I have an easy and maybe stupid question to present now...

Observing my TDI Bh, with both of the coils I own (the original 12" and the aftermarket Detech 8"), I can clearly see way too long wire around the shaft and I'm forced to make several loops up to the control box near the handle.

    ...

And it is the opposite with the Garrett Apex , their coil cables are too small for tall guys ...Just at the limit for me hopefully ... More testing from the manufacturers before delivering to the customers would probably be a good thing ... 🙂

Last week,  I attempted to power on the ML 80 headphones I use with the Equinox 800.  I purchased these new in March 2019.  They would not power on.  I charged them:  the 3 red LEDs flash for about 10 minutes and then turn off, as if headphones were charged.  But, the headphones still will not power on.

I attempted to contact my dealer and ML, but neither have yet responded.  Does anybody have any novel ideas to try, or troubleshooting, remedies?  I would greatly appreciate the help!

    Thanks,

Hi ,I had an issue with my ML80 headphones a year ago. The ON/OFF button was broken . I sent it back to my seller and they sent me a brand new one. May be it is related with your pb I dont know ... Anyway those ML80 buttons are fragile compared to the Garrett MS3 headphones for example

    • Today I went to a site that I was trying to find the rest of a “Civil War gold corps badge”, I found part of it a few months ago with my DEUS....thinking that if any machine will find the rest of it the Tarsacci will find it.
    • The target separation with that 12 inch coil is pretty awesome!  But, it didn’t happen.  Not today anyways.  But I was in the area we gridded and the tarsacci was hitting some very deep brass and under the iron, that just keeps impressing me about this machine! I know one of the targets was at least 15 inches!

I will have to get a new shovel if this keeps up! I think Dimitar needs to include a taller shovel with every sale of the “Tarsacci”!!

No Silver yet with the tarsacci, but I know thats coming!

Is the soil mineralized or just mild ? thx

I figured I needed a smaller coil for the Apex, so ordered and it just showed up. Ground is thawing so should be able to use very soon. I like this detector and this coil makes it a real featherweight. 2 lbs 7.7 oz or 2.48 lbs with scuff cover. I like small coils and this is a sweetie, well made, and nice to buy a coil and a cover for reasonable price for once, $119 plus $10 for scuff cover. Garrett part# 2223800

Looking forward for your tests in the field . I found it excellent in high iron trashed areas , and very sensible to tiny targets . ..   Yes it looks like a very nice coil ...

I thank you for your concern and like you say I need to live in the present.
If I got a Nox that would make my third one I’ve had . The other two you said something about I’ll pass for now.

     ...

Chuck, if I understand well you are looking for a beach detector and not a ML, why not the Apex ? I have never tested it at the sea but my seller ( Bruno of Lutece Detection in Paris ) has seriously tested it a few weeks ago at the beach in Bretagne ( French West coast ) .  He told me that it is a very good beach detector ... And this guy is very experienced ...

    Hi Ridge Runner ,

If I had an advice it would be : do not live in the future but rather live in  the present. If you look for a multifreq detector there are 3 excellent machines available right now : The ML Equinox ,  Vanquish and probably the Garrett Apex.

I say probably for the Apex because I have not yet finished my tests and I need more hours with it , but from what I saw it is a very good machine especially in iron trash areas .

    Hope that helps a little ...  🙂

That is the most intriguing part of your report, IMO.  I'm pretty sure Monte has an Apex in his arsenal and I hope he brings it to Wells in June.  Either way I'll be interested in hearing his opinion on this capability.

    ...

Yes it is for me what makes the difference for me beween the Apex and the ML mulifreqs ( Vanquish , Equinox , Etrac ... ).  the Apex is almost silent in high iron trashed areas while the MLs are noisy and quite unstable there .  On the other hand the MLs seem to be deeper than the Apex on big coins in low/medium iron trashed areas

Funny how different people like different things. I really like the rod on the Apex, though Garrett could upgrade the twist locks. Only brand I’ve seen where those have to be assembled on arrival. But once done, they work. I think the rod is exceptionally stout, no wiggle. The grip and my hand get on just fine. I prefer S rods on detectors under three pounds, so good there.

There is actually very little not to like about the Apex, and I am happy to hear this one had a bad coil. My own use of the Apex has been pretty positive, and had me scratching my head in puzzlement at some of the negative reports. Batch of bad coils?

    ...

