  1. I'm suggesting that you and I, and anyone else that wants to grow in becoming a better detectorist should experiment. Air tests are fine for what they are. So are in ground test. Each provide information, but the information that is more relevant is that which comes closest to duplicating actual field conditions of the sites we actually hunt.

As far as your points in this Thread, instead of assuming that you could extrapolate from your prior Air testing, why not duplicate the actual test as best you can?  I was impressed enough with the video that I did just that while at home for lunch today.   Not on a Medieval Hammered low alloy Silver coin. I haven't dug one of those yet, but I do have a moderately tainted 8" deep Copper Cent. Close enough for me.   Park  M3  12 Sensitivity LG 30 coil=a solid, repeatable, very soft hit.

I will never need to hunt with Sensitivity that low but it is good information and gives one confidence that the machine will perform when I need to run at 20 or 16. That's the point for me. Practical field use knowledge.

Also, there is no need to be so prickly and quick to want to prove your point in so many of your Posts. We are all here to help each other if we can. I enjoy a good exchange of thoughts & ideas but am not interested in reading or participating in arguments.

  2. Jeff’s post is spot on from my experience.

Increasing the Audio Gain will also cause any EMI to be more prominent. Faster Recovery settings also will.

I prefer changing the frequency to dropping Sensitivity below 22 or so, but it is a good thing to know that even 16 is surprisingly deep.

  3. Welcome from East Texas.  That sure is some pretty country where you are.   The stones for that fence may very well have come from clearing crop fields that are now long overgrown with woods. There is bound to be an old house & barn site fairly close by. Look for a year round water supply with a nearby high spot for the house. There should be some interesting history there for you to find.  Old roads are there too & may look like the seasonal creek you mentioned.  The AT Max is a good detector but a little dated on features and not the easiest to learn the audio on.  Lots of good information here from some knowledgeable folks.

1 cent in 1835 had the buying power of 35 cent in today's money, so 1/4 of that would be around 8.75 cents in today's money, but stuff was really cheap back then so I think it would buy more than almost 9 cents worth.

Prices depended a lot on where you were. In settled areas they were whatever was considered normal. In frontier areas prices were much higher. Transport cost was one real factor, but scarcity and outright price gouging was common.

  5. Equinox 700 or the Legend will serve you well. One nice feature exclusive to the Legend is being able to have the audio in the external speaker AND Headphones at the same time. I hunt that way with one of my daughters who doesn't like to wear the HPs so I do. We can still talk while I follow her around as she detects to teach her.

  6. I'm not aware of any dials on the Impact. It is all push button if I remember right. Replacing the batteries with a fresh set is good advice & always the first thing to try. If there is a Factory Reset procedure, that should be tried also.  Nokta has a very good Service Center that can repair it if need be.  The Impact is a very good unit. Very versatile.

    Welcome to the Forum.

    Hi JCR.

You probably already know this, but for the Legend owners who don't, M3 is the lowest weighted Park mode SMF. M3's processed signal will give a target response similar to around 7 khz.

M3 and 4 khz will ID many coins that are masked by nonferrous, notably better than the higher weighted M1 and M2. The caveat is that such low frequencies may also ID some aluminum trash higher than normal.

The whole point of my poorly articulated Post was to point out that todays high end detectors like the Legend give us a lot of information about what is under the coil. We/I just need to be able to understand & apply this info.   If you know a cleanly Disc'd target will not give a TID, then you know that crappy sounding iffy target that throws up a mid range TID & one way high tone is worth investigating.  Virgin sites with easy targets are rare. Most sites only have masked/iffy targets left. Some of these are real keepers if we know the clues to dig them.   You also need to know how best to approach a site that has Al trash vs old nails vs higher mineralization. Conditions rule proper detector setup. It is a lot to keep up with & manage.
