  1. Thanks for the info, GS! Do you think the 1907 penny would be accurately indicative of the period? It’s in exceptionally good condition. The camp site seemed somewhat small so perhaps not used for long. There are only about 3-4 leveled off areas for tents and what could have been some sort of wood deck? Didn’t seem like enough wood for a whole shack.
  2. Long time no talk! I was detecting the site of a mining camp out in the desert, hoping for coins or tokens and did manage to find my first old coin. This 1907 Indian head penny! Exciting for me. But excitement lay only a couple inches from it in another hole where I found this Vaseline jar with the lid still on! It reads, ”Vaseline” Chesebrough New-York Im horrible at finding information about old glass on the internet so I was wondering if anyone here might know something about it or be able to point me to sharp resources. Thanks a lot! I’ll throw the photo of the camp site in later.
  3. Thanks for sharing! Awesome gold, country, and geology.
  4. Ah man, thank you all sO much for all the info. I know many of these common questions can get to the point of beating a dead horse here, so I really appreciate all of your input here. My main concern around cleaning is what might and might not damage the coin, thanks again for the resources. I wanted to play it very very safe and not even assume water is the safest. I understand hardness, so I would never rub with dirt, but I totally forewent the thought of what could happen with it loosely perched in a plastic container. I got lucky and dug this out with a stick since the signal had a lot of good signs going for it. You guys rock. Conserve*
  5. Gotcha! Thanks for the input, everybody. Might be a silly question here, but I suppose it’s fine to give it a little wash with water? I mean it sat in the ground getting rained on for a hundred years right? I’ll do some more research on this coin before ultimately deciding to get it totally restored though. I really want to see it clean lol plus the safest place I felt like putting it was in my little nug jug where it rubbed against some plastic and cleaned itself just a little bit… it’s hard to tell, but the ear has some rubbed clean spots kind of like the N of ONE.
  6. Hey guys, newer coin shooter here. Dabbling from nugget shooting. I found a mining camp I know no metal detector has ever be swung over and I found this beaut! Wondering if I should clean it?
  7. What would be some pros and cons of running a GPX 5000 with a dd coil at the beach? I’d say cons are: - Not waterproof - Heavy - Deep digs - EMI??? Got another hunt in as well. Trying to detect the wet and as close to the water as possible. But the beach is so steep and washed off that it’s been too much of a challenge for my well being to try and dig targets in the rolling tide. Bad timing today too, the tide was coming up.
  8. Also, I’m just learning the nox. I have probably 500 hours with a GPX 5000 that describes the majority of my detecting experience. But there’s a lot of carryover foundation. I know I’m not operating my nox as good as I can operate my 5000, but I’m excited about logging the hours to master the nox.
  9. I thought it was nickels I wanted to find! And that was a bracelet, just string. Mostly beach. I put the location under each photo.
  10. I’m looking for gold, but I’m not getting any yet lol Beach Park Beach - First ring ever, aluminum? Beach - That fake doubloon got me… Beach
  11. Yep, the key to detecting, is experience. The key to gaining experience, is detetecting. The key to finding what you want, is digging for it.
  12. Yep! My first PI was a used SD2200D, in 2016 and I got an easy upgrade to the smaller lithium batteries right away. There are probably still easy conversion kits from Doc for this model, where I got my gold screamer. Those old detectors are still awesome. Just swing it over gold! Found a fair bit still with my 2200. Betcha can with a 3500 👍
  13. Good luck out there, sounds like a dream. Loved the comment about the wool socks, I’m currently at the Moose fire in ID, relating with a bag full of wool socks 🤣
  14. Thanks again! Real prospecting. I’ll plan on backpacking then 👌 😂 I’m excited and very curious to see if placer indicators I’m familiar with correlate out here. Just bought a nox the other day, so I’m excited to have a lightweight detector now. We’re headed to Oregon for the next couple weeks, I’ll be researching if I get the chance and dreaming of nuggets.
  15. Man, this is a motivating post. I’m working in Northern Colorado for the summer and I brought my detector just in case I get the right motivation. Those little flat nuggets you’re finding are EXACTLY what I’m finding back home on some sort of residual patch on top of a mountain out in the desert SW. Reading about your boulders that are split rough, in addition to the flatties, and your theory on an old sedimentary deposit that did some geologic press activity really harmonizes with my own theories about my patch. Hope you’re still having luck out there, maybe we’ll run into each other if I go hunting some ancient placers. Respectfully.
  16. Those old PIs are still gold killers. I was inspired by all of Lanny’s old tales where he was using a 2000 or 2100?… and I bought a 2200d under all the excitement and hope spelled out in his stories. Worked out great for me and I started finding nuggets immediately in an area I was originally hunting with a Tesoro Lobo. If there’s gold to be found, any upgrade will improve your odds, ie. vlf->PI IMO you made a great buy. Also, as far as the battery. I got rid of those brick batteries right away and went to Doc’s Gold Screamer with the 7.2v batteries. At a full charge the batteries will read at 8v+ and end up draining down to the stated rating. My 2200 ran great with them.
  17. Hello! Just throwing out a feeler if any reputable members here in said vicinity might be interested in meeting up for some detecting this week. I’m staying in the Oroville area and attending some short meetings in Sacramento until heading home Sunday morning. Shoot me a message if there’s any interest in connecting! Thanks!
  18. Love these stories! Sounds like a great time and some great conversations. I’m sitting here wishing I could join you one day in those far northern reaches!
  19. Awesome! You sure did give me quite the itch with this trip report…. Awesome finds, best of continuing luck!
