Love Hearing The Soft High Tones

Nice 1 Real! I stayed indoors and sorted coins today to stay out of that nasty cold front here in the East. March in April. 😵 -
GPX Beach Hunt
F350Platinum replied to schoolofhardNox's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
You are the coin master. Great finds! You found in a day what took me a week (quantity). I'm sure the GPX is a killer, but there's a lot of talent there too. -
Historic Random Hunt

We had an old Rambler. We painted it with brushes, and my brother used it to go to college. He named it "Foxworthy" for some reason. It served him well, it was the first car I ever saw with fully reclining seats. Rustiest car I ever had was a Fiat 131 Super Brava, it broke in half on the flatbed when they picked it up to take to the junkyard. Good thing it didn't do that to me! -

Wow. A lot of car makers! You'd think it would be easy to find. Another person dug one and posted it on Treasurenet, got a bunch of replies but none really nailed it. Model T's didn't have lug nuts, they didn't come about until later. It is old tho. Oh well, won't fit in a display box so I'll add it to the box o' stuff... 😀 -
I have a 600, and the only time I ever have a problem with it is when I am near power lines both underground and elevated, massive cell phone towers, and too many cell phones active in one area on a beach. It is vulnerable as Chase mentioned. I can also see where I might think I am susceptable to EMI, when in reality I am in a VERY trashy place.

You've got a long time to find that Indian head. I hope you find many.

Historic Random Hunt
F350Platinum replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Thanks! The R object is a lug nut, so far research says they were marked right and left at one time. It is chrome plated, the photo isn't all that great. I'm also thinking "Rambler" for those of y'all who remember those fine rust buckets. 😀 -
I had to go get the first of 2 flu vaccine shots this afternoon so I decided to go out and get some relic hunting in this morning. Went down a hill in back of my house that I think is a trash dump site dating back quite a bit. There was a tremendous amount of iron present, but the Equinox did what it does best - tell ya where the good stuff is. Ground balance was about 53, I was in my trusty Farm 2 mode with all metal on, F2/0. Sensitivity 22. Got me a small pile of trash, I was only hunting about a half acre overlooking the river. Found these old Mason jar seals, usually I find them broken. Got a Big ol' ax head, put a penny on it for size: And now the finds. Bit of back story, the first button I ever found with a metal detector was from a WW1 military jacket... Thought I found another ox knob but it doesn't have threads. 1983 dime, beautiful 1939 wheat penny, a no date wheat. Model T Ford key, back code 69. Could be related to the hubcap I dug in the landing, and the, uh, model T Ford I found in the woods! 😀 Marble, came up with one of the coins. I think it's the kind that is in a paint can to stir the paint. It seemed to have a metal shroud around it, might have been part of the the can. Lug nut with "R". Military device clip, probably for a medal or badge. Centerpiece is the find of the day. It took a while to get the stamp to come up, had to use a grill brush and steel wool. When you find a dog tag it is obligatory (to me anyway) to find out who it is and attempt to find the family. This is a post-WW1 dog tag for the Marine Corps. The date is the enlistment date. Theodore H. Coleman, thanks for your service. 🇺🇲 It may be related not only to the device clip, but to the jacket button I found along the road back in August.

How Deep? Jewelry Hunting In The Water
F350Platinum replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Jewelry
You should be fine. Can't imagine it would be any different. I never really went in the water on my trip, the tides were so huge there I just estimated where one might be the day before. Found coin lines knee/waist level to high tide. The water was 150+ feet of from that line! Dug 51 coins, 3 rings and a button over 5 days. What you might have more trouble with is mineralization. My Equinox ran ground balance at 0-5. -

Peg’s Florida Fossil Hunts

That is a real nice floating sifter you have there, did you make it yourself? Nice finds! A paleology bonanza. 🏆 -
Thanks Chase. For me it was like using a new detector, it's a whole different environment. I'm just glad it was a bit easier. I find after one day back on the farms that relic hunting is a lot harder, involving a lot more analysis (and harder digging). Got waders, I'm going to hit the water before all the boat wakes and snakes and ticks. Debating mowing the landing so I'll have it all summer! 😀 I have heard recently that a lot o' pirates have been there nighthawking, probably why there isn't much silver. 😵 Glad you got one!

My wife is a fabulous person that has supported my interests since I met her. 🙂 I wish she could get out there with me, and she would if she could. Unfortunately age takes its toll, she has had 3 major repair surgeries: her right knee, left hip, and 5 back vertebrae. Only the back surgery was marginally successful, they left a drill bit in her hip, and her knee was so badly botched she had to go to a wound specialist for a year. There are a lot of great women out there, it's just that they have to find you. 😀 I'm one of those people whom a woman has to hit me in the head with a brick to get my attention. I have always been focused on adventure and doing stuff.

