Im getting music on all frequencies. I just have to deal with it.   I’ve mentioned the problem to nasa-Tom but didn’t get an answer to correct the issue.  Ive asked my local hunting partner Paul who also uses the MDT  to go out to this city park to see if his machine does the same.  Could it be I have a defective machine?  I don’t know. 
 

At the dry river I haven’t tried salt mode as this is a freshwater river I will try it next time I’m there.  There is lots of  metal junk tossed into this river like a dumping ground over the years and the MDT  handles it well. I cannot use my  T2 as it just overloads in areas I hunt because of high mineralization in the ground. Pulling pulltabs and bottle caps at depths of over 10 inches so it doing its job on deep targets. (I hate those aluminum foil covered  Modelo beer caps)   I’ve read 2 beach hunters using the Tarsacci were comparing their machines on a saltwater beach same settings and one was able to run full sensitivity 9, threshold 0 with no issues and the other had erratic behavior had to lower sensitivity a bit.  Depth was the same.   Could there be a difference in how coils are made?   Maybe.  I think the MDT does a fantastic job in bad ground and see targets in between a few old square nails better than my T2. 
 

 

 I dont think you have a defective unit but have awfully strong radio freq/waves getting picked up....free music though if you look on the bright side! I try to stay away from transmittors and pylons.....they dont mix well with detectors.

Pull tabs and bottletops are the curse we must suffer. However in MIX mode a lot of the ferrous bottlecaps give off a "hollow tinny" sound and may tid in at 16/18 depending upon depth.. Its only through trial and error you get to be right 80% of the time and not dig them. Pull tabs and caps may/may not (depending upon your sweep speed) give a "double" sound......most times tid jumping around or shifting centre equates junk. Caveat.....  a ring can also (via slow sweep speed)  give a double sound, but the tid will be steady with a nice chink on the end. 

I have no one here to go side by side with to replicate settings at the SAME beach on a same day so cannot comment there. I know that every time I go out I find "todays" settings to differ from "yesterdays" ....attributed to temperature, humidity, rain, changes in conditions etc. A reason why one had a more erratic unit at same settings is perhaps sand between the coil and coil cover.....something to be aware of and keep clean.

Great finds! I use a piece of blue chalk to highlight letters on worn coins  after semi cleaning.....helps identify if there is enough there to read.

  I use it while I’m park hunting in the city with a few radio stations in the area the blacksand sand mode  quiets the EMI but doesn’t quiet the music I get in my headphones. Nothing seems to get rid of the music reception I’m getting it’s not very loud I’ve never experienced anything like this with my other detectors. At the dry river when running full power I get erratic behavior but as soon as I turn on blacksand mode it goes away.  I’d rather have blacksand mode on than have to lower my sensitivity/threshold. Seems like I’m the only one who always uses it.

Hi Denny, Yes I do at times use BLKS.  Unfortunately there doesnt sèm to be a +- frequency shift like the XP Deus, plus this unit is not a vlf. so I cant help you with the music. Do you hear it on each frequency or only 1.?There are some mediums  ( certain rocks/gravel) where you can run the Tarsacci too hot so bearing in mind full on doesnt mean more depth, as the depth is there even with lower settings....it is more a case of having  first off your GB and SALT balanced for a quiet unit, then play with the TH & SENS, possibly even turn TRACK on. I had a patch of gravel, sand and who knows what minerals play havoc and had me pushing buttons until I could run it quiet. 

Not only will the SALT balance see through/eliminate coke, it will also do the same for seaweed and mussel beds if you are hunting rocks. Great to see a video showing how to balance salinity!

It was a rather strange day today ......broad spectrum of finds and dates of coins.  BUT .........I got a tiny 9ct gold stud earring in black sand mix. A nice old penny, the other penny is just too far gone to see a date. Another coin for the scrap. Hubby ran off with the stainless steel hose clip thingys......guess some junk is useful eh? 

