  1. I received a new pair of ML-105 headphones today. Here is the "Official Diagnosis": Received ML-105 headphones, and they will not power one. Will need to replace under warranty. Oh well, maybe it was the battery, maybe it was he USB connection, or maybe they just got tired and died!!! So much for a real reason why they failed. Sometimes ya just gotta laugh and let it go!!!
  2. Jewelry store on that one. I have since started to run a specific gravity on any suspects but will still use the Jewelry store if I even suspect that the acid test or SG seems off in any way. Any named brand or high-end piece of jewelry that I find, I will consider fake until I can confirm it authenticity. (Cartier, Gucci, T&Co) Cartier has a certain Font and certain spacing and of course a serial number for each piece and the engraving is very crisp and precise.
  3. Congrats on being back on the gold trail. I have several Benchmark bands that are mostly 14K. Here is a picture of my Cartier collection. All with the same serial number "52833A". I found a real one a couple years ago and let it go for $500 and the young lady was thrilled to get it. It had a real serial number in it. The SS fake version often test positive with 18K acid so I would be wary until verified. SoCal beaches seem to be a haven for fake Cartiers. Cuniagau
  4. USPS Tracking says that the headphones were picked up by USPS at 11:03 AM Jul 17 and that the package left the Alum Bank, PA post office at 2:18 PM on the way to me. No response to my inquiry into what caused the failure. I guess they don't want users to know what will cause a failure!!! At least I have a new set in the mail. Joe
  5. Update on status of ML-105 Headphones: I received an e-mail from the repair center this morning (Jul 14) with a USPS tracking number and a "NEW ML-105 headphones" on the next line. No explanation about what they found was the reason for the failure. I did send a reply back asking if it was Battery?, Wiring?, Connector?, What? While it is nice to get a new set of ML-105s, it is also imperative to know why they failed! At least in my opinion it is imperative to know why they failed. Joe
  6. The repair center sent an email this morning (Monday July 10) to inform me that they received the headphones and would respond again when they have diagnosed the issue.
  7. I put the ML-105 headphones in the US Priority mail this morning. We will see how long it takes the service center to have me back wirelessly detecting. Joe
  8. I logged into Minelab's "Detector Center" to file out a ticket on the ML-105 headphones today. I used them yesterday, charged them yesterday evening and they were dead as a doornail this morning when I got to the beach. I was lucky enough to have the headphone cable in my car, so my hunt was not totally spoiled as the headphones worked with the cable. When I got back from the beach, I tried to charge them. I even tried with three different USB cables and with different USB to 120V outlets. The results were the same as there was never a red led light to show that they were charging. It appears that the battery is dead. That's when I logged in and started a ticket at the Detector Center. So, we will see how Minelab handles the ML-105 problems. Joe PS I have been using the Manticore since the middle of Jan.
  9. Did you do a little bit of "gold" dance? Asking for a friend. (well maybe a couple, Andy and Lance)
  10. I may need to email Tony about this issue. But I don't want to bite myself on the butt by causing incompatibility with the 3030 and the WM 08 on the Equinox by changing to a 1/8 inch plug that I know will not work on the WM 10. Minelab's proprietary everything (WM 10, WM 08, Bluetooth, waterproof plugs) is sure not doing us any favors. The work arounds are just par for the course I guess!!!
