in silver and found the owner but she already had another made. Good find.

We will see, doubt it's a flop. Nokta has some good performing machines and don't think they will toss a fail out on the market. Too much to lose.

Nokta/Makro Legend Specs & First Photos
kac replied to Rick N. MI's topic in Nokta / Makro Legend Forum
What is tempting to me is user definable # of tones and audio control, EMI control (something the Kruzer gets hit bad by) and 3 salt modes. Think they are the first with the 3 salt mode ranges for gb? One reason I still favor my Seahunter with large coil is because ib machines typically have a drastic change in ground balaning when going from dry sand, wet sand and surf. Was one of my gripes with the Apex on one the posts little while ago and when I use the Kruzer i just manually gb the machine. Was never a fan of the beach mode on the kruzer. Multi Salt on the Apex is excellent in wet sand. We will see when it's in action. Looks like a very sturdy machine, well built and menus well thought out. -

I'd like to hear the audio on it, sounds like it has some really nice flexibility in that area. I would pass on a clock and have an old fashioned odometer 🙂 -
What Do You All Do With Your Spoons?
kac replied to strick's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Those serving spoons are pretty cool. People should keep the pewter spoons as those are very old. Most the ones I find are plated and mangled or they are modern stainless. There is usually brand marks on the underside and you can look them up, some are collectable. -

Sometimes You Just Have To Mow (update 3)

Odd you found the POD button in a field like that, found mine along an old path that was once a road between properties. Maybe the poor mailman was running for his life through the field before a pack of dogs got him and thats all thats left! Or he just took a short cut on his route.. Nice hunting. -
