New Age Coils - Raw Performance Or Part Placebo
DDancer replied to AussieMatt's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Appreciate the like on the post I made AusseiMatt however I gotta point out, and Steve remunerated, that its comparing apples to oranges when speaking on differences between different technologies. In point of topic, when comparing various coil designs its only fair to equate them to the machines that are using them. The Zed is a fixed coil machine till someone comes up with different configurations *and even then its a different species of machine and thus NOT comparable to any other machine till competitors or new models come on market*. The point of the thread relates to those muti-configuratble devices. IE the coils. Settings are a moot point. I tried to relate that in my simple memories of the 2100e to that of the GP3000. Those and later model's of ML equipment are pretty much fully compatible for coils as accessories across the line. However 4000 models and up are not, according to my reading, DD coil machines and do not benefit greatly by differing coil designs in the DD coil realm. And in some cases the Mono realm. Digitization of many of the parameters for various ML machines since the 3500 have made a muck of things~ my thought~ however advances in detecting ability due to coil change out are really a matter of preview by the user and their settings for their particular machine, terrain and tenacity..- 19 replies

The French Vs The Turks

Chunk light tuna verse's full on Albacore tuna? Problem is which one to put on my salad?.... Interesting. got some dumb questions now but I'll read a bit before I put into the salad. ;) -
Brett I'm not looking to be negative. Honestly. I said it looks like mica *first pictures to be specific* or pyrites *and now a second picture to push that point with me*. Gold does not sit like that in the pan and I can pan mica~ so can anyone else. Pyrites will do the same thing in the pan, and be persistent, however no they don't pan out the same way as gold will. The key are the black sands and other heavies plus where they end up in the pan~ the bottom or at least the majority on the leading edge of the sweep. Even in a dolly your going to have black sands pretty prevalent in the pan. Its a pain to knock them out. Also the way gold lays in the pan when you do the swirl points it out. Black sand, pyrite and mica's follow. Magnets will not pick up pyrites. Try this, looking at your sample in bright light shade it with your hand. Gold stays bright where pyrite dims as you do it. Even specimen gold from raw sources. The pan does not lie and with experience you'll see what others here are seeing. Dont give up just give in and learn. I pointed you back to the other fella and there is no dispute with me he has gold in the pan.

Dude, do well in your own topic. Not seeing anything but mica or maybe pyrite. Gold shows in the bottom like chickenminer demonstrates. Everything in that picture is wrong. Just being truthful. Your original specimen showed no outwards indications of gold~ what I consider ironstone with massive quartz. You dolly'd it. Good. However alot of us have ran such species for naught and that is naught that I can see. Keep at it though. My thoughts.

Considering how many less than robust cattle I've seen out bush chewing black PVC pipe meant for the wells and their water I find that such things are pretty darn trivial. Animals will eat anything and batteries, not surprising. Penguin's eating hairpins and what not :)P well kinda like finding nuggets where there should not be one.... emu's and crows will do the same job. *greedy b*strds* Why do they do it? well it looks good or it tastes good. No doubt about it. Plenty of studies on the subject and in point of fact many manufactures have changed their formula for plastics in particular because of the fact. In many cases its just like fishing... jig a bit of plastic, grass or what not and see the animal, fish, hit.

Pinpoint And Depth: Necessary Or Not?
DDancer replied to californiagold's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Hehh, trying to compare a Zed, or any PI for that matter *disregard to the claim of super VLF*, to a coin hunter is like putting a lion in a shark tank and seeing who wins. There are hybrids in the VLF species that incorporate coin/prospecting abilities. However there is a vast difference in species of machine, VLF verses Zed/PI, and pin pointing is not a characteristic of the Zed/PI species. Nor do I think it'll ever be achievable. One can hope; but honestly in prospecting machines, regardless of species, pin pointing is a pretty moot option. For reasons that Steve has made very well in my opinion. The cost index for the feature is pretty minimal. The cost to the user in added data to dig/not dig can be invaluable. Try using old BFO's for a while :) Make you want an old Bounty hunter in a heart beat. addendum : Pinpointing regardless of the machine is an operator function/skill. Great to have as a noob but seldom used as one gets to know the nature of the beast they are running. -
Pinpoint And Depth: Necessary Or Not?
DDancer replied to californiagold's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Yah know if the information is available, pinpoint and depth *well a general idea of it*, why not integrate it? In the end the user will figure it out for themselves if its something they want to use or will rely on alternate methods. *screwdrivers say ;)* In some machines with certain coils depth and pinpointing are very useful to me and as a user attractive features. To a newbie they are just confusing but to some degree, if they stick with it, these things become the standard for other purchases... ya think? -
New Detectors And Early Adopters
DDancer replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
CAVEAT EMPTOR! If you don't read that and understand then you don't deserve to own anything less than a day old or a hundred years old. Generally speaking its called personal responsibility for yourself and for what you buy into. There is no such thing as snake oil, just the fools who believe in it. -
Ring Tabs, Now 50. Historical Artifacts!
DDancer replied to Sourdough Scott's topic in Metal Detecting For Jewelry
Interesting and informative. Funny how things get enshrined in the archy community. Hehh, just about any experienced MD'er could have pointed out the venerable pull tab and its relation to human inhabitation. Wonder how long it'll be before this little grasping of straws leads to more prohibition for detectorists. -
The Zed always becomes heavy. After watching an SDC clean out 4 grams on a Zed patch I gotta go with it rather than spend the money on a, might be coming out, Zed coil that will probably kill my arm and my desire to dig a target ;) 20 inches... really. Took 3 hours to dig the ouncer at near 3 feet with a little helper...... yep.

