    Bohemia,

During the beta test we were using V1.12 and when turning off the Accupoint, the voice announced "Disconnecting". Since the release of V1.13 I no longer get any audible alerts of "Connecting or Disconnecting".  Initially, I got alot of falsing until I set the sensitivity at 7, and did a frequency shift.  Now I get very little falsing, but on the occasion I do, a simple retune (quick push of the on/off button) solves the problem.

I'm running V1.13 and am still hearing "Disconnecting" often.  I did a factory reset after the update.  I'll try the frequency shift to eliminate the falsing.

    Thanks!

My Accupoint does not perform its core function well in dirt ... It does not pinpoint consistently. Numerous times yesterday when the Carrot was right over the target indicating the target strongly (a solid tone); I'd estimate one half inch away from the target; the Accupoint was completed silent. A factory reset did not solve the problem. I am likely going to return it to the retailer and forget about it.

    Were you using the headphones?

    Just clarify and inform:

Bluetooth DOES support multipoint operation (operation with multiple devices) but it has to be enabled by the firmware in the device.  The Legend Headphones DO have this feature that is how the headphones are able to connect to both the Legend detector AND the Accupoint pinpointer.

Garrett's Z-Lynk is similar to bluetooth but uses proprietary software.  It is NOT WiFi.  Proprietary wireless detector audio is also used by Quest and Minelab.  Minelab did use low latency Bluetooth for Equinox 600/800, Vanquish, and the GPX 6000 but abandoned it in favor of a proprietary variant of Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) in the Manticore, Equinox 700/900, and the X-Terra Pro.

Thanks for the clarification, C.G.!  I'm definitely not the most techy guy in the world.  I know just enough to be dangerous!  😁

There's real life dirt videos on YouTube. Here's a couple of them:

NOKTA LEGEND (FIELD HUNTING Can It Be Relied Upon?) ACCUPOINT (NOKTANANA) METAL DETECTING PINPOINTER - YouTube

First Hunt with the Nokta Nana - YouTube

I would be really surprised if Nokta put out a pinpointer that had poor depth and heavy falsing. Plus, I've read and seen pretty much everything out there from testers (including off the record testers). Not one of them reported depth or air falsing issues. The only complaint was pairing lag, but Nokta fixed that with the update.

So, given that so far, you are the only one experiencing those issues, then isn't it a possibility that you may have a defective pinpointer?

He's not the only one!  I had similar issues on a recent test hunt.

I don't think I've ever seen a real life dirt video review.  Just people unboxing it, a few air testing it, then singing its praises without actually even using it.
It's performed poorly since I got it during the beta test.  Air testing did fine, around 3 inches for most coins.  Hunting in the dirt I couldn't find targets til I was literally right on them.  Did some slow recovery with measuring the hole from when I finally got a signal and when I recovered the item, and it was always 1 inch (give or take maybe an 1/8 inch either way depending on target).  Even on shallow targets (per the Legend), I couldn't detect them from the surface with the Accupoint.  So I'd dig a shallow plug maybe 2 inches deep.  Just peel back the grass, really.  Nothing in the hole or bottom of the plug from the Accupoint.  Legend would say it's in the shallow plug, but I'd have to dissect the plug into bits until the Acupoint was almost touching it before getting a signal.  Very disheartening.
Ground balances at between 9 and 12 (depending on site).  Tried changing freq to alleviate falsing, but to no avail.
Short pressing the power button does retune it and stop the falsing, but everytime you do that you lose a little sensitivity.  So when it was giving such a piss poor depth performance already, I didn'nt like having to cripple it further just to be able to use it at all.
Since I was beta testing, I told Nokta about all of this, but received no reply.
I also have a Dr Otek MT6 Pro that I had purchased until my Accupoint arrived (my Tek Point finally died after about 7 years), and I have found that the Accupoint is as weak a pinpointer as that cheap POS.  Only thing it's got over the Dr Otek is that the Dr Otek is really sluggish, requiring you to hover over an in-range target for about a second or more before it will give a tone.

I experienced some of the same issues.

