  1. Color screens on pinpointers seem gimmicky to me, especially if it has a phone app interface for setting adjustments. However, as long as the pinpointer is reasonably priced, I'm cool with it as the screen offers an option for those who don't want to pull out their phone during a hunt.

The ratcheting ability seemed promising. Still need more info to see if it's worthy to replace my F-Pulse.

Interesting but I wonder why ML still use 9V outdated batteries instead of integrated Iithium batteries which are rechargeable and much more reliable ... !?

I'm guessing it's because Minelab was more interested in finding a way to selling more products than actually developing a new/revolutionary pinpointer.

I thought the Pro-Find 35 was pretty decent, so as long as there are some solid tweaks, I think the Pro-Find 40 will be a good product.

What the Equinox 900 was to the 800, the Pro-Find 40 is to the Pro-Find 35. That's my prediction, at least.

  3. Just learned about this pin pointer and I'm intrigued...but then again any new pin pointer from a major metal detecting company catches my attention.

Based on the few videos I've seen and the Minelab website, here's my too-early conclusion about the Pro Find 40:

Compared to the Pro Find 35, this will be an improvement in terms of detection depth capability. At the very least, I imagine it will have the same sensitivity as the Pro Find 35, but will enjoy less intereference or glitching. It will also have better ratcheting or closing range, compared to the 35, too.

Compared to the XP Mi-5/6 and the Fisher F-Pulse (old version, at least), it won't be a significant improvement, but might have some nuances that make it preferable to some users from a personal-use stand point.

Finally, I'm surprised it's still using a 9V battery. My reading between the lines says this MIGHT be an indication that Minelab is either cutting corners out of laziness or simply didn't prioritize this pin pointer's development and that the Pro Find 40 is really a red version of the Pro Find 35.

All I know is that I'll stick with my F-Pulse for now. Maybe if I win a Pro Find 40 in a raffle or something I can do a direct comparision using my hunting styles and locations (like I did with the Garret Carrot and White's TRX...both of which handily lost out to my F-Pulse).

  4. The 540 and AT Max have their advantages, but given your needs, the Legend was the right choice.

And yes, the AT Max does seem to have some surprising resell value, but it's because it was overpriced* to begin with, not because you're really getting more for your metal detecting dollar.

    * Overpriced doesn't mean bad. It just means there are other options that give you more features for a particular price.

  5. Interesting observations about the F-Pulse/Tekpoint. I have the F-Pulse and have few issues with falsing and when I do, pressing the button while touching the tip to the ground solves it.

Also, I think it's too loud! I actually put a piece of electrical tape over the speaker to make it quieter. I know Fisher/Teknetics updated these pinpointers in the past year or two; not sure what effect that has on these issues, if any.

Well it could if they are series but my money says they are parallel and still 3.7v. That would give it more current, the work horse of the battery.

    I agree.

You generally want to use one cell instead of two, as that halves the chances for a bad cell to make the device inoperable. So why would Minelab go from one cell to two? Higher voltage requirements is one possibility, but like PimentoUK said, that's not a compelling reason as you can step up or down voltages fairly easily. So providing additional current is probably it...and my guess it's not that the Manticore pulls that much juice over extended periods of time. Rather, it's that the Manticore might have relatively high current draw at peak moments and Minelab engineers felt they could improve cell life by reducing the current draw on the cells.

And if this really does make such a difference, then why haven't other manufactures cottoned on to this?

How many other manufacturers have spent the time and effort to improve their SMF technology the way Minelab has?

I personally think the 50% more power thing is more of a marketing thing than anything else. But I also think that the Manticore will be able to make use of that power more effectively than the AT Max did when it was released and much of the marketing mentioned its greater sensitivity and increased power.

  8. What do you guys think about this part of the arm rest (that I circled in green)?

Room for a weight to help balance the machine or hold an extra battery pack during a hunt, a la the N/M Legend?

EDIT: Looks like it's part of the arm cuff adjustment mechanism. Still might be able to serve double duty to hold an extra battery or counterweight, though.

What we have here, is an Equinox 1000

Or a CTX 4040? I know it looks more like an Equinox than a CTX, but I get the impression it has target ID abilities like FBS II machines, but doesn't carry the slow recovery speed or weight of those machines.
