Did not care for the yellow either...so I tried to create an Apex Pro by painting my control box with a rubberized paint. Not that it necessarily needed it, but I like to think it is more water resistant as well. I also silicone glued a rubber bushing to the audio port so when my headphones are plugged in it's a tight fit and water intrusion less likely. I would prefer all black for the Storm.

Thanks, Bob. Good advice. I do much the same as you. I can't dig them all on my iron (and beer can) infested beach, but I occasionally dig the 'probably big iron' signals and have been richly rewarded. One such find was a large heavy Gucci silver bangle bracelet that put me halfway to paying for the Apex. In my first summer with the Apex, the finds paid for the Apex many times over. So I bought another one...and finally retired my Sovereign GT. Love my Apex(es).

Hi Bob, Thanks for offering to share your knowledge. Fellow Apex user and happy to see the machine getting some love. What is the iron technique in pinpoint you perform to check for big iron? Checking the target size…or more to it? Cheers, Mike

That's concerning. Mine hasn't seen action in about a year...so I pulled it out to check and the coil detached without issue. Pushed the coil in towards the handle and rotated. The gasket was still lubricated. Plastic looks ok...no cracks that I can see. Mine has never been difficult to remove though... Maybe an issue with the casting on yours? Hopefully Nokta will take care of you.

NEL replied, but considers the serial number range(s) of the defective coils "confidential" and will not provide this info. All I can offer for those interested in avoiding a defective coil is my Super Fly (which I believe is not defective) has a serial number of 9xxxx. Happy hunting with your Apex @karlchick. If you decide to buy the coil from Regton, I hope it's fit for your purpose.

NEL has responded with this.... "The problem with large targets in MS mode has already been resolved. The Regton website describes a problem that was in the first batch of coils. Now we have fully working coils for Garrett Apex." I asked if they could provide a serial number range for the 'first batch'. I'll post again if they provide that info.

I'm aware of the situation in Ukraine and wasn't suggesting they're taking too long...if it sounded that way. I have previously been in touch with them during this time and they've been responsive/helpful. I'll post here when I hear back.

Ah...I didn't realize until now Regton has this warning on all of the NEL coils for the Apex. So, did they actually test every model? My Super Fly doesn't have this issue...so it can't be all of them. I have been using my Super Fly for more than two years and it loves silver in MS mode. I have air-tested my coil and hunted extensively in the wet sand with excellent results. I doubt my coil is an anomaly. NEL is still operating and shipping coils for the Apex. Still waiting on their response though...

According to Nigel Ingram at Regton only the "first batch" of Super Fly for the Apex have this issue. He wasn't able to provide a date or serial number range...or additional info about the issue. Still waiting to hear back from NEL...

If you don't hunt the beach, maybe the 'glitch' (if it exists) won't be an issue for you. I'm going to hold off on buying my second one until I know more. Hopefully Regton and/or NEL will respond with more info. I bought the Super Fly in hopes of resolving a silver-on-edge issue...and it did that. I later bought the Raider coil and it also handles silver-on-edge without issue. Regarding depth....I haven't done any head-to-head testing, but believe the Super Fly probably has the advantage. It has also proven to be very stable and well-built. And, for a beach hunter, it offers something no one else does...a coil cover that fits the coil so well it takes on almost no sand. All my other stock coil covers seem designed to do the opposite.

Thank you Gold Seeker for making sure I saw this! And hello karlchick! This has not been my experience at all....either in testing or real world. I hunt almost exclusively in MS in wet and dry on the beach and have found plenty of silver...including large fat rings, Gucci dog tags, bangles, and many silver coins including a large commemorative. The notice on Regton's site leaves me with more questions than answers... Who brought this to their attention? What is considered 'large' silver....an ingot? Is there any video demonstrating this issue? Is this true of all Super Fly's ever sold or only a certain production run/period? First and foremost, I'd like to see a video demonstrating the issue...or at the very least, example targets it can't detect. With that info, I could do my own testing. I'm interested in knowing more. It's my favorite coil and I was about to order a second for backup. I'll try to find time this weekend to email Regton and NEL to see what they'll tell me.

Thanks DSMITH. After posting I switched to my Windows laptop and updated after scanning then allowing. I'm new to the Mac and thought Apple's warning was a hard-stop, but after digging further I found you can allow it through as an exception (screenshot below) similar to Windows...just not as easily. Nokta/Makro can register with Apple to eliminate the issue. No idea how difficult that process is though.

Agree. I'm not likely to use the 11" coil often if at all and the 6" is too small for my needs. I will want an SP22 8.5" DD and/or SP24 9.5"x5" DD and we don't yet know if/when they'll be offered. I'm considering cancelling my pre-order until these coils are made available. And it probably wouldn't hurt to wait for some (NDA-free) real world testing either.