  6. What a great Review!  Thanks, 1FF18B!

I wasn’t looking for more depth as much as I wanted a BT Pinpointer for my Legend.  If I use my Z-Lynk system, it’s not as weatherproof.

I took mine out for a short 1.5-hour test run yesterday.  I updated to V1.13 and paired them at home, according to Dilek’s instructions.  They worked fine.  Neither unit automatically paired in the field.  I find that pressing the Mode button on the Headphones often helps.

Other problems I encountered besides connectivity, were constant squealing even while holding it in the air.  Pressing the button briefly stopped that.  Several times, it wouldn’t locate a target in the plug but would find my watch.  Every time I turn the Pinpointer off, a few seconds later, she says “Disconnecting”.  That’s kind of annoying.  I hadn’t noticed any deterioration of sound with the Headphones.  I’m also unsure whether I’m supposed to touch the tip to the ground when powering on to GB the unit.

From what I understand, Bluetooth is not designed to have multiple devices operating at the same time.  That’s probably why most of the companies used WIFI.  I would hazard a guess that even Garrett's Z-Lynk is based on that technology.  Going to BT gives customers more Headphone options but I haven’t had any issues with manufacturers' brands other than the unavailability of Earbuds.

OK, I finally caved (and by finally, I mean quickly) and put an order in for an AccuPOINT from Fort Bedford. The display screen is the big selling point for me since I continually mess up holding down the button on the carrot and don't know where I'm at in the settings.

My original plan was to hold of until more reviews and feedback came in, but dangit, I've been such a good boy lately and deserve an early xmas present. Plus my Garrett carrot has suddenly started falsing more frequently for some strange reason. (It's noted that the reason may very well be me creating a pretextual justification for buying a new pinpointer, however. 😉)

Anyways, looking forward to its arrival, and I'll try to post some notes once I've run it through plenty of targets in the wild.

The best gifts are the ones you buy for yourself.  You get EXACTLY what you want!

Got mine today, same deal as another got. No box but everything included.20231110_155654.thumb.jpg.88775a15b6f15c2fc184302d287f0343.jpg

I'll do some air testing and in ground testing against the Carrot, the F-Pulse, the MI-6 and the Quest Max.

@MFF18B did such a great job reviewing this pinpointer that I'll add any observations I make here. 🙂

I've seen Nokta exclude the box on other FREE PinPointers but the Legends I've sold so far all had boxes.

Yeah, that was my first concern, as well. It's an excellent feature -- being able to see the pinpointer's actual status, settings, charge, etc. -- but doesn't mean much if the screen can't hold up to substantial abuse. I'll be curious to see how these hold up over time in real world conditions.

As for the screen protector idea, I wonder how long a screen protector would hold up under typical pinpointer conditions?

I put a piece of transparent tape on mine.  Easy to change!

The replaceable tip with the little digging tool on the end are nice touches.

I hunt in some ground that is quite muddy, so the screen would become unreadable real quick. When need be, I could give it a wipe, but wonder if repeatedly doing that would scratch up the screen. Hopefully Nokta used a very scratch resistant screen. Although, the first thing I would do is put a screen protector on it, and replace it as necessary. I'm also glad the speaker isn't on the side, because in my sloppy sites, a side speaker gets totally clogged up and useless. Well anyway, it's great to be able to see the sensitivity, charge level, etc, and not have to deal with button sequences and the like.

    MFF,

What's the word on that "Audio Booster"?

It looked like it a some sort of protective strip on it.  I went ahead and put a piece of transparent tape over the screen just to be safe.

  11. I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Stanton, Arizona Training with Rusty Curry and Miguel Ardito from Garrett.

Rusty brought up the subject of “Garrett Direct” and I informed him that his Dealers weren’t happy with the competition.

His explanation was that it’s not a full-blown website with ALL of their products.  It’s simply a platform for Garrett to move their refurbished units and slow-moving items that dealers are not “pushing” or even ordering.  Also, if you walk into their headquarters, you CAN purchase a Metal Detector AT FULL MSRP, the same as Garrett Direct.

I’m feeling better about it now that I have the facts.  Garrett is still a first-rate Family Owned, U.S. Company and I will continue to offer their products.

