I just noticed they arent wireless......

 

I really like having no cords to the detector...

 

I even saw a bluetooth transmitter at a truckstop that was tiny....and i already have a Motorola bluetooth headset like your senns....

 

I dont think i can go back to wired headsets.

 

But i like the style of these headsets vs my small headphone type unit because i cannnot wear a hat with mine.

 

I even like the earbuds that can also hear ambient noise by Sennheiser----but those wires!!!!

I hate wires too mate I use a wirless transmitter and reciver for the 5k.

And I use the wm12 on the 7k.

i see there are a few different models of the eaphones----

 

Which kind do you prefer-----i know this can be a personal choice thing---but i was just curious---- i use a TDK Kleer wireless system... and even that small headset will fall off my head if i dont remember to adjust it down to my neck when digging a hole---

 

The earbuds seemed like they may be the ticket for me--(i have a set of Motorola that have the behind the neck piece ---- it feels weird when it touches the back of my neck sometimes---- kind of startles me....lol)

 

Anyways, another great video, keeps me in the right attitude for my walk in....at least i dont have to worry about the crawlers you have---my main concern is falling or twisting an ankle or knee --- it would be a very hard crawl out....

Don't worry we have our fair share of goldfields covered in trash too!

That's why I know how to use the CTX so well as I've got 1000's of hours on it now for gold, treasure and old coins in very different conditions.

I live in NSW and the eastern gold fields had large populations in their heyday just like in the USA.

I also travel..........A lot!

Those Video's are all taken in the last 2 months of last year's season before we did that mission we did one into the NSW desert, very different terrain and geology to where we were in the vids.

And before that we were in the eastern NSW gold fields different terrain and geology again.

Shouldn't be to long before you get the spare modules on your side of the pond now.

They do just amplify everything, some of the very expensive amps used in the music industry have a semiconductor in them to eliminate the back ground noise. But no amplifier or booster will just amplify targets they amplify everything, noise, signal, threshold.

I use a BZ booster on my sdc.

When im using headphones in conjunction with a booster I put a volume control in line in between the booster and headphones.

This allows you to eliminate the amp noise by turning the booster on quietly and then turn down the in line volume control until the fuzzy amp noise disappears, then turn up the booster volume to what ever volume you like.

Once you get it right just tape the in line volume control so it dose not move then you only have to use the booster volume to control the volume and the noise is eliminated.

Yeah, it would not surprise me if Des has contacted Minelab re. my email to him about not being able to use tracks and waypoints from the GPZ on Ozi without going online. Hopefully they can work out a solution that will satisfy all, especially us users. Would be real neat if OZI was on GPZ screen, not likely on current one as probably hasn`t the memory, but Des worked a legal way to do such with Magellan mapping GPS`s, just a simple utility. I am not very fond of proprietary stuff, believe it is self defeating as it stifles tech advances in long term. IBM showed that with allowing PC compatibles way back. But it works for Apple, big time.

 

 Haven`t as yet put update on field notebook or smart phone, just have on home PC which I have not got a GPS on, use it just for manipulating and downloading maps etc. It has always opened on last map, think you can specify this in setup. One of those gonnadoos gottadoos.

It allways opend on the last map but not your last cursor position like it dose now.

I found it a big help as some of the specialist images I use cover a big area and it was a real pain to find where you were on the image without using dummy waypoints.

Apparently genuine Minelab scuff covers and backup batteries are available now at some Australian dealers. Presumably they will be available at U.S. dealers in the very near future.

The Razorback version scuff cover may be cheaper and better, hard to beat a deal like that.

I purchased spare batterys from 'Miners Den Sydney' 2 days ago for $249aud.

They also had spare cover's as well for $60.

Should not be long until you get them on your side of the pond!

I will rarely need to replace the coil cover as I siliconed a piece of 3mm lexan plastic in its place.

Lexan is VERY abrasion resistant so it will easily last 1-3 seasons full time use, if I were to continue to use the minelab one's it would cost a pretty penny as they only last about 2-4 weeks depending on the ground type.

Dale, Yes 3.95;6d, couple of weeks ago downloaded, always check through his update menu.. Haven`t searched out its new features but just love OZI, its function, its writers continuing capacity to take on board suggestions and implement them plus of course his endeavour to give us updates free.(this day and age is rare) I think his approach has rewarded him with world-wide use, judging by the dedicated forums international members.

I agree with you 100% Vic ozi really dose try to keep his customers happy and up to date.

Ozi can do most of what the expensive program's like 'esri's arc gis' program can do!

And the bloke, I think his name is Dez is very helpful if you ever have any problems.

If you downloaded the update most of the features I mentioned above will work automatically, you should notice straight away as it now remembers your last location and opens the map on it or the place on the last map you were working on.

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for a free ride here

I purchase 1:50,000 topo maps for my region's of interest then scan and calibrate them into Ozi

Go to the ozi site and look in the tutorials section on how to use your states government maps in digital format, you can buy them off the government and you just follow the instructions on the ozi site on how to convert them for use in ozi.

Gold Hound, which map sets do you find to be the most useful for Ozi in Australia?

 

I've found some 1:200,000 but the detail is still a bit limited and the 1:100,000 only cover the edges of our island.