Concerning the rod , I  prefer the Vanquish or Deus telescopic rods . They are faster to assemblei in the field. They can be adjusted very  precisely and they are lighter than the Apex rod, at least for the Deus. Just my opinion

A quick summary of the Apex pros and cons from my standpoint  :

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

     - The things that I like about the Apex  :

. excellent iron filtering on iron trashed areas

. fast and reactive/accurate on targets

. sensitive to tiny targets like small/very small coins as well as bigger ones ( multifrequency )

     . the thin control box

     . simple to use

. the excellent MS3 wireless headphones

     . the excellent Ripper coil

    - The things that I do not like about the Apex  :

     . the rod

. the weight/balance which is good but not as good as a Deus or Orx:

           ( Apex ripper 1140g , Apex viper 1210g , Deus Orx 800g )

     . no dedicated backlight button

. the running freq mode ( 5,10,15,20, MF or MS)  not displayed on the main detection screen

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So globally the results are largely positive up to now  .... to be confirmed with more tests ...

Ha yes my seller told me he has now a few Apex customers having the false signal issue. He thinks that Garrett had a pb with some of the first hundreds of Apex delivered to customers ... But he does not know exactly the technical reason .

Apart from that the weather is warm over here , 22 celsius deg today ...  🙂

  9. Good news, I have eventually received my Apex back from the European Garrett support ... 🙂
My seller ( Bruno at Lutece detection in Paris ) told me that the pb ( false signals etc see above ) came from a faulty coil .  So I received my Apex with a brand new Viper coil , plus a 5X8 Ripper coil that Bruno asked me to test.

I decided to restart the tests from the beginning with the static tests on my tests boxes / different targets at
different depths. The results were good for both coils , but I decided to try first the Ripper in the field ,
because I have been very impressed by its light weight ( 330g instead of 400g for the Viper ) and I like light machines ...
And also because in france we often detect in iron infested sites , the Viper is a little too big for that
and for me the Ripper has the perfect size for searching small/very small coils in nail beds ..

So I went to one of my favorite testing locations , a wood near a small town .
The soil there is infested with iron trash dating from the medieval up to modern times.
A very good place for testing machines in a very difficult iron trashed environment.

I will give more details in a new thread , but to summarize the Apex + Ripper have done an excellent
job   🙂 . First the Apex has an excellent iron filtering , it was almost silent on the nail bed , just beeping
on the good targets , very impressive . The Apex is also very fast , it is much more reactive than a Vanquish or
even an Equinox . The signals on targets are very sharp and accurate , perhaps a little too sharp btw ,
but it is just a matter of getting used to the audio I think .

Also the wireless headphones MS3 Zlynk are excellent , no latency and very reliable.

For info I used the MF mode during all this test

No treasure found during this short outing, mainly 1st WW rubbish , but again I have been very impressed
by the Apex with the ripper coil. Clearly at Garretts they have designed/tested the Apex to work on high iron trash environments., as stated in their Apex marketing brochure. And it looks like they have done a very good job ...

Just a few things that I do not like , for example the shaft which is clearly outdated

Now I need to confirm all this and detect more hours with the Apex to check that everything is ok  ,
no more falsing etc , I will detail all this in the new dedicated thread ...

A few pics below , the Apex with a Quest X5 , the Viper and the Ripper coils , the Apex + Ripper weight , and the wood ..

Yeah I didn’t manage to get out but I will tomorrow thanks for the advice all taken in and can’t wait to try it out

It is a common error for beginners to try a detector in a yard .  But such areas near houses are the worst locations for learning MD because they contain a lot of trash : big and small irons , aluminium bits/foils etc ...  The good thing to do is to find a "quiet" area , away from houses , buildings and powerlines  . Open fields or woods/forests are good places where to start.

As said above the Vanquish series are very reliable machines and I am quite sure that it will go much better for you and your 540 in a quieter area  🙂...

  11. Yes the frequency is the only setting that I change on the field. I have a 9 HF white coil.

    - 14 khz for low iron trashed areas

    - 30khz for high iron trashed areas.

    - 50khz on ultra high iron trashed areas but I rarely use it  because of a too important loss of depth

    5 tones or fulltones

  12. I think that an "Impulse GR" , GR for Gold and Relic dedicated to inland hunting  on both hot and mild soils  ,
with good iron disc and without salt compensation/waterproof to reduce the costs , would probably be a success story because the market of inland gold prospectors and relic hunters is much bigger than the beach detecting one to my opinion.

I would be the first to buy such a machine if it performs well , and if it is not too expensive of course , around 1500e ?  .... Or even less ...  🙂

  13. It would be interesting to know the number of units per model sold by each brand/manufacturer. Then we would have a clear idea of the winners .

Concerning ML , their last 2 VLF detectors , the Equinox and the Vanquish , are very good machines . They have done a very good job , so it is logical and normal that their business is going well ...

