  1. The storms are a few days behind us but there are a few good waves coming in to make some patches. I found one patch today on one of my 'go to' local beaches and got a couple of golds! One has some stones (10k/2g/diamonds) to go with it. The other is a 14k gold earring that is not so rare this year. It is my 2nd one after many years of the similar style being always junk.
  2. Moving away from the subject of why the California government site won't work for you 'outsiders' ... here is a site that should work and tell the story without censorship by our paternal state. Gold Rush: California, Date & Sutter’s Mill - HISTORY - HISTORY
  3. It is a California State Government website. I wonder if your provider doesn't want you to see it. I could make jokes but I'll wonder why it doesn't work until we get you there. https://www.conservation.ca.gov/
  4. It works for me. The Discovery of Gold in California The Discovery of Gold in California by Donald C. Cutter The following historical account of the discovery of gold in California has been slightly amended and updated from the original: Cutter, Donald C., 1948, The Discovery of Gold in California, [in] Geologic Guidebook Along Highway 49 – Sierran Gold Belt – The Mother Lode Country: California Division of Mines Bulletin 141, p.13-17. The original article was written in celebration of The Centennial of the Discovery of Gold in California, 1848 - 1948. The article was well researched and remains a classic account of those early events associated with the gold discovery and mining in California.
  5. Gold was discovered before January 24, 1848 in California but it was James Marshall who started the Gold Rush! The Discovery of Gold in California
  6. Just like gold hunting, sometimes you have to walk away and let the detector balance out again and then go back to your pile/hole for a new look. I'll have to admit tho ... I've lost a few targets completely and in the interest of time I move on.
  7. Just like 'your' news here is some info about our weather! California storms not likely caused by climate change - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
  8. Brag a little bit more. I love the sight of bling early in the morning! WTG
  9. If you can't show it at the beach, where are you going to SHOW IT? A good looking body needs some sparkle.
  10. Well done. I'm thankful that you and Seeker didn't get it all! haha
  11. I just looked at the picture again. It is from 2014! That is hardly up to date as far as the 'story' is concerned.
  12. Here is an article with a few pictures of metal detecting in Africa. You dig a hole and detect the contents. Does anyone know the metal detector used in the picture? It doesn't look like a Minelab. Illicit Flows to the UAE Take the Shine off African Gold - MERIP
  13. I went back today and found a deep 'sink' with lots of big, old fishing weights. No gold today but there were 4 silver rings and one stainless steel. Total rings for the day was 6. I'll just refer to yesterday's gold as floater gold that was in the waves because it was so light. My wife said it would all be gone today and she was right. If I could have stayed longer yesterday I would.
  14. That was a dry sand find on the way out to the beach. I don't know much about it. I'll have to look it up.

  16. Today I went to good beach and a not so good beach! It is easy to know the difference between them. I can put some of my excuses away for a while. haha The trash to rings ratio was one of the best I've ever had. I was hoping to have the full day rather than just 2.5 hours but that didn't happen. I'm quite pleased with it anyway because it was not my intended beach. I had to get gas and that determined the new direction I had to go with limited time. Here is the not so good beach that I spent more time at than the good beach. (I don't think it will be that way tomorrow!) The 4 gold rings include a rare gold earring. The total weight is not too great but it was so much better than any of my previous hunts on the gold count. On my way out of the beach I ran into a forum member, Slim. I showed him what I found and I hope he was able to get some goodies of his own.
  17. The beaches I know best didn't give up the goods. I've since spread my efforts but haven't found the gold patches. Some of the goodies are only given up with lengthy sessions and that is difficult for me with a couple of kids and one in school drop off and pickup. I still feel like I should have done better and when you feel like that it can be less fun and less productive so just swinging is a reward by itself.
  18. I haven't related this to water as much as the 'sides' of the hole seem to defeat the target. It has become rather annoying actually and I was hoping the Mcore would not be susceptible to this quirk. It is interesting to contemplate that a Minelab is more prone to this type of behavior than other VLFs. Something in their signal sauce that gets neutralized?
  19. This was my situation today and more often than I care to recall lately with my 800. You dig and poof. You have to circle the hole to make sure you didn't get it out and shake it out of the scoop. I was wondering if this happened with the Mcore but you already said that it does. Thanks.
  20. You slayed it! We all hope for similar results but can't achieve them. You did.
  21. I can see your point but I've also become a 'fan' of using it where I was not for many years. I was a '0' guy, always! I'm sure there is a certain amount of depth loss with high amounts of it on, but it can make good targets stand out too. If you don't have deep targets at your beach, then it can be a treat.
  22. I got one of those 'after sunset' tickets and came back just as another writer was in the parking lot another time. It can take the fun out of a detecting day.
  23. For me the beach is a bit of a 'different thing' but that depends on the beach and its conditions. Today I was working a beach that had a black sand line due to the wave action. The ground would go from mild to strong depending on where you were relative to that black sand/wave energy line. If you walked parallel to that line then tracking could be useful to keep you in similar sand. The best targets for me are often on the dry side of the line. If you work the beach at a perpendicular to the beach line (walk up and down or zig zag) it often times will not keep up and you go manual to get the targets without them being masked. The best remedy for some beaches like this is not necessarily the direction you work it but the speed you work it. Slower is better with overlapping swings if you are getting any targets of value or picking up clues.
