  1. Jeff, I do have the manual and am trying to understand some of the terms, so I keep reading it. I did not realize that I should not hold down on the pinpoint while doing that so I will do as you stated. The soil I have here is the type that you can actually run it through a sluice to recover flour gold, it is everywhere you look. We have even found a few diamonds less than 5 miles from our house, and we also go sluicing in several creeks near us. There may not be a ton of gold but we always come up about a 1/2 ounce each time we go for a few hours. I have to take the wife or I get in trouble when I get home. I also go ginseng hunting and I really want to learn this unit as she won't want to go just to sit and watch me walk around. Did you look at the 2 pictures above? There is some rust that stuck to the piece with the gold on it and I will get it cleaned up. The metal piece that was around the gold and the glass crumbled when I picked it up and there was something that was solid black and gooey that was on it as well. I still don't know what it was. Thanks Tim
  2. Jeff, Thanks for the input and your explanation of the targets. I am hoping to learn this unit so that I can find old relics, coins, and take a trip to find some gold. I have had the sensitivity in the 11 to 15 range and the unit in Park 2 mode for the most part. Here in Illinois we have some horrible soil as it is like our politicians unpredictable. I was at a beach area last weekend and the unit was all over the place with all the black sand on the beach. When I use the pinpoint and I dig where it shows I always have to go a few inches off center of where it shows. Is that common? Should I have the sense up to 20 the target is about 20 to 24 inches deep and that is why I keep it turned down. I always do the noise cancel and ground balance is in auto mode. I am going to print off the information you sent just to have a reminder in the car should I need it. Tim
  3. phrunt, In the morning I am going to test the unit on several items before I go out again, and hopefully I will see a difference. I can see the ID'S of coins comes up the same all the time, but when I dig down and get to the target it is always a pull tab, foil, or a can. Now you see why I said I dig everything that makes a tone.
  4. phrunt, Yes I have tried the air test method, and all my gold items show up as a different VID. My yard has no clean place to make a test patch due to all the old buildings that used to be on this location. All the items that i have found in my back yard has shown different VIDS but they all come up as trash. When I get a good tone I start digging no matter what the VID shows anymore.
  5. I have taken my Equinox 800 out several times and no matter what the tones and the VID shows all I come up with is junk. A few times I have found some pennies but mostly trash. Today I started searching an old church (1852) when I came across a tone that didn't sound like anything that I had heard before. This item was showing a solid 2 in all directions, but it said it was deep. I started digging and then about 22 inches deep I found what appeared to be a piece of glass, but it had a rusted ring around it and a disk that shows gold on it. I have no idea how much gold it is or if it is just gold leaf. Where the gold is at it is not magnetic at all. That was the only thing that I was able to find good enough to bring home except an odd looking spike. The spike is only about 6 inches long, 1/2 inch thick, with a head of about 1 inch. Have no idea what it was used for, but I thought it was cool looking. This church that I was at gave me so many tones in every part of the ground ranging form 1 to 28, and I just didn't have time to dig more than 5 holes before I had to go. So if someone would be able to help learn this new toy I would be grateful for all the help. I just want to know what I am doing wrong or is there a problem with my unit.
  6. Great find, hope you get another chance to go back again.
  7. Looks like you have done really well with what you have found. I am trying to learn my new unit and have only found junk and pull tabs.
  8. I can only dream of finding something as nice as that! Congratulations on your find.
  9. Chase, As far as the "CW gold" adventure, sounds like fun. Always up for detecting new places so we'll look into that down the road once we get your detector working for you you. I'm in Virginia, not too far away for a TN adventure. Like I stated many years ago a couple of friends and myself searched for almost 3 weeks in the area that it was lost and had it narrowed down to a much smaller area. I expect it to be buried in at least 4-5 feet of mud and that is why I made a special metal detector to reach down that far. The coils were 6 feet long and 3 feet wide. I had plastic wheels and used nylon hardware to fasten everything together. We had found milk cans at 6.5 feet with it and I know with the new equipment I can make it better today. You would have to travel to the west side of Tn. and I know a few people in the area that might put a few people up for while. When I get ready to go back down there I will give everyone a heads up of about 30 days in advance. That way people who wants to go can plan on it. I would like about 4 people total so that the split would be nice for everyone. I wanted to go out today and had mower problems and had to change my plans, but Sunday I will not be stopped.
