  1. Sunday usually is a day for yard work and other stuff before going back to the grind of work. I woke up early at 3:45 am and planned my day. Mowing, garage cleaning and a trip to Lowes. By 1:30 pm I was done my list and felt the urge to hit my go to hunted out spot, which still keeps on giving. My goal/plan was to dig as many gold signals as possible but still dig any other good target along the way. So I told the wife I was headed out to do a couple of hours. I decided to hunt a tiny baseball field for kids that really only produced clad and a few rings over the years. . Yup clad again but around 2:00 I got a nice solid silver tone, Not positive it was silver because I was running the 800 in 40 Khz and have been just getting the hang of some of the tone and number nuances. Digging commenced and out popped a cheesy 1980's silver/turquoise ring, I'll take it. A few more swings and out came a Kennedy 1/2 dollar. Its the first in quite a while. More foil, more foil and no gold later I abandoned the ball field to hunt near the early house on the property. More clad, more foil, No gold and time closing in on my couple hour hunt. At this point I decided to swing along the flagstone walk from the house to the large driveway. I've hit this at least 4 times in the past. I got to the very end and hit on an odd 20-23 tone that was kinda shallow. Expecting a crap penny I was surprised to see a copper ring and an old one at that. I decided to call it a day at that point and not get too greedy and save a few targets for another day.
  2. That's a pretty good find you got Erik. I'm always interested in oddball coins that show up in certain places. Best I can do here in PA is trip over a Canadian coin, which doesn't happen very often. Glad you posted that for the members. Next time out I'll dig all the 13-14's hoping for an East African Shilling Ha Ha. Best of luck next run around!!!
  3. Damn Strick, NOW your pushing me to get a CTX!!! Been contemplating one of those for quite a while. How bad is it to swing one for 2-3 hours? MAN I'm going down another rabbit hole!!!
  4. almost forgot!!! CH stands for Charlie Horse, That's what you get when you sit down after a long day detecting.
  5. Rock nice on the collection!!! Screwing off while not at work is one of my favorite things to do. I'm thinking you will most likely find gold there, just a matter of time. Don't be shy to the shade tree area's, too. They also produce from people who are not sun worshipers. Sometimes the odd spots produce the most finds. Great post!!!!
  6. That's awesome Strick. I think the initials KP stand for Ka- Pow. Nicely done my friend!!!!
  7. Great job Doc, Stone looks like amethyst to me. I'd be checking the yard again Ha Ha. Thanks for posting!!!!
  8. At this point in time, I'm really liking the single freqs. IMO the multi just doesn't work as well as the single's. Right now I've playing with the 40khz and liking it. EMI pretty much is gone so that makes me very happy.
  9. I generally just rinse them in water and that's it. I've found quite a few valuable silver coins and was told by a serious coin collector that you should not clean with anything other than distilled water. Once reasonably clean you need to have it looked at and cleaned further by a professional if they deem it necessary. You can loose 50% or more of a coins value by chemically cleaning it. It might look good to you but a collector will be horrified. Remember there is a grading system for a reason.
  10. Hey Strick, I learned a while back don't even try to clean them with anything but a dull toothpick. You add water and the coin is even worse than when you started. Mainly I just toothbrush most of the dirt off right out of the ground, Then later when its dry I buff it on my pant leg. You also can rub a little mineral oil on it and buff it on your pant leg again. If it was a coin that's worth a bunch of money and its in pretty good shape I would pay a pro coin person to clean it.
  11. Around my area people dumped coal ash everywhere in their yards. My guess it is sulfur related from the ash. Sadly most of the coins I dig at this place look bad. Only two coins from here looked 1/2 decent. I'll probable remember it for the day off Ha Ha, Very rare I take days off. I love colonial coins and for the most part I remember where each one came from. I have not found one in a while, so its good to know that there are a few still buried.
  12. I decided to take yesterday off to get some things done. My main goal was to head to Lancaster to pick up some cabbage for homemade Sauerkraut. Bob texted me a photo of his Rosie so I gave him a call to congratulate him on his find. I wasn't planning on detecting, but now I had some motivation to head out for a couple of hours. Where to I thought. I was home and didn't feel like driving too far, so I decided to hit my spot across the street. Still experimenting with single freq's I thought it might be a good idea to run 40 for some gold targets. The first hour was foil some clad and crap. The second hour was way better. Deciding to move closer to the house I got a fringe tone that sounded to good to pass up. At the 10'' mark I almost filled the hole back in. Glad I didn't because at 12'' I hit the seam of a really nice crotal bell. Ten minutes later I got one way copper tone that rang up 20-21 which turned out odd for the coin that was in the hole. It was another deep target, and at 10'' I saw the edge of a large copper coin. At first I thought it was your typical Matron head large cent. As it turns out it was a Draped Bust, sadly no date was visible. On to more foil products. No good targets were showing up and I decided to pack it in. I was just about back to the truck swinging as I was walking. BOOM I got a good silver tone. At 6'' I pulled out a silver spoon ring. I could just make out ST on the cut end of the ring, so it's not plated. Overall my day was pretty awesome. My friends did well on their digs and I found some good stuff, AND I got cabbage!!!
  13. Just so you know, Joo Joo is a much higher rating on the JuJu scale. Being that you are 3 hours from me I had no choice but to throw the more powerful form towards you. You did say you were leaving the RV at the camp ground and were going home (remember). Oh and you owe me $60 for diesel fuel, the rosie is on the house.
