F350, you get an award for finding two of the gnarliest but very cool coins that I have seen posted in some time.Β πŸ˜‰

Thanks much LC. The half Reale is kind of typical for the area, a couple of which I've found with tooth marks in them, possibly animal but reportedly human πŸ˜€Β The Merc took a beating from fertilizer.

It's a shame they destroyed a "Lodge Scent" to cut whatever it was they were cutting. 🀣 Can't help it that name is clever. πŸ™‚

Very nice finds there 350! Coming from the perspective of a longtime relic and artifact hunter as well as a collector I feel that the partial copper is definitely the star of the show.I would also have to concur that your deduction about its purpose is spot on.There is probably not a whole lot of us out here including myself that would have come to that conclusion so quickly so good call.

    Thanks Doc! πŸ™‚

The first coins I ever found in this area (about 200 feet from my front doorstep) were cut Spanish Pistareens. The next coin was an 1805 half cent not too far from that. I also picked at least 3 half Reales from that field. It's a field above a landing where all sorts of commerce occurred, but no historical record of it exists, just some names. Researching cut silver is what led me to this conclusion, I could be wrong of course.

This field traded through many hands, I got all my intel on it from the farmer whose family has owned it since the 1940s. They told me of a steamboat captain who lived and was buried there, horse racing, and I worked with a descendant of one of the owners before the farmer who also had a farm here. It's a river peninsula surrounded by water with deep ravines all around, but at least 200+ acres of farm. I'd like to investigate more but the farmer appreciates my discretion, as do many of the other people that have given me permission to search their property. The other issue is that a large portion of recorded history for this county was lost many years ago to fire.

As usual, a great hunt and even better report.  I like the the 1/2 Real (no surprise there 😁).

I don't quite understand why a large cent would be used as a backdrop for cutting coins.Β  Why not an anvil, for example?Β  The implication is that they used a knife to cut the coins?Β  As opposed to a shear....Β  Admittedly I have no idea how they did things back then, and likely there wasn't a single method but rather 'whatever works'.Β  The speculation/research/identification is almost as fun as the finding.

Coincidentaly I'm having dinner tonight at the house of a friend of my wife's.Β  Her husband is a blacksmith and I'll get a tour of his shop.Β  He's not an historian but he might be able to show me some tools they *could* have used for cutting coins.Β  Worth an ask.

Thanks GB. I read a long time ago somewhere that they usually used a knife or chisel and some sort of hammering device (not many rocks here so possibly a tool) to cut coins. Reeding coins was a result of unscrupulous activity, shaving bits off and/or cutting them inaccurately. πŸ˜€ An iron or steel anvil is a possibility of course, but you could throw a coin on a log, and probably not bend the coin. 😁

Copper being a softer metal probably took it easy on the cutting tool. The varied lengths of the cuts imply a knife blade over a chisel.

I admit it is speculation, but I think a pretty good guess. πŸ˜€

Dang, F350, more stunning finds, very well done again! That "cutting board" large cent has to be a super rare find and another Reale too! Just incredible hunt, congrats! SInce we haven't got the "WOW!" emoji I requested, I made my own, so here ya go...

    Β

    Wow Emoji-100.jpg

Thanks Cap'n, took me a while to think of a snappy title. 🀣 I'm always happy to add another half Reale to my collection.

Winter doesn't want to leave here without a final kick or two, it's been great this year though having a lot of 60 degree days since November. Almost forgot what winter was except for the cold snap at Christmas where it got down to 9. πŸ˜€ It's heading back to 60 in a couple days, but it's a race to get detecting in before they plant the fields now. I'm looking forward to spring and summer camping trips, much easier on my feet!