Cool horse tack. Have not found any I *infantry* buttons yet but I keep hoping. Always a pleasure to pick up a ring though the loss may be different in the past. Excellent hunt.

Hahh! She's taken for now. Maybe later. ;) Why do you want a bull bar where your at?? No kanga's to bump off, maybe sheep and cows are just... unless your really into bush bashing your way to the gold... then I'd suggest extra tires. Didn't stake any this last year but jacked a few in the last trips to know that extra's are your friend and replacing them is not. Got two, not in sight on the picture, hanging off the back. Diff locks are good. All time 4x4's are fuel hogs but nice in a pinch when its raining and your in a creek and you realllllly dont want to get outta the cab.
-
Camper conversion. Dont make them like that anymore from what I know and they still cost a bundle. Got a rack on the bottom and in the top if needed *used mine to stow bags and such up top but my partner found the cushions to be of value after sleeping on the ground for a while ;) hehh* And there is rust. Expect it for a girl like that but otherwise she's firm. You can look up the rego and see the year make model stuff...

No, stick it in your collection. With all due respect there is no reason to assay that specimen at 200 bucks a pop. Heck even a dolly will be more time than is needed. *shakes head*

I've reckoned they are called troopies because you can about carry a Troop of blokes in the back when outfitted with two benches and no amenities At least I got the kitchen sink. Want to see Auminesweeper's rig. I've shown ya a bit about mine ;) But thats not europe even if both AU and EU have round-a-bouts. Honestly after the 2006 expedition with my old Dat's *Datsun* and my tag along with bags and no vehicle in 2010 with mates I did a major upgrade this last season. Caravan is the bomb but one works with the tools they can. Hilux did not fit the bill and my partners rig was.... well cramped when packed. But he had worse with me alone in 2006 and the dat's.

Looking at an SDC purchase myself next go and if its a go this is a good thread. Thanks. I'd like to know about a recharger thats carport adaptable as well as the heavier, mAh, batteries as well. Heavier batteries or even replacements in WA are hard to find and quite dear on the pocket book for each one.
-
Not seeing it but a word of experience and caution : The 12v lead for the charger is a piece of junk. If you have had a short take a look at where the strain reliefe at the back of the plug for the car port meets the wire. Both my partner and I had a failure at this point because the cheap pvc insulation split there and allowed the wire to short out. This also blows the fuse inside the plug. Its not easily repairable especially out bush. Its also a good spot for the wire to break down internally and lead to poor performance in my opinion. Cold weather makes the pvc brittle and the strain reliefe becomes quite solid and unflexable. I turned mine over to Mat at Finders Keepers in Kal and he's taken the complaint up with ML. Gave my partner a new lead however I had a work around with a carport charger for my Energizer rechargable that worked wonders *heavy lead*. As to the light blinking red or green.... red meant my vehicles deep cycle was low *and the eske was not working... hehh* and blinking green never cause a bit of difference the next day... as long as it was steady green in the morning as it always was. Turning the engine over for a couple of hours every other day helped. Never had any issues with the mains lead for the charger. Both here in the US and AU.

Wear out your Welcome?? Ehh. Gotta take a trip down the middle.... Uluru is on the bucket list of big rocks in hard to reach places I've yet to go.

I guess Quartzite is offcially hunted out now ;) Hahh! Nice work. Love the choya in the background.

Came across Stinky, or Stumpy as some say the shingle back :) Another memory. I've seen them in Victoria and WA.

Hehh, I get around the hot vehicle by working in the winter ;) My little jobber works well enough that I keep my meds in the small cool section and freeze the rest. Practical trick in the event of low power is to put two liters of water in and let'm freeze. Not much room in the Troopy I've got so big units are impractical. Everything else for the tucker box has to be able to stay at camp temp. Shade is a good thing too. Going caravan is the way to go but for me its sleeping in the bunk in back or under the stars. Hahh! Here is a little of my set up. Eske. Bed, back, cabinets, tools *more than shown* and packed for a good time. In kinda that order seems I cant organize the files but you get the idea. (high lift jack got moved to the tool compartment but rides on the front)
