  1. The Oc49ers, Taft and another of my clubs..the Antelope Valley Treasure Club are all having outings in October..just in time for cooler weather..hopefully! You should be able to look all of them up online...Even Pat Keene has a group about that time of year. I have already invited some people out to Rocky Road as my guests like I did last year. RR is on the North side of the El Paso's (Burro Schmidt tunnel side). my club..one of 3 has a 160 acre claim on that side by the 'old post office'. This area has been prospected since BEFORE the turn of the century so you are detecting/dry washing tailings essentially. But we still to this day find gold...the earliest miners were not efficient at all and later prospectors of course missed gold and were not that efficient either. There is still a lot of time to contact these clubs ...they are always looking for new members. They may or may not want you to join before prospecting on their claims...they will let you know. If you are interested in coming to the AV Chili Cookout and campout PM me and I can give you detailed directions etc. This outing is on Oct 13,14 &15 and is just what it sounds like a chili competition and then dinner with everyone either cooking chili or bringing a food dish or both. If you decide to come to this area then or on your own later I advise stopping at the BLM office at the junction of the 14 fwy and Garlock Rd to get a trail map for only a few $...they are very helpful and have lots of "must see" points of interest such as the Burro Schmidt (sp?) tunnel, the Talcum mines, Bickel Camp, petroglyphs, the Rock House, the old post office etc.etc. Both nuggets found near a OC49er claim in Garlock side of El Paso's
  2. Did NOT get a report back..so it looks like "I have to put my money where mu mouth is" and go out for at least 1 day myself! Truck goes in for brakes tomorrow and then I will go.
  3. Paradiceau...my bad!!! Meant to say the East of Red Chispa. Waiting for a report this morning on conditions out there1
  4. Yes..exactly right..just to the West of Red Chispa! A forum member is going out Sat and I am going to get a report and hopefully some pics. Having work done on my truck so I can do some "day tripping" real early...too hot to stay for multiple days.
  5. Got an invite to go out to the El Paso's as soon as it stops raining after this tropical storm ...really a "dying hurricane" passes. Our local SoCal news is constantly harping on this anomaly that has only occurred several times on the West Coast. Really "making hay" trying to play up and scare people...showing people filling sandbags , stocking up at the grocery store etc... It's laughable! Yes we will get tons of rain but the winds will die down to a strong breeze! Anyway after the rains earlier in the spring the roads out there at Taft, Red Chispa, OC 49er claims were torn to "hell"..some completely obliterated. Gold was exposed in the trails that were undercut by several feet. Ken (last name STILL not mentioned) spent three whole long days detecting just one trail and got 16 nuggets with his 6000, many so small they won't move the most sensitive scale! But, that's Ken..he gets off on being thorough...so he can say "there is no more gold there"! Funny cause after that I went there with my new Garrett Axiom and found a nice size nugget within 10 minutes with the Mono coil! Ha..was he surprised! Anyway, I get tired of reading about past glories on this website and had vowed to myself that I would go back out and try the DD coil on the Axiom if the weather cooled off even a little. But 'boy-oh-boy'......I can imagine the muddy swamp waiting out there just after 8 inches or more of rain...without letting it dry out for awhile. I have some responsibilities at home that would nag at me the whole time I would be out there which would diminish my enjoyment. So, I SHOULD pass on this invitation for awhile even though it would give lots of satisfaction to post pictures of 16 or so nuggets or so. Ken...you're a go getter....maybe you will beat us all out there again?
  6. Did you come away with any gold?
  7. Mitch...name of club and location(general..not specific) of club claims. I posted a few weeks ago that Ken found 16 nuggets over 3 days on a Taft claim...I came along with my new unused Garrett Axiom and found a nice size nugget he missed.
  8. Just took the Axiom out last weekend for the 1st time due to weather 1st then 2 medical issues next. I am interested also but I am NOT a good source of info for that due to lack of experience with the Axiom. In my other post (rough roads due to rain) I mentioned that a 6000 user had found 16 nuggets over 3 days in the same "undercut" road. So Ken..last name NOT mentioned, please respond to this topic so we can ALL get a better idea of capabilities of the 2 machines. Did you find ALL of the nuggets with your 6000 or did you get "help" with a Gold Big or some such also? You found some nuggets SO SMALL they would give my EQ800 a 'run- for-it's'-money'! When I took instruction with Gerry at his class at Rye Patch with the EQ800 we had a contest to see who could find the smallest nugget and wow can the EQ find small stuff! Ken's nuggets rivaled those small nuggets...if in fact he found them all with his 6000 and did NOT also use another detector like a VLF . So Ken, please chime in on how you managed to do so well with your 6000 and some "tips" . Myself...I need some help as I am sure I must be running sensitivity too high on the Axiom and am NOT getting the most out of it although I DID find a nice size nugget fairly deep that Ken missed. A pat on the back for me!
  9. Gerry..I deliberately did NOT take my EQ800 with me on this trip so as to force myself to only rely on the Axiom and not fall back on the EQ that I know so well. I think that was a mistake! I will have to look online for some videos on the Axiom as I think I was running the sensitivity way too high and after digging I would uncover "hot rocks". Do any Axiom owners have experience with hot rocks and the Axiom? Some areas were somewhat free of hot rocks and some areas I would have used the EQ..had I brought it with me. Dumb idea to not take it also! Due to medical issues this was my 1st time out with the Axiom. Pic is EQ find.