9. Manually adjustable ground balance...long press of the ground balance button and adjust with + - buttons. The beaches I hunt are littered with iron/aluminum trash and a clean spot to ground balance is near impossible to come by. I'd like to be able to dial in the value I know works. 10. Improve/upgrade the coil cable to box fittings (for different reasons than palzynski's #8 above) In less than a year the fitting is corroded, the screws and the washer under the nut against the box are rusted. The detector has never been dunked...just salt air exposure and rain. Upgrade to stainless...or at the very least, sleeve/shrink tube the fitting to protect it...and change out that washer at the box. 11. Lastly, better penetration/depth in volcanic black sand. My Apex struggles for depth compared to my other detectors...and I'm not trying to go deep. In some areas, especially in the dry, I may only get surface to a couple of inches. In the same areas, I can get at least 6 inches with the others. Maybe this could be addressed with a firmware update after some volcanic black sand testing by Garrett?

Absolutely need the SP24 for my (pre-ordered) Legend. Considering it's popularity, I'm very surprised and disappointed it isn't already available.

I purchased my Super Fly for the Apex from valerius1906 on eBay without issue. If it isn't currently listed (it wasn't when I was looking) just send a message and he'll create a listing for you.

Apologies for the delay in reporting. The Super Fly did resolve the issue with identifying silver on edge. Super Fly TIDs are in red. The lower numbers sometimes occurred when targets crossed the middle of the coil, but I found that I could clean up the signal and get it to lock on at the higher end by using the heel/toe or left/right edges of the coil. In any event, all targets I’ve tested now ring up as diggable targets regardless of orientation to the coil or position under it. Fat/heavy .925 ring (TID flat 92-99, 92-98; TID on edge 1-30, 76-96) Thin intertwined Tiffany .925 rings (TID flat 94-95, 95-98; TID on edge 1-33, 77-99) 1941 US Silver Half-Dollar (TID flat 98-99, 99; TID on edge 'iron range', 99) 1968 US Silver Half-Dollar (TID flat 98-99, 96-99; TID on edge 0, 46-99) 1971 US Silver Dollar (TID flat 99, 99; TID on edge 0, 52-99)

Happy to see you're having success with the Apex. I ordered the Super Fly for mine, but probably won't see it for a month.

I haven't bit the bullet yet kac, but will share once I do. The Reaper looks nice. Would be nice if Garrett would post coil weights on their website. I contacted customer service regarding the Raider coil and was initially told it weighed 2 lbs. When I questioned that as unusually heavy for the size and asked for the weight in grams, the same representative then said it was 'about' 453.59 grams. I pointed out that was 1 lb not 2...but the representative continued to state it was 'around' 2 lbs. I gave up. I'm guessing 1lb/453.59g is likely correct but can't say with certainty. Garrett is likely to lose coil sales if customers are being told it weighs twice as much as competing coils. In any case, the Super Fly is still lighter.

Thanks kac for your thoughts on the Super Fly. I'll likely go with the NEL b/c I know them to be well made...and it's the lightest. We'll see what happens.

I hear what you're saying Chase, but the scenario in this case is rings/coins ID'ing purely as iron...and not popping non-ferrous. The beaches I hunt are black sand and littered with iron debris large and small. If I turn on iron audio, it is absolutely constant and not useful. If anything pops non-ferrous I'll hear it with iron audio off. By the way, your advice leading me to 5khz is appreciated. I tried it this morning and it was more stable than expected. It did false occasionally, but not nearly as bad as I expected. I'll continue to play with it. My tests were far from a controlled scientific study, but when the ring/coin was inline with the coil I rotated it to see when it would switch to a non-ferrous signal and it was near horizontal. It is a challenge for detectors, but the chances of encountering on edge...or not fully horizontal...items is high where I hunt. If a different coil can do a better job, I'll make the switch. I'm not convinced a new coil will resolve the issue, but it doesn't hurt to investigate the possibility. No harm done except to my wallet:) Silver makes my day, so I hate to think I'm missing stuff. Thank you for the link to the Xterra guide. I'll give it a read. Also agree...maybe Garrett can tweak something via an update, hopefully without adverse (whack a mole) consequences. I won't hold my breath though...apart from Thrace, I haven't seen anyone reporting this as an issue....yet.

Hey guys, Thank you for the replies. Appreciate the advice/info... The Detech I'm considering is the 11.5" in the video, so very close to the NEL Super Fly in size but the NEL is 50g lighter I believe. I also have a couple NEL coils I've used on my Sovereign GT and like them. Detech only came into the picture because of the video. There are no obstructions on the beaches I hunt unless you count the black sand, copius amounts of iron debris, and the carpet of can slaw:) I was happy with the stock Viper coil until I saw this video and tested my Apex. If a different/wider coil can do a better job identifying items on edge, I'm interested. On edge the TID's were solidly in the iron range, so I wouldn't even hear them as an iffy signal. I normally hunt in MS, Zero with iron audio off by default. Sometimes I switch to Custom 50+ and cherry-pick when I'm in an area thick with can slaw. Either way I won't hear iron at all. That said, I did air test the different frequencies and all of the coins gave good TID's on edge at 5khz. Your theory proved correct, but I doubt I'll be hunting in 5khz. I was swinging the coins/rings oriented inline with the coil, but just tried turning them perpendicular to the coil. The target ID's generally drop, but not into iron range. All diggable signals. I was swinging 4-6 inches away. 1-33 means the TID was not stable, but stayed within that range without exception (no high tones).
