  1. Someone in another thread mentioned the Manticore and 900 being used to slow down the amount of XP Deus IIs flying off the shelves. I'm not a dealer and maybe I'm bias, and don't keep up with all detectors, but has the D2 or Legend been flying off the shelves? I know a guy that bought both the Legend and the D2. A couple of more friends have the D2. I traded a detector for a Legend, but it has seen very little use. The guys I mention are really hard core and tend to have many detectors to begin with. I see more talk about the D2 than the Legend, but overall at least in my view neither of those detectors have had a major impact on the detecting scene. From what I have seen it's not like everyone and their brother felt they had to run out and buy one. The Legend is affordable. The D2 has a better reputation as state of the art, and is possibly the best over all detector out there at the moment. So am I wrong? Have either of these flown off the shelves? Have either made the impact they were supposed to make? I'm sure Minelab has had both the updated 700-900 and Manticore in the works for quite awhile. I guess they could have pushed them out to regain market share, but it would seem to me they are both normal roll outs that have been in the works for some time now.

I saw a Manticore on the big auction site yesterday.  Surprisingly, it only had 1 bid and was no higher than the original MAP but I imagine the "gotta have it now" folks will run it up once they find it.

It's up to $2,616 now with 3 days 5 hours left.

I think there is a new CTX-3030 in the works.  Who knows if they will put something revolutionary in that or not.  I suspect it is probably a year away but who knows.  Minelab could decide to announce it before we even get our Manticores.

I would be totally flabbergasted if that ever came to be. I can see some folks loving the CTX platform staying the same except for being more waterproof and in a light weight package. I really think the people hoping for, and or holding out for that are pretty near delusional though.

There seems to be a few here that want a machine that just beeps and give a number...fine have at it...some of us like a little more info.  If you never used a ctx how can you even comment on it? I mean really...I think there are other reasons some of you are poo pooing the manticore but don't want to admit it.

I'm not poo pooing the Manticore at all. I'm saying the differences in it being better than a 800 or 900 may boil down to the slight differences in the performance of say an Etrac vs. a CTX. I'm just going by my use of the Etrac and a buddy who had both machines at the same time and used his Etrac mostly as his #1. I've heard a lot of guys say the difference between FBS-I and FBS II was minimal. TT has some advantages and I expect the same will be true on the Manticore. I'm fired up about the Manticore, but trying to be realistic about improvements. Like I said if Minelab has made the Manticore much more EMI tolerant I'm going to be extremely happy just with that one fix.

longbow62, didn't you say you have been on the Manticore waiting list since August or so?

I think you are just experiencing the frustration all of us Pre-Order groupies are experiencing.  Several times I have considered pulling my order and forgetting about the Manticore until spring.  I don't know why these detector manufacturers put us through this.

I'm all in on the Manticore and excited about it. There is near zero probability of me canceling my pre-order. I am a slightly less excited now that the 900 has been announced. Only because it also presents the potential improvement over the 800 I was initially looking for. That being said the Manticore is supposed to represent the absolute best Minelab has to offer when it comes to latest and greatest. That's what I want right now. I am hoping not to buy another new detector for quite some time. At least not until there is some kind of new breakthrough technology, and realistically I bet that's going to be awhile.

  6. I don't expect the Manticore to leaps and bounds better than the 800, and even less improvement over the supposedly improved 900. I do think the 2D screen of the Manticore in certain situations will provide more info than a 900 without it can. I guess we won't know how much better the Manticore/MultiIQ+ is until we get good comparisons with it versus the 900. I always thought the CTX was more fluff than real performance gains when compared to the Etrac, but never used a CTX. I actually didn't even really like the Etrac for most of the places I hunted. I really think of the 900 and Manticore the same way.

One of the things I'm wondering is how much the noise cancel on the 900 has been improved. It lacks the the long extended noise cancel press incorporated on the Manticore. If the 900 is not significantly more EMI friendly than the 800 then there is no way I would consider it. EMI is the Equinox's greatest weakness in my opinion.

  7. I'm trying to remain calm and not get to impatient. I ordered the first day you could pre-order from the dealer I used which was Aug. 27th. So I have to be very near the top of his list. I'm guessing top five at least. I was hoping to have it by the first of the year. My desire to detect with the Nox 800 has even kind of waned since I ordered it. It's like I'm saving all my hunts for the Manticore.

  8. Not that it matters that much, but I must not have perfect pitch because I am struggling to hear the difference between clad and silver in the video. I've always wanted to test the people who claim to be able to hear the difference on buried clad and silver with the screen taped off. Maybe ten of each. Even with their chosen detector be it Explorer, Etrac, CTX. I don't think they could tell. Then you throw in worn silver in the mix. Personally I don't think it's possible. Again not that it really matters because your going to be digging any tone like that anyway. Nice little video though.