  11. UKD2User, I am using the headphone adapter on page 69 of the Manticore manual. This is the same adapter used on the Equinox 800. It is a Minelab Equinox/Manticore 1/8 waterproof male plug to a 1/4 standard headphone female plug. Again, made by Minelab to be used on a Minelab to use 3dr party headphones. But it appears to work ONLY with 3rd party headphones with a straight male plug as the issue seems to be with the 45 degree plug, if I am reading GB_Amateur's post correctly. Joe
  12. GB_Amateur, Ok, if I am reading this first post of that thread correctly, all I need to do is get a straight 1/4 inch mono to stereo adaptor and my Black Widows or any other headphones with a 45 degree 1/4 inch plug will work with the 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch (Equinox/Manticore) Minelab headphone adapter cable, to the Equinox or Manticore control unit? And will also work on my 3030 control unit as this is all that is needed to turn off the built-in speaker and sense the headphones? Joe
  13. I know that there is another thread on headphones on the Manticore and it is basically about proprietary ML 105s and the chip sets to make it work. I need some wired headphone advice. First I have a huge military related hearing loss. Mid frequencies are the main problem but with some higher and some lower loss also. That being said I have been using Black Widow headphone from my CZ 6a days to the Explorer SE Pro to the CTX 3030 to the Equinox 800 and wanted to use them with the Manticore. The CZ and the EXplorer were no problem with plugging them in and detecting. With the 3030 I plugged them into the WM 10 to be untethered and if memory serves me, they would not turn off the internal speaker on the 3030 due to the type of plug that was used. But as I used the WM 10 that was not an issue. When I got to the Equinox I bought the Headphone Adaptor Cable (1/8") to 6.35mm (1/4") and plugged it into the WM 08 and go untethered as I could get no connection by plugging it straight into the Equinox control unit. I assumed it was because of the same issue as the 3030 with the plug. But I had the WM 08, so it was not that much of an issue as I didn't venture to far into the surf. Now with the Manticore I have tried to attach the same headphone adaptor cable and still no love. But now it is an issue as there is no WM module to use. I do have underwater headphones that I can plug in BUT and it is a big BUT as all the underwater headphone lack the volume and the ability to suppress the ambient noise of the surf. I have tried the Yellow Koss, which area really crappy. I have a pair of Amphibians which are to low on volume and a pair of Tony Eisenhauer which will work but still do not have the volume of the Black Widows and do not fit my head as they are a tad bit small. So far,I do like the ML 105 but they are not wet weather headphones. (the Black Widows are not either but for the desired volume I need, I will use them if I can) So to my main question-why does the factory Headphone Adaptor Cable not work when plugged directly into the the Equinox or the Manticore? Is it a plug issue or a detector issue. If a plug issue on the Black Widows, what headphone will work with it? I did try a pair of Rattlers but they didn't work either. Help! (or at least help me understand the non-connectible issue) I know if there are guys that understand the Bluetooth Chipsets and why and how they work, so this should be a simple explanation. thanks, Joe
  14. What a great journey! And what a great ambassador for this hobby! Thanks for sharing! Those returns are priceless memories and really give good feelings to all that hear about them. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
  15. โ€œThe definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.โ€ After 3 failed attempts, the Manticore itself updated. After downloading the Ml 105 update to three different computers (multiple times each), and trying 4 different cables and jiggling the hell out of those cables to get a connection, I finally succeeded in getting the INSTALL prompt. First attempt-the prompt disappeared. The second attempt-it got to 1%. Third attempt-it got to 2% (hey, at least it was headway!!!) Fourth attempt-it made it all the way to 13%. Fifth attempt-it made it to 22%. Sixth attempt-it made it all the to 100%!!! I don't give up easily but was awfully close on this one. I think I was holding my breath the whole time on the sixth attempt. When I say "attempt", I am referring only to the times that I got an INSTALL prompt. In all, probably close to 50 tries on downloads, cable connection attempts, and the all important "jiggling" of the USB connectors. If at first you don't succeed-jiggle the hell out of the USB and expect different results. (This is a true story and probably under embellished if anything.)
  16. I seem to remember that bracelet being a two part find!!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž I have found two real Love rings and 4 fakes. Those SS fakes sure sound good don't they! All four fakes have the same serial number too.
