  1. The 2 combinations that i use are the Deus with the HF elliptical coil but the HF9'' coil is just as good,80khz using the Hot programme and the the XY screen, deadly on small gold and silver items which of course cover what you are looking for jewellery etc.

I also use the Nox with the 6'' coil in AM mode and field 1,either 2 or 5 tones but for me 50 tones gives me overload, although the Deus can give my ears a bashing i find it easier than 50 tones on the Nox.

The setup i would still pick up as i am leaving home would be the Deus using the HF coil, great target separation and the added bonus of that much higher 80khz which is absolutely ideal for small gold jewellery.

  2. The 2 elliptical coils that i use the most on my TDI Pro is the Coiltek 14x9 Mono and the Jimmy 10x5 folded mono coil, the latter coil and also 2 others i bought from when Jimmy Sierra closed down his range of coil 2-3 years back, including shipping to the UK was crazy cheap including the 20mm Grande Sierra Mono coil.

The 10x5 coil is mainly used for very small gold jewellery but my favourite and on the TDI Pro almost all the time is the 14x9 Mono which is amazingly lightweight as its foam filled but of course absolutely no good in surf etc as it would want to float all the time, but as i dont do beach detecting then i dont have a problem.

The Sadie coil is the one that most folks go for but almost impossible to find one at a decent price here in the UK,but if one came along at the right price i would be very tempted and can fully understand why they sold out in the recent sale.

  3. I rarely if ever leave home without a minimum of 2 VLF machines and if i have knowledge of the site that i am visiting then i will take a 'heavy hitter' as i call them this could be either the TDI Pro or one of my Nexus machines, latter machines are solely for difficult ground conditions or i suspect a possibly hoard etc.

Of course nugget hunting is not mine/our thing here in the UK but of course gold is a common denominator this could be coinage or artefacts rather than gold in its natural form.

Ground conditions and targets and also things like human habitation which can cause us grieve also need to be taken into account as well,so not only a few detectors but more than often a few extra coil sizes as well to give some extra advantages.

Also another reason is that if i have travelled some distance to a permission and a fault develops with just the one detector that i had taken i can assure you the 'verbal vocabulary' would be off the scale trust me on that one 😀 So i always take spare batteries, headphones and many other detector temporary repair bits and bobs.

In all the decades that i have been detecting as yet and probably will never happen i have never had the need to return home because of not be able to detect with a faulty or broken machine.

  4. 2 machines standing out head and shoulders for me regarding finding gold, its in a different format as basically here in the UK nuggets are almost non existent, but we do have gold in coin and artefact format and these 2 stand out machine for me are my 'original' T2 that i have had since 2006/7 and the DFX one of the 1st batch that came here back in 2003.

Not sure exactly what the magic is with these 2 are but they have found me celtic hammered gold coins, and George 111 ful guineas an Viccy Sovereigns and also some small gold artefacts,i also have all the modern machines ie TDI Pro,Deus HF coils and Nox but non have come close to anything that the T2 and DFX has found, the ironic thing is that i stopped using these 2 special gold machines because i though the grass was greener on the other side so i bought the Deus and Nox but that has not happened.

So for the last 6 months have been using these 2 old classic again as everyday use and also noticed that my finds have once again increased again,we hope to come out of a lockdown after Dec2 and will be able to get out detecting again on my own permission again.

  5. If that was me using the Nox in a situation like that then i would not give up till i had it out of the ground or at least i could see what it was,the UK his as we are all aware of goes way back and what the target is/could be anything.

As you are digging deeper and the signal is getting stronger that surely must indicate to you that something is getting nearer, forget the TID its the audio you need to rely on and never ever walk away from a decent audio target.

As this location is on the site of a possible Motte and Bailey site a couple of things may need to be looked into sis/was the site scheduled ?? if not of course you can carry on digging but if it is then one need to take that into account that you may need to stop digging, that is of course upto you.Regarding what the target is/could be while its still in the ground it could be anything hence the reason for carrying on digging to find out what you have located.

Stream/Rivers and river crossings have always been places that could provide some decent finds, this could be because of say votive offering, items that have been stolen but items like weapons disposed of in water and artefacts from war itself.

