Maybe it was a fellow detector who stashed it, so they wouldn't have to keep answering it every 5 minutes. Everybody knows how spouses and work can be. God only knows how many times I would like to bury my phone. I'm thinking I would do lead and concrete. All kidding aside chances are it might be on sinister side of something, and if it is be aware that you might be called in for questioning. That's the only way you will know if it was part of a crime. Police generally do not relay info back to citizens on investigations.

Great to have you here Ed, I'm not much of a gold guy being from PA, but I'm sure your knowledge and thoughts will be of great use to the members of DP. Glad you decided to join this great forum. The amount of awesome gold and coin detectors out there are overwhelming at times, but just take your time and make your decision based on the areas/soil, and budget and you will come out on top of a great hobby. Looking forward to your first finds!!!

At it again I see and another good one to boot. I have a local high school nick named the Viking's also, brings back memories. Be careful around the homeless areas. Bashin, Nicks in the goods happen, Don't be to hard on yourself. Like GB and Kac said take your time with your coil to learn the center. Multiple sweeps are in order. When I find my spot I pull a small patch of grass or mark the center of exposed dirt with an impression. I then insert my hand digger about 4 inches off target and lift the soil up slightly, Then I shove in the pin pointer to tell me exactly where my target is. This is by no means fool proof, and takes a little practice . Sometimes with target masking ( multiple targets in one hole ) you will damage the good target and not the bad and vice versa. I can't tell you how many cool things I've ruined. But each time it happens you will remember to slow down and focus on how to remove it without damage. (maybe). I suggest rebury it and find it in 10 years and you can wonder how the nick got there. ( maybe a knife fight ) 😆🤫 All kidding aside It's still a great find no matter what!!!!

You might want to dig all the big signals, and maybe think twice about the location, most depression era people hide stuff in plain sight. I had an Uncle who hid coins in a ice cube tray in the freezer. Try to find out where the person spent the most time, like a basement or flower bed. people always want to make sure that the treasure is safe and be near it. Use the clue that people give you. Without exact knowledge of the location it just might be a family myth. I have found out first hand, how family members think that uncle or aunt so and so buried gold in the yard, most times its wishful thinking. I don't mean to demean your enthusiasm for this but sometimes things that sound to good to be true are just that. Wish you well !!!

Is the battery the same or just the case? if its just the battery assembly and it fits the case housing it should work out. I'm pretty sure the main battery on the MK has to be dead in order for the reserve battery to work.

The gold looks great!!, Two years ago in Kentucky I tripped up on a 54'' Timber rattler crossing a trail. My wife was not happy with me picking it up and moving off the trail. Brings back a bunch of memories of me and my old man catching rattlers, never harmed any and always was amazed at how beautiful of a creature they are. Maybe she was protecting a big old nugget, hope you scanned the area well Ha Ha. Glad to see your out and about creating some good memories.

GB, The fair has been going on since the 1960's and still continues today. I was assuming that this place would have been hunted a lot but turns out maybe never. As for the diamonds I think they are but when my friends jewelry store opens back up I'll have him look at the rings. Coins are 1960 quarter and a bunch 1970's and 1 1984 and 1 2002. I might have to invite a few of you guys out to help me cover this place.( close to 20 acres) The coins averaged about 5'' deep and the rings were about 2'' to 3'' deep. (maybe from last years fair). Raining cats and dogs today and 45 degrees, maybe tomorrow.

The gold ring has a pale red stone, Looks like a cheap ruby to me. The silver is a purple stone kinda nice but could be glass, I'm no stone expert. The Tiffany looks crisp around the gold part. How do they attach two dissimilar metals? And yes my wife performed the mandatory confiscation. She would be at the jewelry store now to get them sized if they were open. It's funny how she wont put the dirty clad in her purse 🤔

Today started out a little slow at an old church ground, after about 7 cents and 1 1/2 hours I packed it in. Not wanting to give up so soon I decided to try a fair ground near an old fire house. I used to go there as a kid. Thinking I would find a ton of trash I put on the 9 inch to help with all the aluminum slaw. While I was trying to remember where the Ferris wheel and tilt-a-whirl where i stumbled onto a dime and penny. Thinking I needed to move up the field 100yds, I Was swinging as I walked not caring to much as this field is big and I was hitting a million signals. Half way I got a strong silver signal and dug a really nice Silver and Amethyst Ring about 2'' deep. After a few clad and an 1 1/2 hours later I got bouncy gold level signal. Normally I would not have dug this, but something just sounded strange and strong. Good thing I did because, It was a 14k and what I believe to be ruby and small diamonds. Thinking this is the best day I've had in years and knowing It was my night to cook dinner, I headed back to the truck swinging wildly and smiling ear to ear. About 75 yards from the truck I got another really strong silver tone. I almost passed out when I popped a silver and gold Tiffany ring. Days like this are very rare for me and the MK has made detecting a lot of fun. Topping this day might take a few years.

Jeff, I suggest picking one mode to start with, the is exception gen mode. I have some pretty goofy soil here in PA and It's full of iron inside the clay. I like 3 tone and don't loose any depth with the disc up to 20. Learn on one mode and then transfer the knowledge to the others after time. One trick that will help you focus in on good targets is flip flopping your tones run your fe tone at 15, your gold/non fe tone at 70 and your non fe tone at 35. This will give you a distinct break in the sounds that will give you another level of discrimination (by ear). Test it in a garden with silver and copper and you will hear a low tone on those targets (it will not sound like iron). Gold and aluminum will have the same high tone. When I hunt in bad soil that is combined with EMI, I lower the volume and work through the chaos. You will find that the MK will give you a very strong sound on a good target even though the machine is going crazy. At this point do not watch the ID's let your ears tell you what it is. Thats where the tone flip comes in. Also when it rains like crazy here I run beach mode to take care of the wet mineralized ground and it works quite well. Running 85 gain will take some of your problems away and once you get a faint target, bump up to 95 and play with the target to get a better idea on what it is. Here's a good starting set up 3 tone, Gain - 85 Disc - 08 Notch - 01 Fe. vol. - N2 Tone break 04 - 70 Tone - 15 - 70 - 35 isat - 02 When you change settings do it one at a time to see what it does to your machine in your soil and record all the info. Once you master one mode you will have mastered them all, other modes just require small setting changes. And there is nothing wrong with 14khz

I agree with you for the most part but that would be for shallow targets. Deeper targets pose a slightly different challenge depending on the the soil conditions and rock. I can't tell you how many times I dug faint crappy sounds and pulled up silver. On the other hand I've had some great sounds and dug 14'' only to find a bobby pin under two brick sized rocks. In all honesty I pass on a lot of targets, but if I return to the area with a different coil or machine I always end up finding something good with a different setup. No matter how good we think we are at discriminating out the junk with our ears, we always end up regretting not digging. So I say dig all iffy targets (could mean the difference in bringing home something really good)

I'm no PI guy, But Chase and Paris are correct on all accounts. If I were to pick one I would go with the GPX 4500 for a multi-purpose PI