  14. Hi ,

From my standpoint I find the Equinox a little too complex for a beginner.  I would personally go for a simpler machine

Then you need to define your detecting conditions :

    - do you detect in the water ?  --> then you need a waterproof machine

    - do you detect on high mineralized soil ? --> then you need a ground balance setting

    - do you need a light machine or has it no importance for you ?

    etc ....

And yes take your time before buying  ...

  15. It was in 1998 , I was 36 years old. Me and my cousin we joined a friend who was detecting in a wood close to my house.  My cousin was digging and I was guiding them in the wood. At this moment I remember having thought " hey this stupid hobby is not for me ..." .   However a few weeks later I decided to give a try and we went to Paris to buy a machine. It was a Tesoro Silver Sabre MM for me and a Tesoro Amigo for my cousin .

Still in the hobby 23 years later ... 🙂

  16. My todays short outing in a wood near a small town with the 540/V10 .  A feudal coin at the first signal ! 🙂 VDI +6 .

I have not yet identified it but it is probably a 12nd or 13rd century coin .  I have already been there with other machines , and I missed that one ... I always use my Vanquish in woods because it is more accurate and a little deeper than the Deus ...  I was also using my new Blackube rechargeable lithium batteries .

Definitely a very good machine this Vanquish ... 🙂

  17. I agree with the above posts , I very often use the ALL METAL mode on my 540 and if I had to choose between a 340 and a 440 I would go for the 440 just for this single feature ( dedicated button on the 440 ).

If you add to this more features like more volume segments , disc segments levels etc , this with still a low price , the 440 is clearly an excellent choice .For example there are only 3 levels for the audio volume on the 340 I found it not accurate enough to adjust it at the right level.

Concerning the audio tones and tones breaks , I only use ( hear ) them as an indication , but I more rely on the screen VDIs which are of course much more accurate than the 3 audio tones in terms of identification .

    • One Silver Coin
    • One Indian Head Cent
    • One Buffalo Nickel
    • One "V" Nickel

The challenge will be un-masking a silver coin - given the cherry picked nature and masked potential targets of this site.  Challenging in a different way will be finding the lower conductors in the heavy trash area (for example, the few nickels I have recovered, were at a ratio of at least 1 in 25 tabs - all coming in at either solid 12 or 13 on my Equinox).  I will start by trying to use the technology of my machines, and develop my ability to decipher what they are telling me especially in the areas where I have uncovered the wheat cents near the trees, and hopefully making me a better detectorist in the process.  However, I am not shy from endeavoring to start “cleaning out” small sections of the site at a time, which will be lots of trash digging, but if I have learned nothing from my experience and all the posts from more experienced detectorists than me… a site is NEVER hunted out.

If nothing else – posting it here will keep me motivated to strive toward the goal.  I will follow up with my progress in much shorter forum posts, I promise 😊.

    HH in 2021 everyone.  ~Tim.

Hi , if you have a high iron or aluminium trash density then probably the smaller coils would give the best results because big coils tend to overlap several targets at the same time ( which is called iron masking in the case of iron trash )  .

The Equinox with the 6coil is very good in iron trash , the Vanquish with the V18 or V10 too ...  And it is much faster to center/pinpoint targets with small coils than with big ones ....  HH

I have an SH and it wears me out from weight, like soreness from a workout but not long lasting pain. Some claim there is another effect to the s-shaft at the end of the swing, reducing tilt. I also think that it effectively moves the coil further from your feet with a lesser angle of the forearm, possibly reducing how much I have to extend the lower rod and reducing the lever arm length forward of the handle. It may be enough to shift the effect on my arm to reduce or eliminate he pain.

Anyway, just want to try it on the Equinox and perhaps try an F75 that is like the  Caddy of ergo to some. I may me disappointed and can always sell it if bought at the right price without losing much.

A Vanquish with the 10x7 may be the answer for most of the clean up work with the Equinox for the specialty and depth work with the 11” and 6”.

    ...

Yes a S shaft reduces the  tilt of the detector under the wrist, so it is always better to use a S shaft rather than a straight shaft.

Concerning the F75 ergonomy I have tested a T2 a few years ago , although it has excellent electronics it weights 1,57kg without coil cover compared to the 1.26lkg of the Equinox .Even if the T2 is well balanced you have still the inertia of the machine to sweep that it directly related to the weight. So the T2/F75 is not the best choice in terms of sweeping ergonomy to my opinion.

The Vanquish with a V10 coil weights 1.2kg , it has a good ergonomy with the light V10 coil ( 360grams ).  This ergo can even be improved using lithium batteries and carbon shafts . But the lighter machines at the moment are the wireless XPs Deus and Orx ( 0.75kg for the Orx 22 HF )
