  1. Thanks Steve. Y'all have been a great help. It's kind of a unique situation here, the tide is literally 7-10 feet. A hundred feet of beach or more at low tide, next to nothing at high. Early on at peak low the above was my view back at the beach. The umbrella is sitting at high tide! 😀 What I ended up doing which found me the coin line was going where my waist to knees matched up with the high tide line. Scored a bunch! The water was about 75-100 feet past me. These tidal pools produced some stuff but the real sweet zone was a few feet from the top cut. I found older coins in the pools.
  2. Well folks, I solved the problem. Thank you all. It was exactly that the cover I had on there to look cool was messing up the display. Took it off and no issues today. On with the show! 😎
  3. Thanks! You're "low country"? Lucky dawg. Tried to move either here or Beaufort but the market wasn't right. You can go out almost every day. Probably find the Cartier in Hilton Head... 😀 Not going to the pier, that beach has too many people. Parking is horrible this week. I go to North Beach at the light/fort, and this hard to get to fishing beach.
  4. I'm determined to get some gold, but know the realities. Any find is a good one. She likes the quiet time when I'm gone. 😀
  5. The beach I'm going to this morning is mostly Atlantic waves. Definitely know to "fish" the troughs and never turn my back to the sea. 😀
  6. Yep used to do a lot from my boat in the Potomac river, then changed to surf casting when I switched to an RV. We camp almost exclusively at beach campgrounds. It's easier to clean finds than fish! When I think of all the stuff I could have found on the beach the last 15 years or so... 🤣 I've only been metal detecting for 8 months now.
  7. I'm using the sling to keep from putting the detector down. It doesn't bother me or restrict my swing, I have the Equinox coil set to about 1-2" above the ground with my arm fully extended. I'm 6'1" so that isn't an easy task. Another perk using the sling is that no one can snatch my detector. The scoop has a long reach anyway. 😀
  8. I've found a lot of them! Thinking of opening a fishing store 🤔 That's where all the heavy metals end up?
  9. Thanks Joe. As I wrote in another thread, I welcome all questions, comments and abuse. 😀 Even abuse can steer one in the right direction! Loquacious posts are also fine. I don't think I've ever come across a tl;dr post here. I've got one of those Calces365 pouches that has two zippered pockets and mesh to let the sand out. I have communicated with the person who makes them, he is really nice. They beat the Garrett bag by a mile on the beach. It looks like you're just dropping stuff in the bag. Great points and food for thought for tomorrow. Just looked at the weather and I even get one more bonus day this week, I'm afraid I'm going to bore everyone to death with my posts. That's why I try to think up clever titles. 😎
  10. No worries Al. I invite all questions, comments and abuse! I got what you were saying. Between you and Dan I think I am all set. 🙂
  11. Yes I do. Off it comes and on with the small protector. Thanks!
  12. Well there IS a doofus looking at the screen 😀, first thing I thought was that my sunglasses might be polarizing it but realized that they are only photo gray and don't polarize. I'll try a screen protector, I do have one of those covers that you put over the control box to protect it so I took the bubbly screen protector off. Hey I'll take any suggestions...
  13. I kinda did a little jig, but there was a crowd of people watching. I've been (I guess) lucky that I am the only one out here doing this. 🙄 Only saw one kid with a Bounty Hunter a couple days ago.
  14. Thanks! Found it on eBay for 24.99, but it works for me - it's flawless. I'm really stoked with all the great advice I've got from this forum. Every day I go out I find something that at least makes the effort worthwhile. That 1967 penny was shocking. When I was doing a lot of fishing, being asked "catch anything?" multiple times was kinda trifling, but I never expected the amount of people that would stop me metal detecting. 🤪 It's nice to be able to say "Every time I do this!" 😀 Hitting the main swimming beach tomorrow. I think I'm ready for it. There is another HUGE one down the road, but so many go there it would be tough to get anywhere. I've been coming to this island for 15 years now and I have never seen so many people.
  15. Got a 600, been taking it to the beach every day. About 3-4 hours in with the sun beating down on it, the LCD display becomes hard to read. Should I get a hat for it? 😀 Seriously, is this a common issue? When I turn around and it's shaded somewhat or of I let it cool down for a bit the screen comes back, but it's annoying.
  16. Another beautiful day here, what a week so far. Every day is getting warmer. Today I put my water shoes on, got my CooB scoop and Limbsaver detector sling and hit the beach early with the Equinox. I went to the fishing beach again because I really haven't done all this and it was better to try it out in a place with fewer people. The main beach is loaded by 9 AM. Hit those odd piles in the sand again, found nothing but crusty Zincolns so I moved down to the water. That area must be a place where detectorists dump junk coins or something. 🤔 Wasn't disappointed for long, one quarter, my first Jefferson nickel ever, and a beautiful 1967 penny, along with the 2014 penny that must have been recently dropped. The '67 was DEEP. I found the coin line and those 4 popped right up, one after another. Sad that the streak didn't continue. Using the scoop was pretty cool, the sling kept me from picking my detector up all the time. Dig and sweep. It was especially great near the water because I didn't care if the hole filled up with water. What made it even more interesting was dealing with these: Virtual mini tsunami when they pass. All the water disappears and then the 5 foot wake comes in. Fun. Carrying the scoop wasn't bad either, it weighs about 3 pounds, half what the M16 I used to carry weighed. At one point I thought I wasn't going to find anything else, I turned inland to avoid some fishermen, and bam. Got a solid 6. Y'all gave me such great advice, I dug that sucker and got me a nice Tungsten ring. Fits perfectly. Thanks! I hope to find my wife something nice tomorrow.
  17. The blue bottles are a bit more valuable than the rest, they were colored with cobalt. Great stuff! Worth the work. 👍
  18. Yes the river has about a 7-10 foot tide. I'll have some more info tonight, found some stuff. I'm wearing water shoes, especially at the fishing beach. Main beach tomorrow, thanks for the tips!
  19. I take pictures of most of my finds, didn't today because I had a lot of junk and the trash can looked inviting. That's a good plan though! No worries here, they know the benefits. They don't pay for scrap where I live anymore. It is soft and not brittle. Not sure what metal, it was a 15 so probably lead? Maybe tin and aluminum?
  20. Thanks! I'm in the fishing area, just testing out my gear. I'll have a post tonight but the day "rings" true 😉
  21. Getting ready to hit the beach this morning. Bringing a CooB scoop today and I had a thought - how far out do ya go? Is there a certain depth that is better than another? Don't want to "get in over my head" here 😀
  22. That was a quick phone snap as I was leaving, I heard a boat coming and saw the couple watching it. Sun sets toward the city, you get kinda a West coast vibe on that beach.
  23. You are absolutely right. It isn't frequented much by beach goers, it's really the Savannah River. There were some there but it's quiet, there is no parking to speak of. Mostly condos and rental houses. The reason I'm there is the possibility of finding relics. I found one button but I'll move on. Today I'm bringing the scoop and will probably go in the water to get a feel for surf scooping first though. Bet I'll find a lot of lead out there! I have a sling for the Equinox.
  24. This made me laugh today when I saw an inert "practice bomb" in a local shop on the island I'm on. Hope nobody buys it and forgets it on this beach... 😀
