  1. I believe that if it was that big of a deal ML would have said so or included a smart charger or something. As Steve said in a previous post, (para phrasing) ML and others put LOTS of thought in to this machine... I doubt they would blow it on something as obvious as a battery charger.

Nobody questions what type of USB-wall charger they plug their tablet or phone in to. I've got a bunch of them from different phones, tablets, etc. and  never look to see which goes to what. I've got some USB chargers that plug in to the accessory ports in my truck. I charge my wireless head phones, cell phone, tablet, and anything else that has a USB charging cable. I've NEVER had a problem over many years of charging stuff. Some of these USB chargers are advertised to charge your phone faster than others, etc. Therefore, all of these devises must have "smart" circuitry built in ( including the NOX). The charge to the battery is regulated and it shuts off when the battery is full. ML recommended which one to use in the manual and, to be safe, I will go through my "electronics junk drawer", where I have phone and tablet chargers dating back to the 1860s, and find the recommended one.

I'm no electronics guy, but I'm guessing that the little USB-Wall "charger" isn't much more than a invert-er that changes AC to DC and that the "smart charging" happens in the device circuitry?

I'd bet even grade schoolers have a pile of those laying around. I think some people spend their lives looking for something to complain about.

Yep. That was my thought as well.

What I'm saying I have other detectors that has a battery in it that you have to charge the same way as the Equinox.  I've yet to have trouble with them. That's all !

O.k., cool! Thanks for clarifying, Chuck!

I have another detector and I’ve never had trouble with it . I’d worry about something more important like learning our Equinox.

???. I'm not sure exactly what you mean, Chuck. I have other detectors, too, that I've never had trouble with.

  4. It was late when I got home home last night so I didn't read through the whole manual. But, isn't the 600 the same as the 800 just without the prospecting mode? Why would the non ferrous tone settings be any different between the two? Hopefully. I will get a chance to read more today.

  5. Man, that is a smoking deal! As was already stated, there is a bit of a learning curve but once you are over the hump you will love it. I had mine out this past weekend at a public site with the 8x6" SEF and hit a hand full of clad and a 43 Merc Dime which is pretty rare here in AZ. Great buy! Have fun!

  6. I have to agree with Gerry and Steve. I have become an early adopter ( especially of Minelab ) in the last few years. In the last 10 years I have purchased 5 Minelab units ( soon to be 6 with the Equinox ), 3 Nokta units, and a Garrett. All have found me nuggets and/or treasure. All are capable detectors. The Minelab units ( IMO) were/are the best...I still have three of them. As Gerry mentioned, each unit was/is better than the previous one.

I'm not sure I understand FTB's statement, " those who are not benefitting from the review". I understand that not everyone may be in the market for or need/want a new detector but everyone benefits from an honest review by the experts. ( I probably misunderstood the statement. If so, my apologies)

As to selling a detector for "40%" of it's original cost... knowledge comes with a price. I never buy a detector or coil expecting that it will "pay for itself" ( though a few have more than done so ) or keep one that I don't "jive" with until it does. This hobby is supposed to be enjoyable. You never know if something is better than what you have until you try it. Compared to hunting big game, deep sea fishing, boats, etc. this hobby is very inexpensive!

Anyway, I believe that the Equinox will be another winner for Minelab and am eagerly waiting for it's arrival.

  7. I asked the same question, Johnny, and never did get an answer other than for when you forget to recharge at night and are running low...makes sense. I think it all boils down to some people just like to tinker and "customize"  their new toys... though, the new options serve no real practical purpose. Like a Jeep with $20,000 worth of "off road" up-grades...lifted 6", suspension, winch, 35" tires, etc...and then they never take it off road. But it looks cool. Sometimes, though, the tinkering does lead to some very practical ideas and mods and the manufacturer incorporates them in to the next model for the betterment of the machine/industry.

Just like the CTX or GPZ or my phone - I charge the Equinox every night. I have never detected long enough in a day yet to have it go dead. If you only detect a few hours a day you could go several days between a charge but I think it’s best for myself to be in the habit of putting it on the charger after every use, so as to never get caught short.

I may look at using a battery pack as a counterweight for the 15” x 12” coil, but then I will want a heavy charger brick because the main goal will be to counterweight the coil. The charging capability would be a bonus.

    My experience as well.

  9. I have to ask the same question...How many rely on aux power regularly?

Personally, I have never had to go to aux power on a rechargeable system as I recharge before every session. Even while on multiple day camping/ detecting trips I charge that day's depleted battery back up to full in the truck at the end of the day. I have never run a fully charged battery out in a day of detecting on any machine and I hunt hard (all day long with a hour or so break for lunch). I do take an aux battery just in case of a faulty battery. Do you guys hunt more than 12 hours at a stretch or do you not recharge after every session? Not sure I understand the need for aux power other than total failure (break down) of the main battery. Thanks.

  10. Mike,

My suggestion would be to give Chris Gholson a call over at Arizona Outback or go visit his website...arizonaoutback.com. Chris offers first rate customer service and has been a Minelab dealer for a long time. He could answer any questions you would have regarding Equinox orders.

  11. I've already asked this in another thread but seemed more appropriate to ask here...Is the prospecting mode on the E800 a multi freq mode or can it be selected as such? Would there be any advantage to it being MF? The E-TRAC seems to ignore mineralization very well compared to VLF but is not good on small gold jewelry. So, I'm wondering if the proper frequencies were used in MF (Multi IQ), would it be less suseptible to mineralization and more sensitive to small gold?

I couldn't find this info anywhere yet on the E800 " Gold Mode". Thanks!
