  1. I hit the creek again and it turns out the spots where I am getting signals aren't in the shale. It's a harder black or dark gray stone. When I pursued one of the signals wit miy hammer and chisel I opened up a pocket that had a bunch of rust in it. The target was found with my GPX.

Sorry about the confusion with the shale. That's where I thought it had been. Thanks for all the comments.

  2. I have been working a creek and have done fairly well. There have been at least 3 spots where there seem so be a strong signal in the bedrock , which is mostly shale. I keep a rock hammer and chisel in my bag and have tried to dig some out. I feel like it's just a particularly hot spot of ground, but I dont know that it is, they seem vary localized. Any thoughts?

On the plus side digging it all can pay off in many ways, the amount of times I've dug a bit of junk or a hot rock and rechecked the hole and found gold... 🙂

This happened to me the other day. I hit a big signal with the GPX4500 and under it was the small bit in my other thread. Wouldn't have found it without the bullet. Not exactly the same but similar. Thanks I will look over The guides again.

  4. Thats a good idea, I get some flags or something. The last few days out have been awesome but I feel like I am missing lots of gold. Time to slow down and hit it hard. I'm thinking about getting one of the new evo or elite coils for my 4500. I like the looks of the 12x8 evo. I cracked my advantage coil the other day. I mostly hit creeks in my area. Its hard to stomach the price I dont know if its worth it for me yet. Thanks for the advise.

  5. Thanks for the advise I have the coiltek 5x10 and it does much better on small gold. In the pictures above I found the top 3 nuggets with the nugget finder advantage 14" and the bottom picture was with the coiltek 5x10 same area and about the same amount of different ground covered. I working a creek that I dont think has been hit before long hike in and steep canyon. Takes me 2 or 3 days to recover before I go back. Next time I am going to try my 11dd stock coil one way and then switch to the 5x10 on the way back and cover the same ground to see what happens. I will be covering mostly ground that I hit with the advantage coil.

  6. Thanks, I also love the monster. I have done fairly well with it.  I will try the manual 10 idea.

I have used at GM2, vsat, gmt, Infinium, xterra 705 and GB pro. Now my current lineup GM1000 and GPX 4500 have found more gold than all those before. I turned my GB pro into a pinpointed sort of thing for when I am using the GPX. Not sure how this will turn out but fun anyway.

  7. I was testing my 4500 today on a 2 gram nugget at 7"-8" and a 1 gram at 6"-7". I was able to hear the 2 gram with the gpx with all my coils 6x10 coiltec 14"x9" advantage and 11" dd commander. None of them could hear the 1 gram. Possibly a faint signal with the 6x10 coil. Does this sound about right?

The soil is not too mineralized I was able to run the dd at 13 with no ground noise and the monos at 11 or 12.

Also I have been detecting a new area lately and have found 9 nuggets from .6g to 2g. Picture below. The smallest was hiding under a bullet so doesn't count as a gpx find. Using the gpx. All of them were within 4"-5" from the coil in bedrock areas. I know there must be some under the areas of shallow gravel but I can't seem to find any there.  I'm getting ground noise and false signals only.

    Thanks

  8. I have a GM1000 which I have found some gold with. I have been fairly happy with it until today. I was out testing some buried targets with my GPX 4500. The GPX is still new to me and I am trying to figure out the settings. Anyway I decided to run the GM over the targets. A 2 gram nugget at about 8" and a 1 gram nugget at about 8". The GM could see the 2 gram fairly easily but it was a strong iron signal. It couldn't see the 1 gram. I can run the detector on auto plus with only minimal falsing in this ground. I dug the nuggets up and checked them. In air good non iron signals all the way through the detection range. Then I put a chunk of dirt about 2" thick on them. Now I was getting solid iron signals. No noticable loss of depth but all iron. Just for f uh n I pulled out my gold bug pro. About the same depth as the GM but when it gave an I'd it was a gold ID never an iron ID fe bars were indicating 2 max. The GM gave an ID further out than the GB but it was an iron signal. The GB didn't give an ID until much closer but when it did it said gold.

With the gold monster I wouldn't have dug those targets with the Gold Bug I would have. I know I should dig all targets in gold areas but part of the reason to have a VLF gold detector is to weed out at least some of the junk.

    Any thoughts?