 

Also the geo maps on the Ozi site look interesting but are they any good?

I make my own maps out of specialist satellite images, military topo's, satellite photos and findings from the field so can't comment on the ozi ones as I don't use or need them.

You mention using moving map software called basic Topo. I wish to have a look at such, but cannot find on net. Have you the internet address of it? Whilst I use Oziexplorer I do note there is becoming more such software as user base expands, am always keen to keep up with this tech.

ozi just made an update for oziexplorer pc it has a few useful additions and fixed a couple of bugs.

It now remembers your last position and map when you turn it off, and focuses in on the cursor better than before and has many other good changes.

Download the update for free from their website.

I would prefer to be able to assign function's of my choosing to the gps buttons as I have never and will never use the inbuilt gps.

While we are talking about firmware I would also like the following updates:

-Modes! I would like to be able to create user modes with all of the settings saved under the mode like the ctx.
And be able to assign them names, 10 programmable modes would be enough.
And be able to use the exchange2 software to build or modify them.

And it would be good if I could assign them to the gps or user buttons so I could toggle between 2x modes easily with just 1 button press.

 

-Audio type, I would like to be able to change the audio curve to suit the conditions and task like on the gpx.

-Audio smoothing, I would like numerical control of the audio smoothing like the stabilizer on the gpx.
Say 1-20 range, 20 being high and 1 being off.

-Ground balance reset, I would like to be able to just dump all of the ground balance info without loosing all of my settings.
Or if they gave us modes when you did a reset your modes would remain unchanged.

-Separate volume controls for wm12 speaker and headphones like on the ctx so when you plugin or unplug your headphones the gpz recognizes them and adjusts the volume to the appropriate setting that you have assigned for ether the speaker or headphones.

All of these upgrades are easily deliverable, as they are just software changes.
And these would make the detector much better to use and increase its performance in differing conditions.

I detected my biggest ever pice at over a meter close to one and a half side on to a mono.

You mentioned a detail that I left out - I usually ran my detector a little "ratty."

The null response you mention was another and different indicator of a possible signal as well.

The other aspect that I forgot to mention was that

I was running the detector in either Normal or Fine Gold Timings.

I do not regard the null signal as an indicator of a possile signal but rather as a common signal that we are always chasing!

A large percentage of the gold I find are these null signals.

It is very important to have your settings right to hear these targets as they are the easiest to miss but quite oftern they are the bigger deeper targets.

As far as the timings go I always run the most sensitive that the detector can handle for the ground type.

And I can always get these target types in any timing.

Just about every large deep nugget I have found made that warbly sound!

It is not unusual at all like he describes in the video, he is clearly a beginner.

To myself, I characterized this faint 'chirp' sound as an anomaly.

It was rarely repeatable, which is why it took me quite a while to realize it might be indicating something.

Also I did not hear it in every area I detected.

The places I do remember hearing it were very highly mineralized. 

As I said, it was not repeatable, but after a boot scrape or two, it would become a signal.

Lastly, it did not happen often - maybe once or twice over a two day period and I hunt long days.

 

I was so surprised by this little discovery that I mentioned it to a couple of knowledgeable acquaintances early on when the 5000 came out (and I was lucky enough to be able to afford one).

One of the guys I talked to knew about it too and actually suggested that I not to say anything about it because it could give whoever caught on to it "an edge."

But sharing stuff like this is what makes it a great hobby so didn't really pay attention to that part.

And it was a good reminder that I will probably never learn enough

to be able to repay the kindnesses of the generous and intelligent people

who have helped me learn this hobby.

 

I am hoping there may be some other folks out there who will be able to amplify on

this. I know for sure I am not the only person who got on to this 5k quirk.

I regularly find smaller deep targets that make the faint chirp you are talking about.

And I find alot of deep larger nuggets that only null the threshold, we (goldhounds crew) call them a null signal.

This is one of the main types of response I am concentrating on hearing.

Particularly if I'm in deep ground gridding!

That is why we run our detectors a lot noisyer than most as the extra threshold chatter can help amplify the null response when you know what you are doing.

The gold signal varys quite a bit from a blip that won't even give you a number to a to a solid thump of a signal that gives a definate target id number.

This is what sorts out the inexperienced from the experienced when it comes to gold in the jar.

I have found gold as small as .2g with the standard coil, but the signal was just a blip that repeated with no id number.

Once you get use to the target trace and how it behaves with gold nuggets and how it behaves with junk it helps greatly with IDing targets for digging and junk.

Did you notice how much better the target separation is in heavy trash with my modes compared to the standard one's?

Did you have the target trace tuned on?

I was a die-hard headphone guy. JP tried to convert me to external speakers in Austrlia but I did not want to do something new on such an important trip. Now that I have converted I wish I had done so sooner. It really is nice being headphone free.

The only issue is external noise, and you still need headphones around running water or wind in the trees. I am going to check into fitted in the ear phones for those really windy days as headphone earphone cups seem to do as good a job picking up and amplifying wind noise as anything also.

I pretty much use headphones all of the time.

The best headphones I have used out of many are 'sennheiser pmx 680 spots' headphones.

They are in ear type that wrap around your head, they have crystal clear audio and leave enough space to not block your ear so you can still hear your surrounds and close enough to be uneffected by wind noise.
