  1. I tie a piece of type 3 nylon (550 cord) to my magnets and dip them in tool dip to keep them from chipping. If you do this pour the tool dip into a plastic cup because it will stick to the can!
  2. In the lower 48 I have been wearing Merrill moabs. I don't get down here to much. In AK I wear lacrosse rubber boots for everything from detecting to hunting all year. I use an app called Trimble on my iphone for a GPS. I also use the app when hunting.
  3. I recieved an early Christmas present from my sister. It's called a Burpee pick by Estwing. It was supposed to have magnets in the head but this one didn't. My sister contacted the seller and they are sending another one. I took it out yesterday and it worked great but no gold. Either way I was happy to get some detecting in while down in the lower 48. Merry Christmas everyone
  4. At the end of May I got out for what has become an annual trip. It has been getting harder to get out and dredge with my 6" so now it has become about once a year during summer leave. I also purchased a SDC this last winter. It's hard to detect in AK in the winter so it would really be the first time out with it. My plan was to detect for the first few days and then dredge. I headed north to where I had found nuggets before. After a long trip and some rest I hit creek. The SDC sounds almost exactly like the GP extreme to me. As soon as I got going I got a good signal and dug a nugget. I thought lucky, so after detecting all around the immediate area with nothing else I moved down about 20 feet into a hole that someone had dug and got another signal which turned out to be another nugget. Now I was getting excited. I few minutes later and only two feet away I got another signal which also was a nugget. By this point I was supper excited. The detector kept chattering over the pile so I panned it and the small piece was in there. Over the next day I raked and gridded the whole area with nothing. Through the whole time I only dug 5 pieces of trash. With no more gold I headed out for the dredging grounds which is a whole other story. The bottom picture is the hole where the nuggets came from.
  5. I know this is an older thread but summer is here in AK and I have been doing some detecting. The reebok boots are metal free and as per my previous post they have taken a beating. I am still wearing them.
  6. Congrats that's a nice piece. The rounded to semi rounded chunks of gold with quartz are my favorite
  7. I have used the Extreme since 2003. Only this last winter did I buy a SDC. Below are the pictures of two nuggets (a nugget and a big flake) I found with the extreme using a platypus coil tek double d in 2007 in the chicken area. The first one weighed 2 grams at about 5 inches. I went real slow over the area and found the second one which weighed in at .2 grams at probably not more than an inch and a half. The signal was faint and almost quit looking for it.
  8. Spencer are you able to get out into the area already? When I lived there mid May was usually the first time you could drive off of the graded roads. Beat up are you planning on taking the 7000s there?

  10. I grew up in Green River and spent a lot time up in South Pass. Last time I was there prospecting there was a lot of claims everywhere and the state has a lot of land closed to prospecting. The ground is real hot because most of the belt is metamorphic basalt. I knew some guys that had SD series detectors when they first came out and they did real well. There was a club the WPAA that had some decent claims.
  11. I am in the army as an Infantryman and have been wearing a pair of reebok boots for two years now. They have taken a beeting but are still holding up. Not sure if they are metal free but I will check
  12. The trommel looks pretty high quality. Two winters ago I experimented with HEDP by building a highbanker for fine gold. I tried to keep most of it built out of continuous pieces. There is defiantly some stuff I would do differently. Looks like we used the same matting
  13. I have read a lot about the subject. It is very apparent as Steve said around the Anchorage area. I have claims on the Willow side of hatchers pass and you can see all kinds of glacial features. You can see where as the glaciers retreated they paused for some time to build up intermediate moraines. The earth does warm up and cool down but I am not getting into the debate. Back home in wyoming most of the lakes on the south side of the Wind River mountains are morainal lakes Any way I read mid west prospecting and though it was a interesting and great book.
  14. Here is my prospecting ride and daily driver. I needed a way to move all of the dredging equipment and I know other dredgers with flat beds. I love it but probably not ideal for detecting. Last year a friend modified a trailer for my 6 inch do it could be put directly on the back and towed behind a four wheeler. Here is a photo before all of the other equipment is loaded.
  15. I am going to try this out once I get back up to AK. I don't know if the bungee is going to be strong enough. I plan on girth hitching a piece of nylong webbing with a d ring attached to connect it to the detector. I like the bungee that AMDS had that snapped the shaft and adjusted quickly,so I hope that this is like that one
  16. I haven't even turned mine on yet. I am out of state, so I will check it out when I get back. I wouldn't know the difference but my GP seems to warble but as others have said I just made sure the target would repeat itself before digging. I am going to try the SDC out this spring but It sounds like I may have to get a booster later on.
  17. Hello, I am new to the forum but not new to prospecting and mining. I was a member on the AMDS forum for a long time where I learned a lot. I got busy at work, lost track of it and eventually found out the forum closed. I live in AK and have prospected a lot of places around the state. I have used a GP extreme for years and recently purchased a SDC 2300. Looking forward to getting out with it!!
