I always see people saying this.Ā  How often do you have to change a drive belt?Ā  Do they go bad from just normal wear?Ā  I would think that they should last a long time, I mean the old chain and shaft drive ATVs never really wore out.

I've had may RZR 570 for eight years and still have the original belt. Most of my miles on my RZR are on rocky, slow crawling trails and mostly driven in low range. I do carry an extra belt and tools to do the job. I perform yearly maintenance and service, in addition on long extended trips I grease all the lube fittings. I check the belt when doing the yearly maintenance too see how it is wearing. The only thing I've replaced so far is the battery.

Glen being in CO do you find it has enough power? Ā I really wanted to get a 570 but all my friends are saying I need to get some thing bigger engine wise like the 800. Or maybe it’s the 900 now I’m not sure. I thought that the 570 would do just as fine for dinkingĀ around and exploring. I’m not into sport/racing or going fast to tear shit up. I just don’t want to have two large adultsĀ in the machine not make it to the top of the hill LOL.

The RZR 570 has 45 horsepower compared to the no longer made RZR 800 which had 53 horsepower. Payload capacity is 740 lbs. and towing capacity of 1500 lbs. Never had a problem with power, I've had the RZR 570 on 14,000 ft mountains. The low range has plenty of climbing power and the 50" width you can maneuver tight curves and trails. Had the RZR 570 for eight years and I've had no issues at all. Here's a picture of me loading into the truck.

How do you find the RZR for prospecting?

I know there is a premium price for Side by Sides down in your parts! Ā To me they are just as important as your vehicle you use to get to the Gold Fields. Ā I use my truck now as base camp, saving the fuel and wear and tear on it sitting. Ā I got a 50ā€ wide model so it fits right between the fender wells of my truck. Ā Being so small, it will get you thru the trees of Northern California and wiggle in between the Sage Brush of the High desert. Ā The engine in my RZR is a 570 goes plenty fast and gets crazy good gas mileage. Ā Carries a ton of gear and hasn’t let me down. Ā

I agree with LuckyLundy (Rick) about the RZR 570. It's small, fits in my truck, hauls all my gear and wife and goes anywhere I dare to go. Saves a lot wear and tear on my truck.

  4. Steve Herschbach has an excellent article for coin hunting with a TDI:Ā  Steves Guide Whites TDI Coin Settings

I use a TDI, not the the TDI SL for older coin hunting in my local parks. The ground in my area is very mineralize and a VLF detector has a hard time detecting anything beyond six inches. I cherry pick the signals I get and only dig the deep targets. What I mean by this is the target sound is modulated, if the target is close the signal is loud, target signal further away will be quieter. If the GB is setup correctly and high conductors setting is used, your Indian Heads, Wheaties, Silver coins will be detected while most trash is ignored. You will not pickup foil or bottle caps, but deep wire and nails will sound good. A video that the late Reg Sniff who was involved with the design of the TDI will give you a better understanding on how the GB control works on discriminating out different targets. Reg Sniff Video

I takes awhile to master the capabilities of the TDI, but I've had very rewarding results. If you decide on getting a TDI, in my opinion get a TDI, not a TDI SL.

Glenn,Ā  So glad you were able to get out there and score another highly collectible CO specimen piece.Ā  Your pics are so beautiful and those gold pieces are genuine gems.Ā

Hopefully the family who was video taping the crazy ATV rider, now realizes how dangerous they can be and life is just a second away from being gone.

    Thanks again for sharing.

It's good to get out even if you don't find anything. 2020 has been a difficult year for us any way. Hopefully 2021 will be better. Thanks for kind words.

That was a good read and your photos were excellent.

How did you get the black background photo?

    Mitchel

I use different material for backgrounds, formica sample chips, tile samples and construction paper. Some have glossy or matte finishes. The black background in that photo is black construction paper with a matte finish. The photo program I use can duplicate the background color or change the background color, but changing the background color is a little more work.

Ā  Ā That nugget probably won't buy you much! But helping to save a life is worth a thousand nuggets! Great job on both! And great story!šŸ‘šŸ‘

We are always glad to help someone need. Late in the year there is a lot less people in the area, so if you run to trouble it can be awhile before you see someone. Sometime in the 1990's we were on our atv driving to our detecting spot and found someone who had a accident with a trail bike. His leg was pretty banged up, so we got him on the atv and my wife drove the atv and I rode his trail bike to try find some help. We were able to reach a top of a mountain and met some hikers and luckily one was a trauma nurse. They contacted search and rescue and were able to get him out. He ended up breaking is leg in several pieces and was in rehab for over a year. We met him again a decade later as he was a speaker for our club meeting on the history of the area we prospect on. He told us spent the summers there researching the area for books he was writing and always hoped he would find us and thank us for helping him. He was so thrilled to meet us again and told us the rest of the story.

What's great about the gold specimens that we find is that they are very rare and valuable. The specimens don't have to be large or have a lot of weight. Bryan Lees of Collectors EdgeĀ  appraised the gold specimens that we were displaying in the Colorado School of Mines museum. You should check out the Collectors Edge website if you are into mineral specimens.

    Here are a couple examples:

  8. In this video this lawyer claims that this person who found a 9 cwt diamond in Arkansas is responsible for paying taxes whether he sells it or not. Then he goes on and claims anything a person would find, they would pay tax on it if they sell or not. My understanding when it comes to gold (nuggets, specimens, coins, etc.) it is not taxable until you sell it. I'm not sure about other items one might find that are valuable. What's you opinion?

  9. One of our metal detecting club member has a Aliner trailer and loves it. He has solar panels to keep his battery charged and has a generator if he needs to run his air conditioner. I think this type of setup is better than sleeping in a tent or in your vehicle.

I and my wife have stayed at the Meadview RV Park and jasong is right about meeting prospectors from all over the country. The rates seems reasonable too.

When we are out in boonies and not sure about theft will occur I have vinyl coated cables with padlocks that I run through the trailer wheels, axles and leaf springs, plus have a ball hitch lock. Also I setup a trail camera if someone is coming around while we are gone.

Good to see you getting out again. Good Luck!