Good practise for many Gerry. I would like to add to your "better have good coil control" with another exercise. This is best done over water , but sand or grass will do too. Tilt the front of your coil ever so slightly down, and watch how you skim across the water. Is it an even stroke or did you dunk or miss in places? You will find if you swing from your shoulder or elbow too...or both. Now this exercise is only to get the basics of coil swing or test your own coil control.....I dont mean for you to detect like this!  Height of coil hunting is a personal choice.....but the lower the better, just watch for rocks!  I am not a fan of scuffing or scrubbing.....the coil will give false signals......besides I feel its rather mean to rub its nose in the dirt all day. 😆Try different swing speeds as Gerry suggested......it is the difference of hearing/not hearing or only catching the edge of a target.  Patience and practise always produces results, as does getting "basics" right. Try dressage on a horse like I used to do......the hours spent on basics made transitioning into other disciplines a breeze. I wish all manufacturers would give shafts the ability to telescope like the XP Deus or Tarsacci MDT 800  without having those awful holes and spring buttons. Makes life so much easier, but then again unless they are able to secure tight, water hunting would be a nightmare.

Thanks. The depth wasn't great......guesstimate 8 to 10 inches. The old 20 cent was a lot deeper. To me I was pleased with the fact that such a small rather dainty gold ring was found in such conditions and I beat the incoming tide too😎

Hi Carolina. The existing coil is 11 x 9.  I have both the NZ coil for highly mineralised soils and magnetic black iron sands (which I was the tester for) and also the standard USA coil and have had my unit since Feb 2019.

As for hunting the damp or wet swash area, (that is primarily what I hunt on the beach) the current sized coil gets targets at depth and is a good size. 

Relic hunting? I wouldnt want a bigger coil......rather a smaller one to concentrate on smaller areas under the coil. 

Swing speed is important.....too fast and you will miss small stuff or only catch the edge. There is no need to scuff the surface as some do as it will give false signals. 

Also, of GREAT importance is headphones. They make a good detector better, and the Tarsacci, an excellent detector.....par excellence!!!!!  I am using Sennheiser HD400S which really seperates low, mid and high tones in MIX mode. I learnt long ago quality headphones increase finds over what is usually "good" headphones supplied with detector.

And so you should be tempted! Lol. I have the Tarsacci and an older XP Deus......nice combo which covers the bed of nails/trash before getting down deep and dirty. In fact, you could if you really wanted to.....combo an ace 250, AT Pro or any other VLF with it.

As Ive said previously, I grab theTarsacci which s used over 90% of the time. It is hands down the best and deepest on wet sand Ive used. That said, I also use a set of Sennheiser headphones, but the ones that come with it are above standard, although not waterproof.  Relic hunting......great iron audio. If there is a something there, you will find it.......on the beach (wet or dry) tiny bits of copper to 24 carat gold to dirt and all manner of relics and also mud.....wow, glorious mud /black sand combo has given me old pennies and silver plus jewellery.

I know it seems expensive,  so Ill put it this way. Would I sell mine?...NO.!!! Would I buy another?....YES!!!!  .....And this does not mean I down any other detectors and their performances, but believe in getting one that is suited to my style and type of hunting, bearing in mind my hunting conditions.  My old detectors of past have all been very good to me 😊 and still are at times.

CONGRATS!!!!!!! You must be chuffed adding that one to your collection. Makes your day, week when something like that turns up out of a hole......would need a hand to put your eyeballs back in 😊

Went out with 3 hunting buddies slopping in the muddy blackish sand for a few coins and a small 1.3gr 9ct gold ring. Still waiting for beaches to do more of a move. Photo of my medium dug hole which only produced an old 20 cent, but happy with depth the Tarsacci got. The others only got 3 coins between them so hard hunting with so few targets around at the moment. Happy with 1944 shilling......1946 3d is toast.

Not tin, so pewter possibly. Ring is 2 tone, think s/s and goldy colour......nice heavy one anyhow. No markings. Badge is soaking in water......didn't want to risk any acids on unknown metal, especially pewter. Might need wart remover on it!!!!😉

Back to Maraetai Beach Monday as tide was a little further out this time.

Dug a crater for the shield/badge which so far I cant ID, and even the metal has me beat. Its not lead, iron, aluminium, silver. Possibly pewter? Anyway, it is busy soaking but awfully fragile. Not fragile in its thickness, but fragile from sea crust and age. Most unusual to have the word Chancellor on the back, with embossed fleur de lis on the front. Maybe of French origin???

  The crusty ring cleaned up well. Not many finds, but unusual finds....which is what interests me more. Again, trash and all......😉

Maraetai Beach, NZ.....one of the most hunted beaches by PI's, VLF's and a local experienced resident with an Equinox 800. Hopefully beach will be on the move shortly by the looks of this lot. Finding an apostle teaspoon was the biggest surprise!!!!

