... The audio has quick blips rather than long tones so large objects like a can you can hear a beep on either side of the target. At first I fount it awkward coming from doing so much all metal hunting but finding the quick beeps are far more accurate in judging size of a target and also finding it very effective in picking out targets that are in groups and or mixed in with iron...
Agree I like these quick beeps which are very accurate ,especially in the iron trash , compared to the elongated signals of other machines ...
Just I find the Apex sounds on targets a little too sharp or "abrupts" as you said in an other thread. I would have preferred a little softer audio . I hope that Garrett will change this in a future update.
Apart from this the Apex is a very nice machine , I will have more time to use it starting from next week in the plowed fields...

Actually, the purpose of these tests is to find a detector on an 11 or 13 "coil and setting a program .. which can stably detect over the limit of 35cm ... in a relatively slight mineralization of the terrain .
then we can call it technical advances in VLF detection techniques...
Hi Slavomir,
... which can stably detect over the limit of 35cm , AND efficient in the field. I say this because there are some settings with some detectors that go very deep on static depth tests ( like the DEEP program on the Deus ) , that I however found unusable in the field as soon as there is a little iron trash ...
Btw on my static depth tests my limit is rather 30cm for a 2 euro coin , but my soil is a little mineralized . Then 35cm for a 10cent coin for sure I will be interested by this machine ... Looking forward for your tests report ...

So, today was hunt #2 with the GPX 6000 at the Native village site. I wanted to try the 11” mono coil out for the whole day, as I tried the 14” coil all day yesterday. I have never done that well with EMI and mono coils on the 5000, so I was not expecting much. I actually expected that the coil would react to the ground and sound off falsing a lot. I also expected the coil to get a lot of EMI. Neither of those things happened....
What about the iron trash ? Did you dig a lot of them ? thx

To you users of these regulated-buck-booster lithium AA batteries, are these still holding up well? Also, have any of you experienced EMI from these cells?
...
I have used the Blackubes a few hours in my Vanquish 540 . I had sometimes pbs to insert the usb connectors in the batteries . As I now use an Apex with an integrated lithium battery I cant really answer to the question sorry ..

I remember 2 or 3 years ago here in France , it was in July , 27deg at 11PM , dont know in Fahrenheit sorry ... Too hot to sleep. I decided to go detecting .... And I was lucky enough to find a very nice merovingian silver coin dating from around +730 in a field at midnight ... A good day eventually ...

Took the Apex out for another quick run at the local park. For kicks and not sure why I didn't think of it before, I kicked the volume up to 8 and turned it down on my headphones so my eardrums don't burst and you can hear nuances with the targets and even hear faint signals so it isn't a beep n dig as I first thought.
Do wish Nokta had a volume adjust on their headphones. Really makes a difference.
Thanks for this info which is not in the Apex manual btw, I had this idea but never tried it in the field. Will try it asap ... I like the Garrett MS-3 volume potentiometer , the MS-3 design is perfect ... 🙂

So far I have been using the Viper coil and agree that it takes a bit to pin point with. I think that is because unlike a butterfly coil where you have a center that tapers on either end where the Tx and Rx cross over it is reletively straight giving a near equal signal from the center to the ends.
....
I have been using my Apex even in high trash areas and can see the Ripper doing a bit better in isolating targets but probably not by much.
From my standpoint I always have a pinpointer with me when using the Viper coil . I dont need the pinpointer as much with the Ripper . Anyway both coils are excellent , you cant go wrong with them ... 🙂

I don't expect too much from this multifrequency machine. With the Kruzer and Anfibio series (I own a Multi Kruzer) NM has even not managed to implement a simple noise filter, so 3 tone mode with 14 kHz is working good, but all other modes suffer from chattering (also 5 and 19 kHz) on normal conditions. It's so bad that you won't use these modes in the long run. And in 3 tone you can only work above gain 90 because below there is an hidden "ultra fast" mode which has less depth.
....
Yes I agree, for example the Apex has five tones, the same for the Vanquish 540 ... But it is not the only one , the XP Orx has only 3 tones ... I hope that the new NM SMF will have at least 5 tones ...

Hi Steve ,
I may be off topic , but I like rucksacks . For several reasons , because I have my hands free when carrying a rucksack , second it is easier to carry heavy loads with a rucksack than with an hardcase , and there are a lot of pockets in my rucksack for all my stuff ... The detector in the central pocket can be protected by adding pieces of foam ... Just an idea for easy travelling , and in the field... But a top end rucksack is required , this one is a Lafuma Landcruiser 65 and its price was around 180euros , mine is a second hand ..
-
My detection gear :
- A leather belt with the Profind 35 pinpointer and a pouch for trash and targets.
- A rucksack ( Lafuma Lancruiser 65 ) which contains a lot of things :
. the detector - here an Apex + the spade ( Fiskars Xact ) 2 parts in the central pocket
. a water bottle in the left side pocket
. my wallet , the car key , a Garmin Oregon 600 and mosquito spray in the right side pocket
. the MS-3 detector headphones in the top pocket
. etc ...🙂-

Actually on my home bed tests I did not see much depth difference between the Ripper and Viper, either for the big 10g copper coin at 11in depth or the little 3g bronze coin at 6in depth. I was a little surprised by this but I think that it comes from the coils similar ( and small ) widths , 6 in for the Viper and 5 for the Ripper . For me the Viper advantage vs the Ripper is the ground coverage and not the depth.
Btw I have just ordered the Raider 8.5 X 11 yesterday , I should receive it next week . Normally it should go deeper because it is a larger coil . I plan to use it on clean soils . I will send a post as soon as I have more infos ...