Beautiful finds 350 the spanish coin looks to be holed? The best part about your finds is they are close to home. Also you will have endless hunting it seems as it's impossible to cover every inch of those large fields and s they plow them more stuff will turn up. also not much modern trash to contend with...sometimes when a little birdie tells you to do something its good to listenΒ πŸ™‚ ...the hunt that almost wasn't.Β

    strickΒ

    Thanks Strick! πŸ™‚

My photos are pretty much extreme close-ups, the hole is a pit but doesn't go all the way through. The other amusing thing is the tooth marks in it from people biting it to see if it is real. πŸ˜€

I don't mean to downplay a Spanish silver find, but my favorite is the early large cent used as a cutting board to make change from silver coins, it's kind of a "Rosetta Stone" forΒ  what was going on there. Farther back in the field there are some buried iron pots with oyster shells and there were lots of buttons there. There must have been some pretty large gatherings but not as large as another place I have a couple miles up the road.

I've found other evidence such as thimbles and lots of horse tack, all stuff that cherry pickers seem to leave behind. Very few silver coins have come out of here, 2 mercs, an SLQ, 2/3 of a Trime, and this one Spanish coin.

There is a lot more to cover, it should give me random good finds for quite a while, I'll just have to put the leg work in. πŸ™‚

Just when you think it couldn't get any better for you, you hit it out of the park again.

    Great hunt once again.

Good luck on your next outing.

Thanks VL, you threw down a gauntlet recently, so I had to pick it up. 🀣 You're an inspiration. πŸ˜‰

Shame that relic hunting season is almost over for me. This one has been phenomenal.

Nice relics and older coins F350!!! That is a very good afternoon's hunt, and silver....especially old silver dating back to a time when Daniel Boone was settling in Kentucky... is always welcome.

This made a very interesting read and your photos are excellent.Β πŸ™‚Β Thank you... Jim.

    Thanks Jim!

This time I found the "cutting board" for coins, probably the most interesting thing I've found to date, but not the oldest. Most folks don't know that Spanish currency was used right up to the 1850s, and the only way to make change was to cut it. That old large cent saw a few silvers, shame the parts weren't everywhere. πŸ˜€ The first coins I ever found detecting were cut 1 Reale pistareens.

I'll probably never beat the half coin I dug in another field a while back (1607), lost very early in this countries' history, but it sure is interesting to try.

Man, you are on a roll this year!

Thanks NC, it seems like it. I hope I'm not making this look easy, Chase mentioned that I need to somehow illustrate the amount of walking and "dead time" it takes in large fields like this to find anything of value, the trash only tells part of the story. 😡 You pay for it in shoes and anti-inflammatory medicine πŸ˜€

The golf cart only gets you there. 😁 Saved about a mile of walking.

What was going on here about 200 years ago is really beginning to gel in my mind, so yeah, the finds seem to be getting better. I wish I could find photos that tell the story in a more detailed way.

Some nice finds! Probably not, but at first glance your oval piece looked like a lever to a carbine rifle. HH jim tn

    Thanks Jim,

I was thinking scissors or something but it doesn't appear to be broken. The three nubs on it make me think it was centered in something. Some obscure tool maybe πŸ€”Β

There have been a few mentions about scale in this forum, maybe I should make good πŸ€”20230313_065851.thumb.jpg.d5fa2e5df9bc2af9d3239ed3e8dca0cb.jpg

And since the WSA II puck can also drive wired earbuds and other wired headphones, it's the perfect accessory for the D2 and WS6 Master rigs. Well done XP! 😎

Exactly what I did. I could not be more thrilled with the Deus 2. πŸ™‚

    Β

Cap'n if they don't work you're obsessing over a square peg not going in a round hole, or whipping a dead horse. πŸ™‚ You tried everything with those headphones. The creative phonesΒ willΒ work, as long as you didn't get the 4.1 model. If they say V2 on the box they will work.

are you using the deus though with the sound blaster jam v2? and not he nox??Β

Sorry for the photo showing them with the Deus, as Chase wrote I have used them with both. I merely posted that photo to show you the wrap tape. Took the picture for another post to show they're ok with the Deus 2 as well with an Aptx-LL transmitter plugged into the backphone puck.

so the above creative headphones definetly work? dont want to buy another set and have the same scenario, as the august ep650 was led to believe they also definetly work, haha, forgive my sceptisism, haha

Yes they do. Even the BT 5.0 version. I have two pairs of them bought months apart.

