  1. Thanks Steve, can’t wait to see someone post similar for the 10x5... Regards, FS
  2. I use the Bluetooth exclusively But do not use the Minelab wireless headphones because they allow a lot of ambient sound in and my moderate hearing loss makes it very difficult to hear the detector quieter tones. I use PAAW bluetooth Low Latency headphones. (I have read the newest headphone version is no longer compatible with ML BT) They block out background sounds and have a noise canceling switch that works great with ocean surf when the surf is up. Before getting those, I tried to retrofit sound deadening into the ML phones with zero improvement. YMMV HH
  3. I use the F2 settings exclusively On the beaches I hunt, there are lots of small iron, stainless steel hardware and flakes from old wrecks or maybe WWII equipment that many times ring at near coin numbers and tones. (I know the SS is not an iron tone unless old) Using F2 along with other settings like Beach 2, disc to 2, rec 4-5 and sens 23 seem to quiet down the NOX 800 and allow good tones to ring out. Then I check it in all metal to verify if there is or is not iron. Works for me but am always testing and checking. YMMV HH
  4. Thank you Steve! Agree, much to learn here and I appreciate all you do. Best regards.
  5. Why would these smaller elliptical coils be better than the 6 inch round (I just bought)? Coverage?
  6. I believe you are right. Never used the protectors but your “splint” fiber washer may work. I might do that. If I do i’ll add a washer size piece of milk jug plastic so friction is reduced between the fiber washer and nut. Someone had that idea posted somewhere. Not surprised ML has a problem with the protectors. When your new coil arrives, look at the ear break area. On each ear, there is a similar horizontal flash where the two halves of the ear came out of the mould. Probably where the mould opens up after plastic injection. Anyway ML has enough broken samples but I hope they fix this before warranty runs out or extend it for the coil ears. thanks and good luck!
  7. After almost two years, I thought I was immune too. Never water hunt, kept the coil loose and had good washers in it. It broke horizontally. I think the problem is not as much materials as the forming by injection molding with the top cooling off before the bottom of the ear. Buy who knows. Are the coils machine wrapped or by hand? New coil seems different. But may be just me.
  8. Good question, should have taken a picture of that. Several old pictures show a replaceable tip made of steel but that would have rusted away long ago. But several papers mention a joint to connect the tips similar to a locking scarf joint in woodworking. But the divider legs are broken right through without any evidence of a joint. When I saw what I had I was worried I did it with my scoop but the brass/bronze break was not shiny new looking. Hope that helps. Thanks for looking!
  9. That is a fantastic find. Never seen that symbol so must be very rare. Well done. Curious how the two of you search that large area? Do you grid it off and use a lawnmower pattern back and forth? Do you then search it over from a different direction? Never had a large field to hunt so just wanted to ask. HH
  10. Calm before the storm, could be CalCobra. And PP, that would be great but Minelab should know the issue of coil ear breakage and water intrusion make me wonder about their build reputation. One unknown not yet coming up is battery replacement. Minelab battery management is remarkable so far but if I plan to keep my 800, sooner or later it will have to be addressed. I know a few have figured it out but want to hear the Minelab solution. Once a new model is released, I might try the new one if it looks to be better in those areas.
  11. Thank you Peg and Steve! Terry Shannon met Luke several months ago when he was trying to detect on the beach. At that time his legs were beginning to swell and he feared he could not walk any distance to detect. Terry said his spirit and enthusiasm was off the charts about detecting and beating his condition. Your help is really appreciated! Best regards
  12. An Electric Wheelchair for Luke P. The Treasure Coast Archaeological Society is raising money to help fellow metal detectorist, Luke P., purchase a new electric wheelchair capable of navigating off road surfaces such as the beach. Luke is suffering from an unknown medical condition that is making it difficult to enjoy his hobby of metal detecting. He is having trouble walking for more than ten feet at a time and this wheelchair will allow him to become mobile and enjoy his outdoor hobbies. Please assist us in helping Luke! Thank you in advance. 13. I don’t have your detector but want to say you are learning and testing in a good way to get your 540 dialed in. Your experiences were very much the same as my first trips on a salt beach. I will say it helped me to bring some items to the beach, it is still an air test but you are checking on your beach soil with your beach EMI around. And for me, running with balanced settings is most important. With mine (NOX) , I noise cancel every time I change any setting including sensitivity(gain) and ground balance often as beach ground changes as you walk. My first beach hunt was in front of a beach club and I thought my machine was busted it was so noisy, turns out it was the club wifi signal. Walking away finally settled it down. When you bump shells you might get those blips but that will resolve when your coil technique settles in. The arm pain is a warning to change something. You are on the right track in physically balancing it. Try to get it physically balanced close to the hand grip if you hold it there with one finger. Also for me, whipping the coil back and forth too fast will cause some pain. Sounds like you are on your way. Phrunt will help tremendously as he has helped me. Others have also helped me here. Great site. Have fun and remember this is a normal part of learning your machine. HH
  14. Check the differences and think about the type of hunting you might do now and in the future. I hunt mostly beaches in Florida and never use the gold modes (but would if in Cali). Then there is the User mode which many people like but I don’t use it. And finally the number of frequencies in multi mode. Also do you need the WM08 module for your existing headphones? Others will be able to give you specifics and check the youtube videos on this question. Finally, I have hearing loss and the sound of crashing surf can interfere with hearing the detector. I had the included 800 wireless phones but they did almost nothing to isolate the surf sounds. I found a wireless set made by PAWW that included noise canceling and it works very well to reduce surf sounds. Make sure if you buy headphones that they are compatible with the Equinox bluetooth version. Lots of discussion on that. It has taken my 2 years to get a good grasp of how to set up (and trust) this detector. If you have a friend or detecting club there it may shorten the learning curve. Enjoy the search
  15. Interesting and consistent with me and several other salt beach hunters preferring Beach 2 with IB on. Could it be the “2” modes allow the NOX to run a little more quieter (not sure if that or balanced is the right word) and allow targets we seek to be heard more clearly?
  16. Good question. Which protector did you settle on? Or reccomend?