  9. I don't know 700 pre-orders sounds like a lot to me. If you haven't pre-ordered by now then it's probably going to take months and months to get one. I kinda doubt when the first big container shipment arrives it will even have all 700 pre-ordered Manticores on it. I have no idea how that stuff works, but with them having to get worldwide pre-orders filled it seems like a stretch to think Minelab can fulfill the 700 U.S. pre-orders in one shipment. With the 700 and 900 roll out happening at the same time that could even slow things up even further.

I'm just pointing out that TT will not "show the shape of an object" as you stated which is being misquoted in a few places.

Objects will have different shapes (and positions) on the TT screen depending on their metallic composition, but that shape won't necessarily be that of the object being detected - and if it does it's more a coincidence than by design.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I've seen some items being swung over that did not seem to be a very wide span of I.D. numbers show up as a stretched out item, or oblong when in fact that was their shape. Take a ring pull for instance those don't have a wide I.D. range yet they don't show up completely round. The cartridge case has a tight I.D., but you swing horizontal and it shows it be a longer item. You swing over it vertical it shows narrow and would I.D. the same so I don't see how the shape is controlled exactly by a wide or narrow I.D. spread.

Thank you for the video PSPR.

The video shows exactly what I mentioned in my first post about the 2D (ID Map) being an ID plotter with an automatic and preset decay.

My question isn't really about how the ID map works, but rather, if it has any benefit over TID and/or tones.

So far, I can see 2 disadvantages of the ID map compared to TID. The only advantage I see with it, is the ability to expose iron falsing as I talked about in my previous post.

You keep saying the same thing over and over on 2 different forums. We get it. You don't think the 2D screen is really that useful. You think audio and numerical I.D. tells you all you need to know. That's fine don't buy a Manticore. Those of us who think the 2D adds value and have posted as such to why we think that will find out for ourselves it's utility.

  12. You can't audibly always tell you have two targets no matter how the detector is configured. I.D. and tone will normally jump around a lot. Iron alone can do that. If I.B. is set low you can make a lot of iron targets sound good from certain directions. Still I.D. tends to jump around and is better one way than the other. Set I.B. to high and you could get potentially good targets iron grunting.

I still don't get why your saying a visual aid is not a good thing, and that a certain configuration will allow you to know all you need to know just by numerical and audio alone. If you can see you have two targets close and interfering with the numerical I.D. and audible I.D. of each other I think that's a useful feature. I don't think I.B. is going to help you much on multiple targets as much as single targets. I have always ran I.B. on the 800 at F2-0. That's pretty low. I don't dig a lot of iron even with an I.B. setting that would be considered low enough to make you check a lot of falsing iron. The thing is I'm not 100% sure it's not two items close together regardless of the tone and numerical I.D.. In some situations the screen would tell me there is two targets not just one falsing iron target. In the case of the 2D screen showing two targets I can make my decision to dig or not based on additional information.

  13. There was a comment early right at 3 minute 45 seconds that kind of baffled me. Mr. Lawrey said something to the effect that the coil was strengthened because the Manticore puts more power in the ground. Does this mean it has a different type of winding or heavier/more windings than the Equinox coil?.

  14. I have no idea how international shipping and time frames work. Do they fly them over or do they come in on a container ship? If it's a container ship I can see them taking a long time to get here. I wonder how many have actually been pre-ordered in the U.S. thus far?

  15. Wow I never had a problem with ML80's! They've always worked and sounded fine to me. Maybe my hearing is better than a lot of folks hearing. I have heard some very deep and faint signals with the stock headphones. I hate to sound like a Minelab fan boy, but if headphones choices are keeping you from buying the Manticore or any other machine I think that's a little silly myself. The audio from a detector is not an orchestra, and I call B.S. if anyone tells me they can tell a vast difference between the quality of a beep between the stock phones and other choices. I'm not saying there is none, I'm saying it won't be much and how much does it matter? I have some Aiwa headphones I used with the Nox from time to time. Yes they sound different and somewhat better, but I don't think they ever improved my finds. I use the stock headphones way more than I do the Aiwa's.

  16. Silver where I live is usually decently deep. That goes for nickels too. Depth is the best discriminator where I hunt. I pass all shallow/surface targets listening for the deeper targets. I have a Manticore on pre-order and doubt I will use a discrimination pattern. At least not for awhile. I will hunt with the horseshoe button engaged just like I do with the Equinox. I will probably use 5 tones like I do with the Equinox too. I have never jelled with more than five tones.