  12. Thanks, Steve!  One hears a lot of information and claims in this industry.  It's sometimes hard to determine what' true and what's not.

I've recently read Charles Garrett's book regarding hunting in "Sand & Sea" and the Sea Hunter PI was available at its publishing in 1990.  I figured Garrett's PI progression was as you stated in your reply but maybe starting with this model, then the infinium, etc.

I recently read somewhere that White's invented Multi-Frequency but was told by Jimmy Sierra that they had to pay royalties to Minelab for the DFX.  If I'm not mistaken, Compass had a Dual Frequency machine before that.

They are definately borrowing from each other now!

  13. I recently had a conversation with a well-known Electronic Prospector about companies, technology, etc.

He stated that D/D coils go deeper than Concentric.

If that's the case, why have all the PI Gold Hunters resorted to Mono coils?

Bruce Candy and not Eric Foster invented Pulse Induction.

The story I heard was Eric Foster first approached Whites with the PI Technology and was turned down.  He then went to Minelab and the rest is History.

Minelab sold Garrett the Technology to make the Axiom.

I'd like to give Garrett a little more credit than that!

Does anybody want to chime in?

  14. Greetings!

I have a thought that I believe, would produce the biggest-selling Gold Detector the market has seen since the introduction of the Gold Bug 2.  A 71 kHz Gold Bug.  It would be the lightest VLF Gold Detector out there.

Minelab Gold Monster 1000 = 3+ lbs., with Battery

    Garrett Goldmaster 24K = 3.4 lbs.

    Nokta Gold Finder 2000 = 3.7 lbs.

Nokta Gold Kruzer = 3 lbs.

    Gold Bug = 2.5 lbs.

They could keep the Gold Bug @ 19 kHz and reintroduce the Pro model @ 71 kHz OR keep those two the same and make a Pro Model called the Gold Bug 71.

I'd buy one as soon as they were available and as a dealer would push them like crazy.

  15. I miss the good old days when Gold Prospecting machines like the Goldmaster V-SAT. the Gold Bug 2, and Lobo Super-Traq didn't have screens.  Models today are very top-heavy.  On a recent trip to Northern California, I was plagued by my detector falling over while trying to isolate the target over its 5" coil.

Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket stand?  The Arm Cuff base just isn't cutting it.

    TIA!

Congrats on the purchase! The V3i is one of the most underrated machines out there. The target analysis capabilities were way ahead of their time… Kind of makes the advanced 2D Target ID on my Manticore look primitive.

Way ahead of it's time.  Plus, the screen is color.  I can't believe we're still looking at black-and-white readouts on Metal Detectors.

Unfortunately, this tech is too complicated for Garrett to do anything with it.  They like to keep things simple!

  17. This just arrived at my doorstep yesterday from the original purchaser.  I can't wait to take it out.  I haven't swung this model in years.  When they first came out I thought they were very complicated.  I felt the same way about the XLT and DFX.  For some reason being a decade older makes a difference.   The coolest thing is all the coils will also work on my DFX!

Sounds like the beginning of the end for Garrett. I won't advertise for them anymore on my sites. I don't get why they don't try and make some new stuff?? Take a ATPRO and redesign it and make it more user-friendly and lightweight, fast more powerful like a normal company would. So long Garrett 😪🤧

I like Garrett for the most part, their machines are simple to operate. They're a family-owned US company.   However, they tend to hold on to tech for a bit.  Examples are Sea Hunter Mark 2, introduced in 1999, GTI 2500, also 1999, AT Series, Pro (2010), Gold (2011), and MAX (2018) which I only mention because to me it's just a hybrid between the Pro and Gold but with Z-Lynk Wireless.

They have a reputation for quality and service not only in the US but Worldwide.  They're in the box stores.  They have other divisions like Security and Military (Minesweeping).  They may be feeling the effects of lost sales to Minelab and Nokta.  Who knows, maybe they got too many complaints from customers that Dealers aren't stocking enough.  Those folks could still order online from the many Garrett Dealers out there.

I don't think they're going away anytime soon but their "Sport" Sales may be lacking which may have prompted this decision.  Has the Independent Dealer idea run its course?