  10. A Gpx 6000 user spent 3 days prospecting this cut on the Taft claim near Red Chiapas coming away with 16 nuggets. I came along after with my Garrett Axiom and found a nice nugget he missed!
  11. Most roads in Goler Gulch are like this or worse, which makes dodging the gullies challenging.
  12. GS..what part of the country did you find it? I'm always curious.
  13. Yea...from everything I have read I have been talked OUT of the 6000 and into the Garret.
  14. Another time then! I am showing the Nevada resident around both sides of the El Paso and he is letting me use his 6000 while he uses another detector and we will split the finds. Then at some point when I FINALLY get the new Garrett he will show me around Gold Basin. That's what I call teamwork!
  15. For those of you who live in Ca (& elsewhere) if you would like to be "my guest" at our 160 acre claim in the vicinity of the Schmidt Burro tunnel(sp?) side of the El Paso mountains the weekend of Oct 7,8 & 9 PM me back. I know it's short notice but thought I'd throw it out there. When I was 1st starting prospecting I could have used some "local knowledge" to get tips on dry washing & detecting for gold. I have one 6000 owner coming from Nevada to try his luck on the claim I found 2 nice nuggets so I thought what the heck I'll just invite some others such as Gold Catcher, GotAU and others who have PM'd me. You know who you are. I had hoped to have the new Garrett by now to go over the claim where I found the 2 nuggets but who knows when that will happen!!! I'm hearing December now...GREAT!! Thx Garrett..just in time for winter! One DP member offered to let me use his 6000 while he uses his 7000 and we split the finds. That works for me! All others of you...I doubt you have a 6 or 7 both, so until I FINALLY get my Garrett and go over the claim myself you won't get that same deal. What you will get is access to the AV claim as well as me showing you the Red Chispa and Taft side of the mountains. The Nevada guy and I are moving over there after Oct9. Gold Catcher did a nice write up with pics of the El Paso mountains quite awhile ago but he left out many areas of interest. I suggest to all of you who come either this weekend on on your own sometime to 1st stop and get an area map from the BLM on Hwy 14 (right at the Garlock junction ) which shows many points of interest. Such as the old Talc mines, the "Rock House", Schmidt Burro tunnel etc. etc. PS: An honest to goodness off road vehicle is necessary to see some things...a 4 wheel drive truck won't make it!
  16. If a person wants to mine where is no water ..what then? I have seen “dry trommels in Australia but not in US. I know 2 guys who have mined dry for at least 5 years using medium excavator and their own made “puffers”. These guy’s are mechanical gurus.. the puffer is over 6 feet high with 3 puffers on a towable platform. They trickle dirt run thru a grizzly with a loader and take their “tailings” home to process. I figure a “ dry” tromel” would allow way way more yardage than what they R doing. Thoughts?
  17. Gerry...any indication when the Axiom will be available to all of us on "the list"? Trying to make plans for the Fall in state and out of state!
  18. Gerry...is this gold from the guy who showed up at your June 2021 class at Rye Patch who was a former student?
  19. Ok Gerry...we all R waiting patiently for more info. In my case I want to know 4 things, (1)how does it perform in hot rock/trashy areas with DD coil. (2) How does it compare with the ML6000?.(3) how do the mono coils perform. What is the price with military discount if available? Thx
  20. P..as usual, you get right to the salient points and have a reasoned argument. Yes the 5000 frustrated the heck out of me (even running a DD coil) or a little Sadie. I think at my advanced age (read patience..NOT) the 6000 would be perfect but NOT HERE as you point out in this "junky" area. As I was in training last year, June, at Rye Patch (when the 1st 6's came out the same weekend I was there for my EQ800) I watched the 6000 pop nuggets out at a 'decent' depth my Eq didn't pick up! Heck..there were 2 7000's there that were even finding "small" size nuggets. So you are right in saying that Minelab has me 'over a barrel'. As you and most everyone has said that it is good to have a PI and VLF. I have a decent VLF. Wish that 8000 was coming out sooner than later! Thx for the input! PS: I have more than a few offers from 6 owners who have had some time to get proficient with their machines and at some point this year I am going to invite one or more of them to detect the area...mostly the slopes/sides of the wash. What 'Jasong' and others don't know but I DO know is that this "small" area has produced 3 to 4 1 ounce or bigger nuggets that have been documented as well as smaller. So I really would like to see a 6 or 7 detect the sides.
  21. GotAU... I may break down and get the 6000 by fall. Money isn't the main issue..the main issue is spending 30 to 60 days away from home! As they say, "Happy wife..happy life"! I won't get it UNLESS I can devote this minimum amount of time prospecting in "milder" ground. As all of you who prospect in the El Paso's know, in addition to trash/bullets etc the ground is saturated with hot rocks. The EQ does a fairly decent job of canceling those out where a PI wouldn't (I know you are going to say just run a PI with a DD coil)... but the EQ is all I have...so far. So, is it "Nevada ,Az here I come" or "yes Dear I'll get the car out to take you shopping"! The wife doesn't read this website! Too much...I'd get a "wry face smile" and a "look' if she does read this one! Ha!
