if i read between the lines correctly, are you saying you you've avoided some areas with known gold because the gold to trash ratio means too much digging of trash.

interesting idea. have you ever tried taking every other riffle out, putting the thinest miners moss down then expanded metal? then the riffle bar. run the sluice as fast as you can, dont bother classifing at all, except for really big rocks.

nice gold. what city do you stay in while at rye patch? is it all claimed up? or is there a public area for prospecting?

Tom, I think you have to realize, this forum has the smartest detectorists around. No monkey see monkey do, that's why I open ears and close mouth. I will learn from these guys, but I don't sweat it too much. Take care tom, but don't forget to check in here once in awhile, it might prove to be  in your best interest.

I'm still here. But I have nothing constructive to add, except I found a dime at 6 inches. I don't know how to evaluate recovery speed, and I still don't understand the term "tone smearing". (does that make me the perfect mxs user?:))

That's too bad, I was trying to learn some things from paul. I hope he changes his mind, after all it's just a metal detector. But thanks paul for your informative posts. 

The quick response by whites was one of the reasons I bought one. I think they helped their public image with the recall. I'm confident if I have a problem, they'll take care of it . 

geez that looks like its powered by coal or steam or something.

that may not be exactly what happened, I do beta testing on equipment that cost more than most detectors, sometimes you are dealing with many firm or software files with small differences,. what can happen in the development process is a bug is found, a fix is created, the version is sent out to beta testers, fix is confirmed, but another bug is created. sometimes the other bug is caught. sometimes not. this goes on and on, files are stacked up and saved. that way you can roll back if you cause some major crash or instability.

sometimes, production uses the wrong file, which may have the new bug or an old bug that was fixed in a later file. final beta is on the production release,HOWEVER, if a fatal flaw is found production will be delayed, if its missed, the customer becomes an inadvertent part of the testing chain. also, if any hardware changes are made then firmware can be affected, so beta starts again, but may only include testing for things the change MAY have an effect on. sometimes you miss stuff. 

I'm not trying to make excuses for any company, but after being involved with beta testing for many years, I have seen some bugs slip through on expensive stuff. especially if their is a deadline set in stone to meet. it sounds easy to test for every eventuality, but in reality it's tedious and fraught with chances to make errors. I've made some. so has every company, wasn't there an update for the GPZ, with a disc too?