Gold Rush Camp Finds

Go to the beach and get you a big fat ring. 😀 Have you ever tried to find the era those Chinese "cash" coins were minted? Newest would be about 1911. -

Haha, I'm 61, aching muscles are daily now. Since I go out almost every day, it's not so bad anymore other than an arm cramp now and again. I used a Limbsaver sling at the beach because I wasn't moving as slow as I usually do. When scouting it's the worst. I do get "Trigger Finger", my right ring finger locks up on me overnight, and it hurts to straighten it. Fixed that problem by wearing that huge tungsten ring I dug at the beach. 😀 -
I was hoping to find some older stuff, at least I did find an old military button. Not only is the beach very clean, there are supposedly a lot of detectorists there. Saw a guy swinging an Equinox with the 15" coil on it, don't think he found much because I hit that spot earlier in the day. I watched him dig for a while, but he didn't pocket anything. Honestly I found most of my coins and rings not by hunting the water, but by estimating the tide level at peak beach time from the day before. I learned a lot, and it's a heckuva lot easier to dig the beach than the farm! Got the coil coin from Etsy, someone laser cuts them I think.

Whooo, what a week. Back home from the beach, I didn't post my last hunt but I found .99 in change. 51 coins total, 3 rings, military button and some small stuff. No silvers. 😵 Got a 50 Centavos piece and 1 South African Rand, so I scored over $5. Oh, and an Anvil... My wife got food poisoning (she is ok now), my RV water heater element blew, and the outside faucet decided to crack and blow the knob out. Filled the underbelly with water. That lovely trifecta made us decide to head back a day early. I love beach hunting! It must be my luck but GB never went higher than 10, I only got EMI near a water tower with cell service on it. Clean, clean beach. You got what the Equinox said you did for the most part. Got many more beaches in my future! Today I hit the farm, decided to grid a farm house where scouting didn't turn up much. All I found in 4 hours was one 1994 dime and one button. I got a 36 on the Equinox, thought "yay!" And dug a huge crudely cast lead ingot. 😀 It's about 3" wide and is heavy. Yep, back on the farm. I guess we all have these days, you should see all the bottle caps and aluminum I dug to get this. Yikes! When I got home I had this waiting for me: It's a 1954 silver quarter cut to the Equinox coil shape. It came with a bead chain, I replaced it with a snake chain. Thus far I have only found two silver coins! Maybe it will be a voodoo talisman for the future. 😀 I thank everyone yet again for their advice and encouragement.

Nice finds again! And family participating to boot. That curio cabinet is really sharp. The Bowie is almost a sword! Wow. -
I agree, but electric fences are right out. 😀 The other thing to consider is the barbed wire indicates a desire to keep people or animals out, so it's protecting something. It would be a sign of traffic, but I would try to get inside where it was to start looking for foundations. Ridges, rises, and level areas. When you hit lots of iron you've found a barn or farmhouse! I mentioned it once before, find large old trees that are on field boundaries. Search where the shade would be after mid day, if there is any grass it will be greener than the other areas. I've found old coins and buttons there. Picture someone taking out their handkerchief and flinging their pocket money!

I chose the Equinox 600 mainly because it is waterproof and it has a feature set that is very simple. I like the sounds it makes probably because I am a musician. It's probably more an aesthetic decision. I like how it feels, both figuratively and literally. Every detector will find something. My Garrett Ace 400 isn't waterproof, doesn't ground balance, but it scored some of my best finds. I'm just not a fan of the toy-like sounds it makes, it's a harsh sound without nuance. Kinda like nah-nah-nah ding! Yes!, and you get a pull tab. 😵 This all sounds high-falutin, I'm sorry. So far I've used a Bounty Hunter, the Ace 400, and the Nokta Makro Simplex. The Equinox feels more like a real analytical tool than any of the others. The 800, it seems, takes it to another level. I'm just starting out myself, I hacked around a long time ago but now am in it for good. There are others here with a wealth of info on many other detectors, I'm sure there are many other choices. 🙂 I feel I am right where I need to be until fish finders merge with detectors. 😀 The proof is in the finds I guess. Not doing too bad!

Great tale, RVPopeye! I can almost smell yer pipe. The Maine coast is a beautiful place, even when yer timbers be shiverin'. Fair winds an' following seas on your next hunt.
