Treasure Found In Massachusetts Attic
F350Platinum replied to metalhound's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Wow, why would someone call a detectorist from over 100 miles away? Groton is a long way from western MA. They shoulda called @schoolofhardNox 😀 -
Brutal day today, but the farmers came early to disc. 20 mph constant with gusts to 35, never got much above 50. Felt like March. Hunted along the other side of that road today, I have never found so many bullets but I dug them all because they ID'd at 21-32. 😵 I stayed on one side of the road while they disced the field on the other where I was last time. Got about halfway up the road and hit a solid 18. Dug my first 1980 memorial. Swung around where I found it and to my surprise found 9 more, and what appears to be a rifle or shotgun takedown pin. Also found a piece of broken glasses frame there, I can only imagine what was going on that day. Got a pistol ball, a 7-30 Waters cartridge, a piece of decorated copper that could have been a ring. A small pin, some kind of jumping frog or entity and a large wingnut rounded out the relics: My battery started to get low, I started early. Went back to the house real quick and got my backup charger battery, it's power delivery and can charge the Equinox 3 times. Just taped it on and went back. 😀 Rural engineering at it's finest! Made the Equinox heavier, but you play, you pay. An hour later it was fully charged. Up by the trucks and my golf cart I made my find of the day: 1943 Mercury Dime. All's well that ends well. Oh, and the trash, never dug so much: I counted 21 bullets.

Light Finds Day For Me (coins, Relics)
F350Platinum replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
I've got some info from the state library, it's difficult to navigate. I'll be avoiding Historical societies except in my will. 😀 Everyone knows everyone here so even a visit to the county records is a problem. This is all to respect the privacy of the property owners, some of whom have asked me not to get others involved locally. -
Light Finds Day For Me (coins, Relics)

Last year it was soybeans. They have a couple of brand new combines, so it was the perfect storm for me! I just started in August and got permission in November the day I finished my yard. Really a lucky coincidence. I have over 400 acres to hunt right outside my front door. This year it will be corn. 😵 I have a week to find the gathering places if they haven't already been bled dry by the previous detectorist. They pushed all the buildings into the ravines sometime between 1967 and now, unfortunately the ravines are ridiculously steep and would be hard to hunt. -

I've been using every resource I can, but sadly most is word of mouth. I've yet to hit the county records. There is almost no history of this area in print, and much was lost in a courthouse fire. What I do have is historicaerials.com which led me to 3 farmhouses and some great finds. The oldest photos are from 1967. They do show the old fence and hedgerow where the track was. It was a straight track by all recollection. Some of the latest Intel was there was a training field. Saddest part is that the surrounding buildings and house were hit hard by a person who spent 3 weeks there without real permission and claimed nothing was found. The silver lining is that the field (and the track) was planted during the time the person was there, so I have a chance to find a few things. The spectacle buckle proves that. I am grateful to the farmers who have owned this spot since the 1940s. They are helping me any way they can with no expectations, and may let me visit other property they own. Sounds like you have a great place of your own! -
Maybe the finds were light but the trash was heavy. I'm getting nervous that the farmers will show up and I'll be out of the fields for the rest of the year. I've never dug so many bullets, all either vintage non military, or brand new black powder, mostly in the 50 caliber range. I was hunting a roadside in this field near my house today. There was a horse racing track here long ago, the farmer "killed" the side of the road it was on, not sure whether he did it so I could check it out, but we did discuss it a while ago. This is only half the road looking back to the entrance, I'm pretty sure it's about a half mile long or more. This field is over 200 acres. Didn't find much: A fired musket ball, a ramrod tip, an odd shaped bullet that was interesting enough to keep, a 1912 wheat penny and an unidentifiable wheat, and my favorites of the day, most of a 1600s spectacle buckle and an 1800s 2 piece button. Looks like the button was decorated but bronze disease has taken its toll. Just before I wrapped up the farmers stopped by and gave me some great intel about this area. They figure I have another week or so before they plant. Great guys!

Nice silver. Guess most people pay attention to the surf and coin line and don't consider the entrance/exit. That's where I found my gold ring, and foreign money. Great finds!