As I have up to now mainly been using the Ripper coil , I decided this time to test the stock Viper coil.
I went to a path in a wood near a small town. As usual , such paths are infested by irons of all sizes and this one was not an exception ... The soil is moderatly mineralized there.I immediately noticed a very similar behaviour between the Viper and the Ripper, short and reactive signals on targets with an excellent iron filtering.
Just the Viper has a more important coverage than the Ripper , however the Viper is a little heavier and it is more difficult to center the targets with it , a poinpointer is often required ,hopefully I had my ML Profind 35 with me ...
As usual the Apex was very easy to use despite the difficult conditions , even with this bigger Viper coil. The Apex is almost silent on the ferrous and only beeps on good targets , this is quite impressive ...
At the beginning I found quite a lot of targets but only trash . However at the end of the outing I heard a signal on the left side of the path , not very clear so I switched to Iron Audio that gave me a mix of iron and good stuff . So I decided to dig and was quite surprised to see a nice silver coin , a 1937 2 Mark probably lost by a WW2 German soldier... Never found such a coin ... Thanks Mr Garrett ... 🙂
Now I have 15 hours with the Ripper + 2 hours with the Viper and I confirm that the Apex is a very good machine , excellent on small and bigger targets . It just requires a few hours( around 10 hours ) to get used to its audio and settings . Once done it is very fun to use , not the deepest one with the Viper but frighteningly efficient in the field especially in the iron trash .. 🙂
My settings : RELICS factory mode , MF freq , SENS 7 , GB 83
At home after a little cleaning :
And the trash ...

That rumor has been going on longer than NM's SMF naming contest yet, unlike NM, XP has said nothing official about it that I am aware of. Instead, all we have seen are the Orx and the x35 coils. If you have anything more concrete regarding XP's SMF efforts from your proximity to XP as a French detectorist, please post a link or other corroborating information in the XP or Detector Comparison forums. Let's try to keep the thread focused on Nokta's SMF efforts, so if you mention other manufacturers in this thread, do so in that context.
Despite delays, at least Dilek has made consistent official announcements and updates in Videos and posts about NM's intentions regarding developing a SMF detector, while XP has made no such announcement to my knowledge and frankly has had trouble simply keeping up with demand for existing products and hasn't even been able to get their Android companion detecting app on tge Street that they announced nearly 5 years ago.
For the moment I have just feedbacks from French dealers saying that the XP SMF machine is on the way , I will try to have more detailed infos ... 🙂

Dont forget that XP is coming with a new SMF machine . There will be competitors for the new NM machine in the field ... On the other hand competition is always good for the end users ...

The narrow coil handles the tougher areas very well and not shabby on depth either.
I agree the Ripper goes deep for its size , Garrett could have proposed it as stock coil for the Apex because it is an excellent coil , very light , deep and great in iron trash

I have been wanting to do a little video like this for quite awhile but videos are definitely not my thing. Anyway, I have a contact in the storage unit auction business that lets me know when they win auctions with prospecting equipment. They recently won a unit that they are still going through that had two brand new Minelab Vanquish 540s, a basically new Tesoro Cibola and a brand new Garrett AT Pro. I bought three of them to do some testing and sell later or keep if I liked them. I sold the 540 already since I know what it can do.
This short 4 minute attempt at a video is for target ID accuracy and up averaging of IDs in mineralized dirt. This test video is of four 14kHz or higher mid level detectors on a surface US nickel, 4" nickel and 6" nickel under the gray cap, which has been buried for several years. Also there is a surface US quarter and a 6" quarter under the red cap. The detectors in order are the XP Deus, Tesoro Cibola, Garrett AT Pro and the Minelab Equinox 800.
The XP Deus is ground balanced at 87 and uses stock Coin Fast at 17.5 kHz with the 9" X35 coil, 90 sensitivity. Please pay close attention to the small vertical mineralization bar on the far right side of the display which stays half to over 2/3s full. The Cibola with the 9X8 elliptical concentric, sensitivity on 8, is set up to just notch out US nickels and hit everything higher. The headphone volume is not very loud, sorry. Notice how the Cibola deeper nickel targets are no longer notched out.......if you can hear the audio and how the Cibola can barely hit the 6" quarter which has been buried for several years. The Garrett AT Pro, 8.5"X11" DD coil is in Pro Zero with discrimination set at 35, no other notching, sensitivity on the next highest setting and ground balanced at 93. The Minelab Equinox 800 is in Park 2. It ground balanced at 2 and the EMI is so bad that sensitivity is set at 14 of 25. I left it in my custom 5 tone very harmonious setting and also did a noise cancel. Otherwise no other adjustments were made. To further handicap the Nox 800 besides using 5 tones (50 tones are more accurate) and sensitivity on 14, I also put the 6" DD coil on the 800. Watch all the way to the end if you can when I do a slightly different test with the NOX!
Again, 3 US nickel targets and 2 US quarters with the deepest targets at 6".
Thanks for watching and my apologies for this poor attempt at a test video. Turn you volume up and because I am dumb, rewind to the very beginning since it starts about 20 seconds in if you don't. My bad.
Jeff
Hi, I have looked the video but could not see the Deus screen. Never mind I understand that detecting in mild soils and mineralized are very different things . And detecting in Colorado is very different from detecting in French mild soils. Might be interesting to inform the US XP support about this VDI shifting, and see what they answer about this issue ...

