That guy is good. A very well done instructive video. I have long used that technique to size a target & ID iron. I did not realize it worked to such an extent on non ferrous trash targets.

Thanks for your thoughts. I haven't noticed any lag with the wireless ones I use. I was a little concerned NM said they were going to BT on the new SMF machine. I'm glad to know that BTLL should be fine. Yes sound is individual. I spent a good bit of time trying to match the best for me wired HP to use as backups for each detector. The AT Max audio sounds better with lower ohm headphones, the Vista X with high ohm & the Anfibio is kind of in the middle. I will eventually get a set of the Sun Ray Golds for the Anfibio.

I have two of the prior version (I have a backup set, but my original set refuses to die
), been using these for a decade now. Highly recommended, and will eliminate most compatibility issues. No wireless is as good as wired if you are really serious.
Thanks for dropping by Joe!
Steve, you mention that you feel high quality wired headphones sound better than any wireless headphones. Do you include more recent offerings like Garrett's Z Link & NM Green Edition? They sound just right to me. I keep back up wired headphones with me whenever I go hunt. Different ones depending on which detector I am using. All based on quality of sound to my hearing.

I see on another Garrett thread that introduces a larger coil for the Apex; a 11X14 DD called the Reaper. If they bring it out for the current AT series I will probably get one.

Clearing a high potential site is well worth the effort if you can. Well done!

Still, it is a good idea. The older machines should be remembered & more widely known about. I think it helps us better use & understand what is current in detectors and that the operator is still the key to success. Maybe keep the hunt open ended?

Check the coil cable connection for snugness then do a Factory reset. This will get you a fresh base. Afterwards find a CLEAN patch of ground in Zero mode and get a good ground balance on the detector. At 6/8 sensitivity it should be stable with a good ground balance. If the ground is highly mineralized, then you may need to reduce the sensitivity more or run the Iron Disc up to around 5-10. If the EMI is bad it will false & flash VDI's with the search coil elevated, that is what the frequency shift is for. If you still have instability you may have a bad coil. To check, tap it lightly with your no jewelry hand.

Who makes the carbon shafts for the Simplex? Thought the Simplex didn't have a round shaft.
The Kruzer, Amphibio and Racers use round shafts and the lower carbon poles work. Overall not a huge weight saving, maybe an oz or so but they are a bit more ridged.
The Anfibio has a triangular profile shaft.

In addition to my pinpointer, I always carry a small magnet in my digging pouch to make quicker work of the small Iron bits that show up in many holes. In known bad nail sites I will add a very strong magnet with a homemade handle. I just carry it stuck to my hand digger sheath. It will pull through a good bit of loose dirt. Then I can zone in on any additional targets in the hole.

From my understanding, the coils for the MDT are as special as the detector unit itself. Maybe more so as the concept was developed based on the coil.

Since Pinpointers became readily available I have carried one. I don't use it on every target but I would not want to be without one in the field. Great time saver and frustration preventer.

DIG5050, can you expound on the differences you have seen between the various modes & their recovery speeds?

Canvas tarps were a common item on a more prosperous farm. Linseed oiled for waterproofing.

Yes you do, but you can buy an adapter on Amazon for less than $10...paired with the MS-3 headphones (they have an adjustable volume knob), they're awesome!
The Z Link receiver unit has it's own volume control also. I set it to get the right Pinpointer volume and then adjust the headphone volume. I keep the main detector volume set close to maximum.

JCR. So you have to have or use an adapter on the Z Link 1/4 to 1/8 or visa versa?
I use the 1/4" Z Link transmitter & receiver set up with wired Killer B headphones on my Vista X. Also the Z Link Garrett AT Pinpointer. I could use the MS 3 headphones but the Higher ohm Killer Bs sound better on that detector. If you need 1/4 to 1/8 you can get a short adapter.

The Garrett Z Link system is a bit more money but it is excellent.

I would just like to have something in print. A thread on Advanced NM operation on this forum that NM actively participated in would be great.

It would be nice to understand some of the underlying function. I know it is kind of getting into the weeds and many don't care to. I would like to see NM give more in depth operational discussion. A supplemental guide beyond the basics in the owner's manual. The detectors are so capable. I want to know how to run it at it's best. Perhaps Dilek will see this and chime in.

On the Anfibio Multi (and I think Kruzer & others) there is a definite step in sensitivity between 39&40 Gain and again between 69&70 Gain. Is this a change in the Internal Threshold? In a way this would be the inverse of the way the F75 adjusts sensitivity according to Mike Hillis. Regardless, it is a very good set up in difficult sites. Most NM users know about the difference in response speed between 89 & 90 Gain on 3DI. This is different. I had read about these steps in a forum post that quoted Alper of NM. I can't seem to find that post now that I want to re read it.

I find it intriguing that it supposedly can use the nail & Iron contamination of a site to differentiate the non ferrous. It seems to be able to see the contrast between the two and use that to advantage.

JCR,
Great idea! I've heard if one is careful, one can distinguish glass bottles from other materials by the feel, and sound the probe makes! Probably like detecting; takes some practice, I'm sure!!
F350,
Keep up the saga! Love the interesting finds!👍👍
A probe is handy for sure. They are not hard to make either. I have two that stay in the Scrambler with the digging tool arsenal. Get on an old house site and find the privies & dump sites. It is a easy & positive way to confirm what my CX II Bloodhound 2 box sounds off on.
