  1. Welcome to the forum! I pulled 4 small nugs from the fines end yesterday afternoon. I've had more success in the fines than in the coarse ends. Dry washers miss a lot especially when the operators don't know what they are doing. Check it all! Kick or rake down the piles until nice and flat then check them out.

Clay ball showing small nug recovered from fines pile. Actually, there were two nugs in there:smile:!

This is one one the reasons why you want to hit the fines pile. Clay! DWers nightmare.

    Good luck!

  2. Took the new Nokta Fors Relic out for a short (3 hours) hunt yesterday afternoon to a post Civil War era site. Very trashy and we have hit this place with multiple detectors. The easy pickens are pretty much gone.

The Fors Relic did not disappoint! Keith and Monte's impressions and assessments regarding this machine are right on.

Here is a pic of the more significant finds from yesterday. Two more eagle buttons and a under wear button from a spot that is a carpet of square nails and has been hit hard by various machines. It jumps on copper and lead like these .56 Spencer cases and bullet. It has superior unmasking qualities and the processor is super fast. Nails are not a problem. We (the machine and I) struggled a bit with flat, rusty tin reading as a good target, as all machines do, but I think that will improve as I learn the machine.  So far, super impressed! I'll share more about the machine as I put more time on it. HH!

  3. Thanks for the comments, everyone!

Chris- Yes, I'm back in the gold. I took a little break from chasing gold and have mostly been focusing on chasing relics lately as a couple of family members purchased detectors and we found a great old post Civil War era site that has produced some very nice finds. Very  different "social" type of hunting. It's been fun. Hope the gold gods down south have been treating you well!

Well I think the original Fors Gold and CoRe will have been discontinued now the Gold+ and Relic have become the more refined units. Though there's till a few new ones from dealers trying to offload the early range at a cheaper price.

Yeah the line up became confusing early on John, that's for sure ...they certainly moved extremely quick in re-defining the range, but when you have an individual units capabilities matched up against any weakness it may have for you within a certain area or use, in line with the other models, it makes it very easy to jump on one specific detector.

An example is the AUGoldfinder. I want it's dials and especially that ground balance dial exactly in the centre spot it is so I can ride the balance, set up directly in front of the handgrip on a straight shaft.

It's the ergonomic alternative to the Gold Racer for me, as I'll be using it for gold detecting only with a large coil.

Without that AU choice, I'd have chosen the Gold Racer.

Great to be able to have choices.

I not aware that Nokta said they are going to discontinue the CoRe (or anything else) since the introduction of new models.

  5. Terry,

The 5000 is a great machine!

My take on the topic, having put the CoRe though it's paces, is basically one of ergonomics. All of the machine's you are considering are excellent choices, IMHO. I strongly considered the Racer2 because of the control panel/display being on the handle. I went with the Relic based on Keith and Monte's reviews as to the programming being more tilted to relic hunting as that is mostly what I do with a VLF.

Unfortunately, Arizona doesn't have any beaches....YET..... still waiting for California to slide off in to the ocean:tongue:. So, I can't comment on the beach hunting bit.

Good luck with your decision! Fun having all these great choices!!

  6. We went back to the Calvary out post where I found the eagle buttons last weekend. This time I was armed with my X-Terra 70. I sold my FoRs CoRe to my buddy because I ordered a FoRs Relic from Chris at AZO...which should be here at the end of the month.

So, my buddy, brother, and I armed with two CoRes and an X-Terra gave it a go. No eagle buttons this time but I scored a beautiful silver broach some .56 Spencer cases (one un-fired), Ox shoes, and an old iron wrench. Everybody scored Spencer cases and bullets plus another un-fired Spencer Long.

Beautiful weather, great friends, metal detectors, and a great site...Awesome!

I am writing something up that may help and will post soon so stand by.

The short answer for me personally I have chosen to go 56 kHz Gold Racer for gold nuggets and jewelry, and 14 kHz Racer 2 for jewelry and coins. If I was trying to replace both with one detector, it would be the 19 kHz FORS Relic to do it all.

Thanks, Steve. Looking forward to your write up.