Never give up on such a target, well i certainly would not give up especially when the signal increases the deeper/nearer the target you are getting.

  6. Only ever watched 2 programmes some years ago, could tell it was going to a 'BS' series, never watched any since neither videos,my opinion was never hidden in the 1st place but as long as it grabs folks attention and it pulls in the viewers and that is how they make serious money from advertising like these new super duper detectors and other allied equipment.

As long a folks watch it they will keep stringing folks along and they will probably make more money than if they had found some sort of treasure.

  7. In all the years that i have been detecting i have never ever used anything to clean or preserve any of my finds this includes many many roman, saxon and celtic gold and silver coins and many artefacts going back 1000s of years. All i ever do is use a very very soft old toothbrush under running water from the tap and dry them off.

Over the years i have seen many coins including some rare ones rendered zero value because folks have used chemicals, abrasives, tumbled them and other ways as well, coin collectors who are looking for rare valuable coins basically prefer them as you found them other wise they wont buy them if cleaned the wrong way.

The only things that i may possibly treat would be BA 'Bronze Age' items like axe heads or spears as often they can suffer from a bronze disease that can start eating away at the bronze, but although i would look at getting these items treated i would not do it myself though.

Of course what i do with my finds other folks may not do,but i prefer to be on the safe side and not damage some historical items because of lack of proper cleaning knowledge,my motto is 'if in doubt dont'.

  8. Although i have never done any nugget hunting,a couple of setups that i use and it depends on the targets etc,the 1st one is a 4'' coil on a cut down Tesoro shaft which has been mentioned a few times on this forum.

But i also own and occasionally use and possibly the best method for nugget hunting pinpointing wise is the 'UNIProbe pinpointer Detector PRO' which is basically a 7/8'' pinponter Pulse probe that should b ideal for small gold recovery although i will admit i have never used one for recovery of nuggets.

  9. Almost all detectors i would have thought could be 'used' and called a Bling Bleepa' cannot see what would be special about it for recovering jewellery, any jewellery that is made of what ever metal ie gold, silver or what ever can be found by a 'metal detector'.

Some situations a more specific operating detector like multi freq or Pulse for sea water would be the best machine for the job, coil size i would have said coil size could play a big part also in locating 'bling' as well.

A few machines that i would personally use and not because they are special machines and would increase the chance of finding jewellery but my T2 with 5'' coil,Deus with Elliptical coil and my Nox with 6'' coil.

Some detectors excel better than others, but i cannot see how you could/would produce just a 'bling machine'

  10. Hollowing this project with great interest, although i do have the standard TDI and a backup battery for my TDI Pro,but as a result of the company going out of business the possibility of batteries become scares could mean that this project will be worth while looking into very seriously.

Thanks for taking the time to post this indepth project, always admire the amount of time that you put into the TDI testing especially the coils which has to be the best that i have seen and covers so many coils.

    Thanks again

Hi Rick, thank you. Yes, I know Reg and Richard as I'm a member of the same detecting club as them. The hoard was found before I started detecting, but I saw it being craned out of the field while I was out on a run. Neil Mahrer from Jersey Heritage, who has been taking the hoard apart, lives a few doors down from me.

We are free to detect the beaches and although there is still quite a lot of live ordnance on them it was fired in training and defensive preparations.

There was no direct fighting here so there isn't the concern of disturbing a battlefield.

Steve,i think i am right in saying they found the hoard initially with normal detectors but finally nailed it with a twin box detector,i could be wrong on that but pretty certain they mentioned it in a video that it was finally located with a twin box.

But some tremendous homework on both those folks,if someone in that case a farmer found some scattered coins in a tight radius 30 years ago its a good indication that something else could be in the area and of course they had that hunch and was rewarded for it.

  12. Steve, welcome onboard, your a lucky guy living on Jersey one of my favourite places and visited it many times, have you every met 'Reg Mead and Richard Miles' who found the famous the world famous 'Grouville Hoard' Grouville Hoard The Grouville Hoard is a hoard of an estimated 70,000 late Iron Age and Roman coins reported in June 2012

Are you able to detect for WW2 artifacts on Jersey as its 'frowned' upon in France especially on beaches etc,but great thing you do about re-uniting lost jewellery.

Look forward to reading your posts.
