Don't be afraid to sneak that IB to Fe-6 and Recovery 6 to get more sensitivity/stability.

Ah, I have been lately and it does help.  I push up the Fe2 and keep the recovery at 6.  You can even go to 7 and it becomes less chatty.

  2. That is really great stuff.  I'm glad that you do the research and know what you are finding.

Years ago, when looking for gold in remote places I know I found objects that would be clues for the right people who hunt relics, but they didn't mean anything much to me.  I wonder how often a detectorist stumbles across a site without a real clue what they've found?

Was it a mining camp?  A stagecoach camp?  A calvary camp?  A railroad camp?  Hunting camp?  Trading camp?  When you layer over the top of it all the hunting and farming activity over the top you really need to know your history in order to know what you are finding.  Sometimes we don't have a clue!

Some cool looking finds Mitchell - congrats! I've been out the last few nights as well and am feeling it today. I'm hoping that hurricane Kay shakes the local beaches up this week!

I was feeling it last night and couldn't make it out.  It was time to recharge my battery.  One night this week I was out and I killed the 800 battery but that was after 3 sessions.

Honestly, and people may think it's crazy, but if I found a 1 oz piece of gold on their claim I'd donate it to their organization, since they own the claim. I was under the guest pass though, so I suppose that would make me entitled to the find, while remaining in good conscience. In that case I'd probably get a membership. Truly, I would have already gotten a membership, but the process is a bit dated. You have to use actual paper, like the stuff they make out of trees, and send it in the actual physical mail, with this thing called a "check"

I belong to several 'clubs' and many of the members 'guest' people in all the time.  Sometimes they guest in more than they should, but the guests don't know it.  Many people that were previously members of these clubs continue to visit the claims and they could be technically a claim jumper or a member in the arrears.  No one can really enforce the status very good except by frequency.  If you frequent a place where you have questionable status, then someone may track you down.

If you were to find a large nugget on a club claim, then THAT becomes more valuable than the nugget.  Other members and non-members would like to know that gold is still there.  They would go back and/or join to give it a shot.  Sadly, most club claim members keep their finds 'secret' as per some gold finder rules.  Don't tell people where you found it.  It is an aspect of detecting that affects us all.

It's probably a crown from a person who's family spread their loved one's ashes at the lake.

Luke, that is a really cool find.  Congratulations.  I was a Comstock member for a year.  Good club with meetings in Reno.  I saw Chris Ralph speak there.

I've found several crowns at the beaches over the years and even more 'toe tags' so I think you are right about the crown.

My wife and I went to Downieville for a weekend trip a few years back.  We were on and near the river when it was very low.  My wife found a 5 gram button and I found a 11-12 gram nugget covered in mercury.  We threw it into a fire to burn it off before we got much mercury on us.

  6. Last night I got in a 4 hour moon lit beach hunt watching the moon disappear into the clouds, fog and Pacific.  That is reward by itself without finding much valuable jewelry.  This was the 3rd night in a row for me and I'm pretty dialed in right now finding small and deep targets.  One was a tiny computer chip and another was an aluminum can bottom at over 20 inches deep.

I know metal detecting is like riding a bicycle but if you are a mountain biker or a mountain runner you know that more is generally better.

Much of this summer I didn't have a reason to go out more than 3-4 hours a week or less sometimes but now I have been averaging over 20.

How many hours a week do you detect?

I encountered this very same pay layer at my old mine at Moore Creek, where we called it "coffee grounds" due to the color of the generally sandy material. It was a sign of the best and richest material, and looked like the exact same scenario here.

Good work Steve.  You make it look easy.  You need to remind everyone you are an Alaskan Miner.  Your lessons were hard won and not easily transferred to other miners.

I've been to Nome, and it is unfamiliar ground.  You can't just go to any ol working mine and help'em find gold.

I'm glad the Axiom worked as well as it did.  It certainly seems like a new arrow in the quiver for avid prospectors.
