  1. Welcome to the Trime club! Heckuva Barber, the only ones I've ever found were in our coin collection. 😀 Might put one in a Ziploc and bury it to see how they act. But then I'd be detecting a coin in a Ziploc... ðŸĪ” I didn't know what a Trime was either until I joined. Great finds.
  2. Ha, she does the arranging and she's good at it! 😀 Just flipped out the trusty Benchmade, cut the top off a 1/4 full water bottle, sliced off a handful of narcissus and stuffed em in the bottle. I had the golf cart so I had a cupholder. 😁 Last year she told me to get the grass as well, and leave em long.
  3. Not sure what you're asking. I got waders for river hunting early in the year when the water is cold, there are a few spots I want to check out. Soon the people who have summer houses will be here, and boats will be everywhere. Just testing today. I wanted to see how difficult it would be.
  4. Wow that custom cuff is awesome. If you wave it over it, the Equinox will find it... 🊄 Good stuff!
  5. Thought of one thing to add. When you have someone supporting your obsession with this hobby/occupation, never forget to show your appreciation. Probably my favorite find of the day, they grow wild here. 🙂
  6. Finally got a chance to hit the steamboat landing on the water today. A coincidental lower tide and great weather made an opportunity for me. It's a beautiful place, but fraught with risks from the poison ivy ground cover to the soft sand/muck in the river. There are places here that look solid but you sink immediately should you step there. Really didn't find much but didn't expect to. What I was more interested in was getting used to the gear and the conditions, I was wearing waders and using my scoop as a "stabilizer" as well. There are pilings, underwater holes, even saw an engine block out in the river. I only went a little above knee deep today. The water is clear but silts ahead of you as you walk. Water parallax makes it a bit difficult to locate where to scoop, but lifting the coil straight up after pinpointing helps. Found some pretty cool stuff, the steamboat mooring line cleat and the old blue medicine bottle were my favorite trash, the cleat was a 36. Thought I'd hit the jackpot. 😀 I worked my way over to the area I found some completely corroded Indian Heads just before I quit, I was only there about two hours. Got a 9/10, and scooped this very corroded "V" nickel, sadly not enough detail to provide a date. Identified it by size and the bust that was barely visible.Going back soon! They're planting the fields so woods and river are my only local diversions.
  7. Excellent thread, GB. 🙂 As a noob I'm still in the romantic phase where finding anything is a pleasure. I wonder when it will end, or if it ever does. Haven't had a total "skunk" day yet, but I fear them in my future. I am hoping my research skills and ability to "read" a place sharpen in proportion to the lesser amount of finds. Thus far I haven't found much silver, but it really makes my day when I do. A silver coin ended my last hunt. I'm trying it all, farm, field, random, beach, and soon parks or county owned properties. Gold might be out of the question where I am other than coins, but I'm not expecting them. I'll be thrilled If I find one! Didn't expect to get a gold ring first time at the beach, but my wife loves it. I have no problem giving away my finds. I'm glad people post thoughts on this site, it makes it unique among the choices.
  8. Spoon fed pigs! I like it! What year is the Merc? Nice finds.
  9. Yikes, 56 coins in one day, rings and things. Great job! Guess the GPX will pay for itself. 😁
  10. Well, we're more 4" topsoil, 1 foot clay, and the rest sand like a beach. The farms are Blue Marle, a rather nasty concrete like substance in the summer. Best to hunt in fall winter and spring here. ðŸĪŠ I'm near the Potomac and the bay.