  14. I've hunted a very similar parking lot, It has yielded a TON of silver coins for me, But also a crap ton of aluminium and zincoln's. I think you'll do well and wish you luck!!!!
  15. Thank god you finally found one!!! I've been pushing the Rosie joo joo your way for a while. It always feels really good to conquer a coin on your list. No matter what it is. Great job!!!!! There is more headed your way.
  16. Nice job Ken, You always manage to wrestle out an odd find and that's pretty cool. Could be a cane handle or a carved petrified pickle Ha Ha. Whatever it turns out to be it's, something interesting for sure. Pretty sure you'll have an answer soon.
  17. I'll sell you the matching ring Ha Ha, Really nice job with retrieving the second one. cool story.
  18. I have to agree with Bob/350, Your location is really important. Having hunted first hand with Bob and the D2, I would have to say other than the weight of the detector the 600/800 will hold its own on the beach with the D2. I would say the 800 is the way to go. It has a few coil options and has a pretty good track record. Also I believe Minelab is offering a discount on those machines. Your observations of battery and coil charging would be a concern of mine also, BUT XP does have a huge range of consumer available parts for there machines. Look do not go down the rabbit hole of best, because there is just no such detector made. Here is my two cents, If I wanted one of your choices I would pick the 800. Not saying the D2 is bad but for the extra money you do not get that much more in performance. As for the Manticore it's a complete unknown, I wouldn't risk it. Not to discourage, but you need to learn a few or at least one middle of the road detector (money wise). Remember that new, shiny and expensive do not equate to finding stuff. I run older detectors that hold up well against more current machines, including the 800. Is that a fluke? No. It's a learn from learning mentality. You can have the best machine (whatever that might be) and be in a spot that has no good targets, will it make you find more? No. I would suggest you take a step back and evaluate your area, ground and your available time to detect. These are the ways you should choose a detector. Remember in 5 years all the detectors you mentioned will be old school and not new, shiny and the best. Ultimately it's your choice and your money, when it comes down to brass tacks the 800 is solid. It's just an uncomplicated versatile machine and will find a lot of stuff in MOST areas.
  19. Hey I lost $50 over at pier beach while I was handing my wife the rest of my wallet. I was over by the volley ball courts. The wind must have blown it right at you. Really would like it back, She has a bad Amazon habit!!!!
  20. Fantastic find troy!!! That's definitely one of the cleanest (dug) seated quarter's I've ever seen. The dime you got is pretty awesome too. I've found some good coins in strange places over the years and will always wonder how they got there. Great Job!!! Couple of cool facts of 1838 The telegraph machine was unveiled in New Jersey US Mint in New Orleans started dime production Paul Mauser, famous weapons designer was born June 27th William Clark of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition passed away on September 1st.
  21. Nicely done Bob, Love the little owl. It reminds me of the owl in the movie Clash of the Titans. I believe the owls name was Bubo or something like that. Ken does make some really durable tools that work really well. I know you have been on a tear with the costume jewelry but I smell gold in your future. Keep at it, That was a great post.
  22. This paragraph sums it up really well. Stick to a plan when digging and you'll see your gold count increase. The key that Skate has stated is knowing your tones and RANGES. That's where testing comes in. Sometimes it's about retraining yourself than learning a new machine.
  23. Owning the 800, Kruzer and a few Tesoro's. I would have to say that multi freq. machines have an advantage at the beach for sure, But single freq. machines will hold their own or surpass the multi's in dirt, in my opinion. One of the main reasons I purchased the 800 was because it was waterproof and also fairly lite. Most of the time I'm running single freq. on the 800 and I'm finding more stuff. You do not have to spend a lot of money for a great machine. Single freq. machines have been killing it for a long time and will continue to do so. At this moment in time I doubt I would ever purchase another multi. I find in running multi they bias towards iron even with it turned off. My 800 will favor iron over a silver target 1 inch away and my Tesoros will disc the iron out. But if you mostly beach hunt I would say go multi. The Vanquish is a great lower priced unit with coil options. Look at your skill level, Your wallet, and the type of detecting you like to do. There are tons of great machines that are not multi that will put a big smile on your face every time you take it out. I've said it once and I'll say it again. Just because it's new, shiny and just on the market doesn't make it the best. 99% of all my best finds were with single freq. machines and I expect that to be true in the future. Good luck navigating all the peer pressure, It can be horrible at times. Please feel free to ask more questions about any detector choice you have. Thanks for posting!!!!
  24. Nice job CPT, Now do that a few more times and log your numbers and target depth for that set up. It can be a big pain in the arse to do so but it will give you a lot of valuable info. Also air test on your driveway and run different programs. This will show you what will give you the best depth on certain targets. Test, test and more tests are the way to go. Most guys are surprised at what gold rings up as. Try all gold from thin to thick if you can, 10k to 24k. You will be amazed by the numbers that show up. Also you will find most pull tabs will not be in the gold range and you wont have to dig a lot of those. FOIL is the bastard child, if your after gold you will be drowning in foil. But you will eventually find the gold. Once you find a program you like, try it and compare dirt depths to the air test heights. Every machine has it own differences even another of the exact same model. Once you gain the confidence you will know exactly whats under your coil (kinda)
  25. Well maybe they can just slide you a couple of ducks, Get up at 8:00 am, Pour yourself a big fat mug of coffee and prep them for the feast. Might I suggest wrapped in BACON, Slow cooked with a Maple, Chipotle and Bourbon sauce. Now that is some good eats.