They're on-ear and have bass boost, they will give you some situational awareness and sound much better than the XP backphones. I can wear them all year.

You might want to wrap the top band with something they're not uncomfortable by themselves but I used some wrap tape.20230309_115228.thumb.jpg.4d5fad2cb1e1513b8c95481144e7aeae.jpg

Here's some more info on them:

thing is that the headphones pair to the nox within 20secs or so, should the + symbol come on as soon as they are paired also, or can that take a little while longer? every video ect ive watched shows the + comes on a soon as paired, and once again very grateful for your responses to advise on my query

Some headphones just don't play well. Yes, the + should show up at the same time. There might be a special setting on the headphones?

I don't have experience with the headphones you are trying. I have about 4 different types that all pair well, even earbuds that I don't like, and I think they discontinued them. I provided USA links to the headphones I use, here's my favorite on Amazon UK:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lightweight-Bluetooth-Headphones-Multipoint-Connectivity-5-0-USB-C/dp/B08QRQMLVY

I looked for the others I know work on the UK site but only found these. πŸ™‚

im in fact in UK,Β  so many links to things on amazon here in the forum would involve insane shipping to me, or even sometimes not available for me to be able to purchase, the August EP650 should work though right? is anyone here using them with the 600 ? as that be helpful to verify, and thanks very much for your reply, im very grateful

Aha, thought you might not be in the USA. πŸ˜€ Amazon UK charges extra shipping? πŸ€” I'd look them up there.

Looked up your headphones, the reviews say they work with the 600 and 800. Not sure why you're having that problem, maybe your tea break was not long enough. πŸ˜‰

Make sure both the headphones and Equinox are in pairing mode, the best way to get the Equinox in pairing mode is as I described above.

Also make sure you reset your headphones first before doing anything, or at least determine how to put them in pairing mode when the Bluetooth icon is flashing on the Equinox.Β

It can take anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes to pair, also make sure your cellphone is not in the room or had Bluetooth turned off. That may also help. πŸ™‚

  16. Welcome to the forum! The 600 is a great machine, depending on what you are planning to do with it, it should have you covered just about everywhere except prospecting for gold. I have one.

I've used mine relic hunting in farms, on the beach, and detecting campgrounds which are pretty much like parks. Started in my yard learning how to dig plugs that won't leave evidence of my presence. 😁

Don't be afraid to ask questions but do use the search function with key words to see if a question you have has been answered. πŸ™‚

  17. Welcome to the forum.

Are you looking for over ear or on-ear headphones? This is the place where you'll get the most info. I assume you are in the USA.

These are on-ear and work very well, they're about $40. they're also noise cancelling.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B085DKHY5K

These are my favorite, they are over ear, very light, very loud, and are also around $40

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08QRQMLVY

When pairing headphones for the first time you should probably do a system reset, restart the detector, then start the process. Turn on wireless/Bluetooth and wait for the wireless icon to go away. Turn on the headphones, hang them from the arm cuff, and walk away and have some coffee or something, when you come back they will be paired. πŸ˜€ Always know how to put your headphones in pairing mode, it helps later. You won't have to do that first time out of the box.

I have a 600 and have used the on-ear headphones for two years now with no problems.

  18. Nice hunt Cap'n! Cool you're testing all sorts of programs on the D2, you have a favorite?

Looks like you got a decent bit of taco money there, and it's always great to find the paper stuff. πŸ‘ Do y'all dig or just pop targets? I may branch out to other counties' parks this year, we don't have any. 😡 Kids are great at losing stuff.