  11. Welcome Ranger. I see you haven't posted in meet and greet yet, this may get moved there. I am in Virginia as well. You have quite a bit more time swinging a detector than I do but I'll give it a shot, as I want to help here. What Equinox do you have? An 800 has a bit more to think about (or not, preferably) than a 600. There is certainly no need to write it off just yet. One thing I have never had a problem finding is lead, from Gardiners to fishing sinkers to musket balls to the smallest piece of buckshot. Lead is highly inconsistent ID-wise, ranging from 7 to about 26. And brass? In 5 months I've found well over 100 buttons and countless shells. This is all in a farm right outside my door. I've been told it's an "easy" place. Brass will register as low as 12, I've had Tombacs come in at 3. Are you sure the place hasn't been hit hard? While there are no magic settings for the Equinox as I am sure you know from other detectors, depending on where you hunt (woods, field, or beach), the modes as default are perfectly suited to finding anything. Others here will help you tweak it later. In my area I use Field 2 for the 50 tones and run in all metal - all the time. That is it. No fancy additions other than moving iron balance to F2=0, but even that isn't particularly necessary. The dealer told me not to "overthink" the Equinox. That was sage advice. First suggestion when in the field you want to hunt is to do a factory reset (Hold power until FP appears from off), re-pair your headphones if using BT Aptx-ll, set your mode, then noise cancel, auto ground balance, and off you go. Quite frankly I have no idea how bad I jacked up the detector the last time I used it so a fresh start helps sometimes. I use my detector almost every day. There are a lot of reasons why certain things would elude you but from a reset that shouldn't happen. So glad you have access to a place like that! Be careful not to reveal too much about it. If I wasn't pretty far away I'd beg ya to invite me. 😀 Looking forward to your finds and experiences.
  12. Quite a bag o' lead you got there. Does the button have backmarks? That's a lot of work. Great stuff!
  13. Did a reverse photo search and got the same thing. Victorian era pin. Could have been a hat decoration in the 1800s. Cool find!
  14. I'm pretty sure I find them either deep or on edge. Indian heads are the noisiest coins I dig, with Zincolns a close second.
  15. True! I had a solution for that, I never took my headphones off, and acted fidgety so they would let me move on. 😀
  16. Great hunt. You never cease to impress with that GPX. Everything from relics to gold. When I was in Savannah, I really enjoyed interacting with people for the most part. The beach was packed, and a lot of people talked to me. I showed quite a few people the benefits of beach detecting for them. Some were interesting in their own right. But that's because I live in a secluded area, and my nearest neighbor is a half mile from me. I don't see many people.
  17. This is very true. They're "gettinbetters" 😀I'll dig a 14 and end up with a 22, no other metal in the hole. Is this just a quirk of the Equinox? I have also noticed that when you get a bunch of tones (default tone breaks in Field 2) over a target if you hear any ascending tone in the mix you should definitely dig it.
  18. Outstanding hunt! The Equinox is a beast of a machine, I don't think you'll regret getting one. When you find those large coins it really wakes you up! Remarkable mix of modern and colonial.
  19. Always nice to get a treat after digging all that trash. Ya got taco money! 😀
  20. Great coin, Stu! Never get tired of seeing them (or finding them, 4 now). Bet you found it near a large tree that shades mid to late in the day? Nice way to end your season in the field, mine ended today for one of them where I found one. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces12842.html
  21. Have heart, persistence will pay off. You will find silver. You're in the right era for Pistareens and cut Reals. If you had an Equinox I'd say dig everything 17-18. I have no idea what the Tarsacci ID would be. Wow, your posts are very similar to mine. Is this property near you? Great stuff. I haven't found many buttons lately.
  22. It's part of a Window Demolition kit. I believe it's in the 1900 Sears catalog. Your photo isn't blurry enough.
  23. Guess I'd have to coin shoot, I must have dug 100+ holes today. Don't think they'd like that. They have the "grasshopper" sprayer parked out there with lots of those chemicals that would grow an arm out of your head 😀 no worries, river hunt next week and I have to do some RV repairs from MY trip to Georgia... ðŸĪŠ Still got a few places to go here.
  24. Were it that I could, they told me they are planting it all tomorrow. 😕 Supposed to be a freeze tonight, maybe I'll get a break. At first they said they were just going to disc it and leave it for a bit, but the rain never happened here. We'll see what they do with the 175 acres in front of my house, maybe there will be a shot at that. Historically they have done "no till" farming, but this year they are turning the soil. Ya got me thinking about that arm cuff! ðŸĪ”
  25. Yeah, the top loop was broken. As If I didn't have enough lead to carry. I didn't think I'd ever get any silver out here!