Many poo poo the idea of disc, particularly since it didn’t work out to customer satisfaction with the ProFind 35, but I maintain it could be helpful provided the machine had enough range to make it effective.
I have a profind35 since 2 years now and it works very well for me including the iron disc ... I dont understand what could be wrong with this poinpointer .. Or may be I have the only one working correctly ... 🙂

I dont like fiddling with my detectors settings. I largely prefer detectors with factory settings already perfectly set. This is the case with my Deus for coin hunting. I use the nr3 "DEUS FAST" mode , I have just changed the tones to FULL TONES. Thats all ...
I have a friend that use a Deus for 1st WW relics hunting. He asked me to set his Deus for him. I set the nr1 "BASIC1" factory mode that he uses since 2 or 3 years with excellent results , I just changed the number of tones to 5 TONES, thats all.
On my Apex I use the RELICS factory mode without any change , I like this machine because the factory settings are perfectly set .
I also like the Vanquish 540 because it is easy to operate , no headache I like simple things ... 🙂 My favorite mode JEWELLERY
Not so simple btw as long as it took me a little time to find the right detection mode for each machine 🙂 , this by testing in the field and also from infos given by forum members ...

I'm happy with entry level detectors, and a very large percentage of my finds could have been done with them no problems, I regularly fire up my Ace and others for a spin, I really enjoy using them, they're great fun and do remarkably well, I think the difference between high end and low end is very exaggerated, especially in my ground for coins, jewellery and so on. It's more time behind the detector that dictates how well you do around here, more so than what detector you use.....
True for clean soils , but a little different on high iron trashed areas . You would find very little with an Ace on some areas I know over here , where a fast detector with an excellent iron filtering like a Deus/Orx , Apex , G2 , Lobo etc is required ... ( small/very small coins among hundreds of rusty nails )

I absolutely would not recommend the XP ORX for coin and jewelry detecting where you live if you will be hunting in higher mineralization...
Weird , I have had excellent results with the Orx during my testing and it is known as an excellent detector over here in France . But we use it in low to moderate mineralizations , and its behaviour may be different in higher mineralizations/different conditions ...
Concerning the Vanquish I agree the 440 V10 is a much better choice than the 540 V12 for lightness. The V12 coil weighs 440g and the V10 only weighs 360g , this makes a big difference when sweeping the detector

I would have added the XP Orx to your list , because it is the lightest machine of the market and a very good detector . Then my proposal is the following :
1. XP Orx 800g
2. Garrett Apex 1.17kg
3. Vanquish 540 1.3kg with the V12
4. Simplex+ 1.4kg
If I had to choose , I would just keep the Orx and the Apex for the final decision , because the Vanquish 540 and the Simplex+ are a little front heavy with their stock coils. It also depends on the kind of detecting that your wife plans to do ( inland , prospecting , beach , etc )... Just my opinion

I dont worry for ML , they sell a lot of Vanquish at least over here in France, this even without the GB ... 🙂

Deus Or Orx For General Coin & Jewelry Hunting?
in XP Metal Detectors
Posted
Hi,
I would choose a Deus for a single feature : the audio tones ; 5 TONES and FULLTONES for the Deus while they are limited to only 3 TONES on the Orx. For me 5 tones is a minimum . For example using 5 TONES helps me to id high conductivity targets like big copper/silver coins( high tone) , or low cond like small hammered coins ( low tone ) . FULL TONES is even more accurate , very interesting to id very low cond targets , like alu foils for example .
Apart from that I dont see much differences between the Orx and the Deus performances , as they are using the same coils . Their depth and separation are similar in the field for my European detecting conditions ( mild soils , low to high iron trash , coin hunting ) .
However the Deus has much more settings than the Orx . From my standpoint I only use the Deus factory modes with very little changes of the settings . On my Deus Lite WS4 I always use DEUS FAST , 5 TONES or FULLTONES. I know that other forum members do use expert Deus settings and they will probably answer on this ...