  10. GB_Amateur, Thanks for the information and when some of this heat goes away I would love to meet up and compare the 2 units side by side. My personal email is tslavings@hotmail.com if you would like to contact me that way. Thanks
  11. Lacky, There were to many kids getting splinters when they fell off the slide, so they started putting the rock down and cured the problem. There is about 8 inches of depth with the rock so it is actually softer than the mulch. Thanks
  12. Lacky, Down her they use 1/4 inch river rock and you never know what is in it. I will try it around the swings and slides as they have several at the same area. Thanks
  13. Lacky, That is what I planed on doing on Saturday after mowing the yard. There is a sports complex with soccer fields and ball diamonds that I thought about trying to spend some time at for a couple of days. They are only about 12 miles down the road, and it would be good practice on the weekends. Which river were you in? I know my neighbor is from Idaho and he might know the area. Thanks for the input.
  14. Chase, But my main question is why did you keep sensitivity dialed down to 11 at the beach? I had to lower the sensitivity because I was getting to many targets that had nothing in the ground. Also, were you hearing hundreds of targets at the beach? Yes I was getting many false targets until turning down the sense. Did you try test targets at the beach? I did bury several coins about 6 inches down and was not able to find them again. They are still there and with some luck learning this unit I will be able to go back and find them. Not sure what you mean by target to 5. Do you mean 5 tones? I think that it was the tones, but I only tried it for a very short time and went back to the factory settings and then turned down the sensitivity. Also, when you were unable to recover targets in your yard (dug down and nothing was there), how did you pinpoint the target location? I used the pinpointer feature on the Equinox 800 to locate the spot, then dug down and moved the soil to the side about a foot away from the hole. I then scanned again and nothing showed up. Do you have a handheld pinpointer? How did you pinpoint and recover targets at the beach? The day I went to the beach my new Garret pin pointer was delivered and I did use it at the beach. Won't leave home without it when I go again. Chase at this point with all your advice I am going to leave it in the factory modes and learn it the best that I can. I am looking for some areas to practice on that are not so hot, and allow me to learn the tones better. My wife thinks that I am sweeping to fast and wants me to slow down. It takes about 2-3 seconds to go from left to right and then 2-3 seconds to go right to left. I keep everything level with the ground and try to take my time. I hope that is correct. What part of the country do you live in? There is a place in Tennessee that I really want to go to some day again. 35 years ago I built a detector from some parking lot equipment to find a lost gold shipment and would love to have a few friends go and help find it. I have narrowed down the area to a 2 mile stretch, but I know it is going to be down deep. The last time we found a VW Bug buried about 4 feet deep. We were able to dig it out and fix it up. This trip would be to locate a $500,000.00 pay wagon for the troops during the Civil War, that is why we had to go really deep. Most of the pay was gold coins and silver coins, and there was no paper money involved. Let me know if you would like to try to help find it.