Jamming Metal Detector Use
F350Platinum replied to WhiteRabbit's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
For sure police are too slow to respond, my county has a 45 minute response time because we have so few of them. We have a few options here, so it is still safe. However, my cameras have not only identified suspected home invaders, but they also cause early "turnarounds" in my half mile driveway. I see the turn marks almost weekly. Takes em a few seconds to realize they should have smiled. 😀 There are flash options to let there be no mistake. Sorry to see so much disrespect for the law and decorum in general where you are. -
Welcome! I started back in August of last year and also have an Equinox. I've hunted both beaches and farms now, and I have to say that if it is there for the finding you will find it when you get the hang of it. Best of luck to you, and we hope to see photos of finds from your hunts!

Jamming Metal Detector Use
F350Platinum replied to WhiteRabbit's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
I use cellular deer cameras for security. If someone tried to steal or damage them it would be too late, the photo would already be sent to me. They are easy to hide. They are relatively inexpensive and some last a long time (up to a year) on lithium AA batteries. Non-cellular cameras are less expensive. All can be bought with a steel box that makes them tougher to get to or damage. -
Still gotta dig. 😀 True though. Backyard too. Just wish I was finding more coins...

Think I found the ultimate future detector: https://www.amazon.com/Detector-Handheld-Waterproof-Accessories-American/dp/B092MYSDT2/ref=mp_s_a_1_12? SIX antennas!! 😀 But seriously, improvements to accuracy would be a combination of a magnetic scan to prove iron, and a density check for aluminum? Not sure how that would be accomplished. Looks like sonar is beginning to get in the picture, fishfinder merging with metal detector.

Unfortunately they only mention Bluetooth 5, no Aptx-LL. Won't work with Equinox. 😵
-
Those are .308 blanks. Are you hunting a military rifle range?
-
Or smart... 😎 Living where almost everything can kill you... ? Hat's off to ya mate. 😀 Y'all are definitely bold.

I'm careful. I will get it but only got a little when Chase was here hunting with me. He tells me he is still getting it from his gloves. At that time there was no indication at all that it was the ground cover. 😵 This spot only gets bush hogged once a year. When they do that it looks great, but the vines are everywhere.
-
I don't think so. Attempted to use silver polish on the first piece, and it just took the "Patina" off. No stamps or .925 marks. It was a 25 on the Equinox tho. 🤔

Awesome. Shoulda been my title. 👍

It's an old landing for Steamboats (1800s) on the river near my house. Photo shows poison ivy (red colored leaves) covering the ground. About 8 acres total, 3 privately owned properties. I'm looking into what other activity occurred here, just up the hill in front of my house are a lot of finds dating back to the mid 1600s to late 1700s. All sandy loam, easy to dig with a good root shovel. Did I say Poison Ivy?😀
-
It's been pretty hunted out for silver, but IHP's turn up. I've found a few here. It was one of those really "iffy" signals. Pulled out some iron before getting the penny. Can't wait to get more in the river. Need a good low tide.
-
Thanks! Yeah there's a lot of stuff here, just got started really. I have an Equinox 600.

Decided to make a day of detecting today. It was a pretty nice day so I first went back to the hill behind my house, but didn't search there. Instead I went down a ravine in the woods to a spot where there might have been some colonial activity. It was supposed to become a boat launch when my area was developed but it never happened, the road to it is almost impenetrable now. Hacked around for a bit but found so few iron signals I decided to move to the landing. The beavers were getting mad anyway, I could hear them slapping their tails against the ground. I was hoping to get a good low tide to hunt the beach but it never happened. Wind was wrong and the tide didn't go out much, so I went to Plan C which was to just randomly hack around the landing. It's starting to grow a low cover of poison ivy, so I hunted for the most part where it was sparse or not there. Didn't do too bad! Got a huge tack buckle, a small D buckle, old faucet handle, a 1990 quarter that I dug out of the gravel in the road, a 1900 IHP, a military service button (WW1) backmarked "The Art Metal Works Newark NJ", my first ever complete 17-18th century shoe buckle (extremely fragile), and the puzzle piece of the day - the other half of a belt buckle I found there a while back. If you've been reading my previous hunts, I cleaned up that tiny anvil I dug in Savannah: Kinda disappointed it doesn't have any maker marks on it, was hoping for "ACME" or something. 😀 A while back I dug a sheath out of the river, it was so packed with black river gunk I had wait a while for it to dry to get whatever was in it out. Turned out to be this knife, sad that it's completely gone, it would be worth about $250. It's a 70s Schrade Old Timer 25OT Hunter.

Excellent title and great story. 😀 Hope you got contact info, you'll probably find that ring. Wonder if those sunglasses were lost or just left... 🤔