  17. GB_Amateur, Thanks for posting the tables. I may use them in the future if I can get together the components for the measurement. At the moment, I have a local jewelry store that has an XRF scope. I am not sure how much they charge to scan a piece of jewelry, but it will tell me the gold and other metal percentages in just a few seconds. I may drive by the store today and see if they are open on Saturdays. I know during Covid they were only open by appointment, and you needed to be hazmatted up as well. I have a few other trinkets that I would like to know the composition of also. So, this may be a good excuse to get it done. thanks, Joe PS Attached is a better picture of the 4 inside the 0 but you can't see the B in this view.
  18. The stones are not real. I have only found one 14k ring with a fake stone but have several 10k rings with fake stones. I was only able to test the main (yellow gold) part of the pendant as the oval part (rose gold) is sort of recessed and the number (white gold) is somewhat recessed because of the stones, to get sample for acid testing. My electronic tester does show slightly different numbers for each of the three types of gold. The number (white gold) is slightly the highest on the electronic tester but only a click or so. It might be the 14K part but I think I need to take it to a jewelry store and see what they say. I think because the yellow gold is the "grounded" part, all three colors will read virtually the same Karat reading. A normal piece of gold jewelry is no problem confirming but Tri Gold is not something I am used to. Oh well, things like this are just icing on the cake in this hobby!!! I love a good mystery. LOL
  19. I dug this pendant yesterday May 4. My wife said that it was 10KB and I saw 14KB when I looked at it. I googled the KB to find out what the B stood for. What I found was that if it didn't come from Mexico, it meant "bonded" or plated. Well the 15 told me that it was a Quinceanera piece of jewelry, so the Mexico origin made sense. Today I tested it and it only tested 10K. I got out my 40x loupe and could clearly see that there was a 4 counter stamped inside the 0. So what I am thinking is that the B stands for bonding the Tri gold together. The main part is yellow gold, the center is Rose gold and the number is white gold. Can anyone confirm my hypothisis? Thanks, Joe
  20. KOB, I think I would have missed half the experience had I had a camera with me. The pictures never do it justice anyway. Cuniagau
  21. I guess I am a sucker for hysterical young ladies. She and her friend came up to me and asked if I could find her ring that she had lost. I said, "sure, as long as it is metal". She showed me the 50 x 50-foot area and about five minutes later it was back in her hand. From the size of the ring in her hand, I suspect that she may have snuck it out of her mother's jewelry box to impress her friends as it was a Cartier 18K Love ring. I think that might lead to hysteria too. LOL Anyway, all's well that ends well. Thanks for looking, Joe
  22. What an absolutely awesome day metal detecting on one of my beaches Thursday. I didnโ€™t find much with my metal detector but saw the best treasure ever. There was a pod of migrating gray whales that were spyhopping, spouting and breaching for about 20 minutes just offshore and down the beach from my viewpoint. I believe that there were at least 5. Spyhopping is when they go vertical and โ€œstand on their tailโ€, come straight up with their head and look around at the landscape for landmarks so that they know where they are on the migration trek. I think that maybe an older whale was teaching a younger one how to spyhop as I saw this amazing feat 8-10 times. They also breached in the normal way of just coming up and spouting and slapping their fins. One almost came completely out of the water. And I am talking about 40-50 feet long whales. They were just massive! It is just a marvel of nature. And they have been doing the migration for hundreds of years if not thousands. After the whales were out of sight a pod of 20-30 dolphins came from the other direction, breaching completely out of the water playing their way south. It almost looked like they were in a feeding frensy except they were moving way to fast. Not all of the treasure I find at the beach is 14K. LOL Have a great day!!! Cuniagau
  23. TampaBayBrad, It did raise my eyebrows a bit. LOL It was one of eight rings that hunt so it was nice to see color in the scoop and know without looking that it was gold. I think that this is my first gold ring with hallmarks on the outside. And the drawing is pretty rough depiction but also pretty accurate. It is an angry looking wolf with its mouth open as it is ready to chomp down on it's prey. My first thought for the SA was South Africa but who knows. (someone knows) LOL