  15. Chase, Thanks for responding to me and I will do my best to answer these questions. When I first started I kept everything on Park 1 and multi after I completed the noise cancel and the auto ground balance. For example, need some more clarity from the above quote - dug down and what? There was nothing there and when I checked again it did not hit on anything. I filled the hole back in and kept on going. Mode? What did the display numbers read for each target? I started with Park 1 and had several hits in the ranges of 17 - 31 and that is the only things that I tried to dig. Have you tried any other locations. I have also gone to a local beach and used Beach 1 auto with sensitivity set on 11 and I did find 6 pennies and 2 lead anchors. Everything was only about 2 inches from the top of the sand. I have yet to try my neighbors field that had an old church on it about 100 years ago. I do want to learn this and will do almost anything to so. Doubt brick pieces would cause your issues. These are full bricks that were probably laid for a landing strip during WWWI when this area was used to train some of the pilots before they went to war overseas. I heard that they built several landing strips out of the bricks and trust me when I say they are everywhere. Some areas the bricks are laid side by side for almost 100 feet and goes on for almost a 1/4 mile. They are down in the ground now about 18 to 24 inches. I found this out today when I was talking to some long time residents from the area. Any Overhead power lines in the area, electric fences, invisible dog fences, noisy power transformer? There is no overhead lines, electric fences, dog fences, or noisy transformers within a 1/2 mile of me. What mode/settings did you PRIMARILY use after you reset the machine? Most of the time I used the factory settings and used Park 1 around the house and Beach 1 at the local beach. What exactly did you set “manually”. I set the noise cancel, then manual ground balance, and target to 5. I tried to copy some settings from a youtube video that I had watched. With all that said there has been many home's in the area that did use coal, but I do not know if there was ever a house on my property before. Glaciers did make it down this far and I go panning quit often in several creeks and streams near me. My wife and I have only found a couple of ounces in the past couple of years but we did find a nice diamond last year. There is also a lot of coal being mined around here and also a coal fired power plant 10 miles down the road. I hope that this helps find a solution for what is going on. I am talking to my neighbor that is going to allow me to put a test garden on his property if his ground is any better. Thanks for taking the time to help me.
  16. bethanyb1201, Thanks for the input for what you found on this unit, I hope to learn how to understand everything that you have told me about the settings that you are using. I live 125 miles south of you near Hillsboro IL. and I will have to find a place to make a test garden in this soil and learn what you have shared. Thanks for the information!
  17. Steve, Thanks for the information and yes I did try using single frequencies instead of multi. When you stated that some areas just can't be searched is what I am wondering about for this area. The same things happened to me on my neighbors property with the same results. He lives about a half mile from me down the road. When I had seen a post very similar to mine in the same area it got me wondering if we were having the same problem. I hope that the information I posted above this helps. Thanks
  18. Chase, I will try to reply to all your questions and hope that I don't miss anything. I have had an old Bounty Hunter I think it is a Tracker IV, it only cost $79 back when I got it. All I needed it for at the time was to located some pipe inside a customers wall. When I first got my Equinox 800 I watched several videos to find out the best way to use it, and found that every time it gave a strong signal I dug down. When I stated that I have 100+ holes/targets that it showed something there I meant it. First I did a full reset on the unit and proceeded to set it manually. I did the ground balance, both auto and manual, the noise cancel, and I have tried every mode on the unit. Since I live out in the country so far we have no cell phones because they don't work here. I was about 250 feet away from the house and even turned off the wifi units in the house. About the only thing that I can think of is that there is an awful amount of bricks in the ground, but the soil is good black dirt. I have not found any nails, pull tabs, bottle caps, or trash like that. The only way that I was able to hit a target with this 800 was to lay a penny, dime, Nichol, quarter, and my wedding ring on top of the grass and then I was able to find them once the sense was turned down. I did not know if the OP was in the same area and was having the exact same thing with his unit, if so it could be the area. I hope that this helps figure something out for the both of us. As of today I have had the Equinox 800 for 1 full week and have tried using it 4 times with the same results. What is VDI as I am new to this term, I really want to learn everything I can so it will help me find relics and maybe someday gold. Thanks
  19. I forgot to check the "Notify me of replies", but really I would like to know why every time I turn it on it gives so many false tones. 100+ digs in my back yard and nothing, I have the sense down to 11, did balance, and everything that I could think of.
  20. I am also in central Illinois and have the same problems. Should anyone have an idea as to how correct tis please let me know. My Bounty Hunter Tracker works better than my 1 week old 800. Thanks