I have a question about the gpx in a seperate thread. Thanks

  9. phone was off last time I was having issues. I normally run the gain between 8 and 10. Would a bad coil still make noise standing still. Also what would I lose in depth and sensitivity running the DD vs the 14" mono. I know the 10x5 mono will be more sensitive to smaller gold. I found a .25 gram nugget with it the other day. I have only really been using the 10x5. So far I have a about 14 grams found with it. I would like to get more depth in the area I am working. Thanks for the advise

  10. I recently bought a GPX 4500. It came with 3 coils, 14" oval nugget finder advantage, 10x5 coiltek and stock 11" DD round.  I want to be able to run the 14" mono but cant get the detector to quiet down. Lots of EMI noise. At least I think that's what it is. Even when I am out in the boonies. No cell signal and now power lines anywhere it is still noise. The 10x5 coil works better but still has occasional warbles even when holding still.  The DD seems to be quietest. Normal Settings: Factory for the most part. Enhance, fixed, general, mono. Is there a process that I should follow to quiet the detector? I am a bit worried that the 14" coil might be bad because it is so noisy. I am doing auto tune and ground balance. I have already found some nice gold with the detector using the 5x10 coil but feel that I am missing some of the signals because I cant quiet the detector. Thanks

This is completely normal for the Gold Monster, and even the Equinox with the gain too high.  If you're in the Auto modes it's less likely to happen as it adjusts the sensitivity so the machine is handing the ground well, if it handles the ground well it doesn't have bump sensitivity.  If you're well ground balanced it's far less likely to happen too so make sure you pump the coil until it goes quiet.

The GM is a very sensitive machine, the slightest movement of the coil cable causes it to go off too so make sure you strap your cable to the shaft, for some stupid reason ML don't include a strap with the GM, that's just weird.

If you want to run in manual 10 you'll have to have either mild soil or good coil control, otherwise leave it in Auto or Auto+ or run in a manual mode that gives you minimal bump sensitivity.

Thats what I figured, I havent had much time on the machine and its the most sensitive detector I have ever owned.  Thanks

  12. I just picked up my Gold Monster 1000. The first one had a low volume issue and was replaced by the dealer. The second one appears to suffer from bump falsing. This may be due to lack of experience with the machine. I used it for the last 2 days and was able to find some really small gold which is awesome. It did a falsed badly with the small coil and some with the large coil during those 2 days.  I tested it when I got home by holding starting it and ground balancing it in a clear location. Using the small coil. It falsed badly in 10 and 9 less in 7 and 8 and barely in 6.  The issue is not as bad with the large coil.  I then held the small coil up in the air and tested for falsing. The issue was still there but 10 was more like the setting of 7 when grounded.  I moved the cable while in the air and there was no falsing. I used my scoop to tap the coil and cable so my hand wouldn't effect the result. I have generally concluded that the issue is due to high sensitivity setting more than coil or software issues.

I would like to verify this by comparing my machine to another.  Some other users could do the same test and see what your results are. This would give us a baseline for what a GM1000 should perform like.

    Test procedure

Turn on and balance on clear ground at setting manual 10 or highest possible manual setting with small coil.

tap coil lightly with scoop or something that wont be detectable.

Reduce sensitivity until falsing is a non issue.

    Record this setting

Then perform same test in the air and record that setting.

    Post results on this thread

My results would be Grounded 6. In the air 9 or possibly 10.

This will obviously vary due to the ground you have and how hard you tap the coil, so the more tests we have the more accurate the data will be. Thanks

  13. I compared the GM1000 to my GBP and the GBP is probably twice as loud. However the GM1000 quietly hit the 45 cal bullet I was testing with 3+ inches more depth in auto 1 and was super stable. The GBP was chattering like crazy maxed out which is normal. I usually run it at about 11 or 12 on the sens knob (40%-50%) just to keep  the threshold stable. Having cut my teeth on a Compadre I really like a single tone silent search detector. I,m going to like the GM1000

  14. I just talked to the dealer and he said bring it back and we will compare it to his and swap it out if its not up to par. Good guy. This is the second detector I have bought from Big Valley Metal detecting in Sacramento and Larry the owner is great.  Buy local and keep the stores in business.

  15. I am mostly a prospector now.  My father is an avid prospector and we did a lot of that when I was growing up. I used his machines a bit when i was young. I started dredging at about 20 then moved from Calaveras county to Fresno and dredging was banned. So i started park and jewelry hunting. I started with a Tesoro compadre and was hooked. I now have 2 modified Compadres, one water proof with 3 disc controls and one with sensitivity, volume, and ground balance on a  straight shaft. I haven't posted much lately, but was a frequent contributor on Findmall and Friendly forums, under the same name. I have a number of videos on my youtube channel Dirtyshopdiy. Which started out as a detecting channel and has evolved a bit now. I currently use the Compadres a gold bug pro and just purchased  a GM1000.

  16. Ok, thanks. I figured it was something like that. Yours is banging loud mine is less than half that. I hope the shop will switch it out for me. Its just a 1.5 hour drive to get there. Its brand new, never seen dirt. I'm surprised it made it out of the factory that way.