Photos is trash and all, then a bit of a clean up. Crustys were DEEP! Broke most of the blobby crud off coins before photo so I had an idea of what I had.

Photo taken last year of cleaned and preserved military buttons from 12th Regiment in NZ Land Wars 1860s using Treborius preservation wax.

This was when I was getting started with the Tarsacci.  As I was far more familiar with the XP Deus, it found the majority of these, but then when I thought I had cleaned out my gridded patch, I swapped to the Tarsacci and found about another 6 at greater depths in highly mineralised soil.

It is a crying shame finding these in such condition.....deteriorated from age, fertilisers, lime, animal urine and soil minerals.

Hi Phrunt, my detectors, finds and Soul are all intertwined, so posting photos is like baring my soul.......a bit unnerving to a hunter who would rather have a low profile, along with the fact NZ history to be found is rather far and few between.....plus our hypocritical antiquities law. Being a hunter, not photographer doesnt help, but I will give it a go.

What I WILL say is that in the year I have used the Tarsacci in demanding and difficult conditions it has given me some amazing finds both in  black iron sand and highly mineralised dirt.....and some ground had already been pounded by other brand detectors.  Even trash has been dug at great depths.....but I doubt anyone wants to see those photos!!!! 

Targets found by anyone at xxxx depth, is the depth where it is found,.....that is not an indication of what depth a detector can achieve. For example, I never retrieved a target at a truly unbelievable depth in black sand/ mud / ocean with the Tarsacci and my hunting buddy and I have to go back and try and find the spot to do so. Tide came in too quick. Then again......who wants to dig to Africa every hole??????

My depths in the above photo varied from a few inches to 16 inches. Yes there were deeper signals but not digging that far in that heat which is why a revisit is on the cards. The Auckland region is not as prolific in targets as other parts of the country so we really have to work for the good stuff. As Steve H says.....finding a spot no one has visited is the key., and thats getting harder each year.

The day ended up too hot for man nor beast and my hunting buddy and I ended up in the water to cool off. We havent had rain since 1st week of December so relic hunting in dirt is out!!!!  The spot we went to was mixture of Black Iron sand, quartz sand and rocks I had to turn over. Iron and nails were in abundant supply but we will revisit here in cooler weather. I suspect people in the past with PI machines have snuck into this spot guaging by the mixed dates of targets found so the finds we were after were not as plentiful as they should have been , however I was happy with what I got and the performance of unit in hard hunting conditions.  Photo includes the trash before sussing out cherry picking.

Jews harp (broken unfortunately) , musket/pistol ball, 1889 UK penny, Nz pennies 1961,1946, bent apostle reaspoon, button from S.W.Silver &Co, London clothiers, oarlock.....which looks old but I cannot date, square nails which straight away tells me 1800s site and etc.

Hi Kac, No the silver cleaner doesn't smell like ammonia. On the back of the Hagerty tub it just lists ingredients as ...."according to EC recommendation:phosphates 5-15%soap, anionic surfactants less than 5%.". Guess the rest is secret......???? It works though!

1 NZD = .64 cents USD   Normally $2 for 1 scoop and over 40 different flavours.

13 scoops on that biggie......you would never eat that one in this heat!!!!  I've seen people queued out the door and part way down the street in summer, especially weekends when the buses pull in......been like that year after year! Also seen blobs of icecream on the pavement.... only a few have turbo choppers! 😂😉😅 Pokeno also famous for its bacon too.

No scratch foam and so easy to use. Normal polishing of silver, even plated, will remove over time a microscopic layer. This product doesnt, and I use it on silver coins and jewellery. This tub has so far lasted me over 10 years! although Im near empty now.

Photo of CLR.....great for rusty coins, rusty rings but dilute, soak for 10 minutes max, swish around, then rinse well in soapy water. A step further is to neutralize the acids with a soak in baking soda or baking powder and water. May need a repeat on very bad rusty coins. DO NOT GET IT ON YOUR SKIN in its neat form.....it will burn!!!, so be careful. I put my rusty coins in a sieve that sits nicely in a container so I dont have to touch them and stir with a wooden stick. Hope this all helps.
