  1. Hello, Instead of black friday shopping, it is always better to be detecting somewheres, and thats were we went. Headed back to a diggings that ive hit for many years where you can really test out a new detector. I detected there many years ago with a gb 2, then a tesoro lobo, gb pro, and last year original Fors gold. The ground runs very hot. It will ground balance between 85-89 on the meter. The gold mostly runs really small. But I have found a few bigger ones before. It is really challenging for a high frequency detector like gb 2. The lower frequency detectors always are more reliable at this place. Last year the original fors gold performed very well running in boost mode with sensitivity at 85. This time I tried out the new Fors gold plus for its premier at the hill. Naturally I tried all metal first which was just too chirpy. Next was the familar boost mode, but ran the sensitivity at 80 instead of 85. Also had to leave my idmask at default 10. Performance wise it was a good setting for new fors. The new solid 10x5.5 seems to be a hotter coil then previous fors spiral coil. It does a very good job at hitting the small stuff, without a problem. It does seem to be stronger and louder on small targets. Fors plus does a good job at 19 khz as gb pro did. But fors plus does get the edge at small gold on depth and sharpness of the signal. 27 pcs for the Fors plus made for another great day. 2.7 dwt total
  2. I was just going to write about it. But thanks steve for answering in a more descriptive way then my answer. Just running the plus and previously the original. I could tell a nice upgrade in detection capabilities. The new coils seem to be really hot on all size targets. And not any hotter on mineralization then the previous model. I ran the isat on 3 for the location. But I could see where it would have advantages at other hot mineralization and low mineralization areas, with its setting. Overall a great detector. It does have the capability to find tiny tiny gold.
  3. Thanks for the comments. Tv-no trees just bushes that are commonly found around gold areas. Damn things will grow in about any soil or climate. In alot of places they will give up the indication of shallow bedrock. And possibly a gold area. The old miners washed away alot of surface layers in places and alot of different trees wont grow there no more. But manzanita does not mind taking its place. In alot of areas they bulldoz the brush, then it comes right back again. I swear you cant kill the stuff. Chuck , no I live up north. Steve, thanks but I just had some good luck. And a good detector. There is hundreds of old gold diggings around, but most of the good stuff has been cleaned out thru the years. Some by me and the rest by detectorist that tresspass,or claim jump claims. Here locally( they know who they are) instead of getting legal permission as I do. But once in awhile you hit a good spot. I think you have found alot of good gold in recent times. Where here it is mostly little stuff left. With an occassional nice piece. Hope you have some good luck next time out
  4. Hello, I received my test Fors gold plus from Dilek on friday. So had a couple hours saturday to Try it out. Unfortunately didnt find any color on Saturday. But had a few hours on sunday to redeem my self at a different location. Beings I have tested the last Fors gold last year, I was quite familar with the controls. This new plus fors was really aimed at an attack at the gold bug pro. After a few hours with my new friend, I found out this unit kicks gb pros butt. I ran a gb pro for few years, so I could definitely tell the difference. The new fors plus is similar to original fors, but at 19 khz , it seems to excel. I tried the concentric coil out at a part of the diggings that is pretty mellow ground and snagged a couple microscopic pieces. They hit hard and the target volume wasnt a whisper. I was very impressed. Next I ran the 10" x 5.5 dd coil in the hot mineralization It performed very well. I still run my sens. Up at 80-85. It is a little chirpy on certain hot spots, but otherwise performed flawless. This new coil seems to hit hotter and louder on targets then the last fors gold spiral coil. Even at the edge of the detection field. I did get a chance to try out the isat setting. It seemed the best setting was default 3. For where I was detecting. All in all the new Fors plus is still built very well and balanced great. Fors gold plus and I will have another great year testing. So far 12.2 dwt is a good start. 12.2 dwt total. Bigger piece 10.1 dwt.
  5. Oh yes I remember that problem on my ol gb2 years ago. Had to replace the switch once. Also the battery compartment door would come open once in awhile and 1 of the batteries would fall out. I would be swinging and see a battery on the ground and think wow someone lost a 9v battery. Then discover it was me. Good post for anyone new to a gb2 to watch out for.
  6. All very good tips! I see new people here and there and I think 80 percent have the get rich quick concept. Then when they dont find any or much gold, they get frustrated and quit. Usually they put their detector in the closet or sell it. It does help new detectorist to find a piece of gold. It really boost your confidence. Once you have some confidence, it helps you get to the next piece of gold. And so on. For most getting together with a experienced detectorist or join a prospecting club, would be a good option to help them. Or if they can't find these, then a great gold detecting forum such as this could be the best thing. Plenty of experienced people to help them here. Also maybe locally there is a detectorist that you can pay for a trip to get that hands on experience. I know there is a experienced gold detectorist in my area that offers to help new people for a fee. I feel that you really need to get on the gold for a new person no matter what resource you use. Or new detectorist will lose interest. Detecting is many things to people. For me it is just so enjoyable being in the outdoors. Especially with a buddy. Also all the research, field research then the rewarding finds for your efforts is great piece of mind. The outdoors is very relaxing away from all the hustle and bustle. So even on a bad day gold detecting, you still get the enjoyment of the great outdoors. so far in 30+ years I haven't got bored with it. Good luck to all the new breed!
  7. Awesome! No park is safe from you. Good luck on more great finds
  8. Nice finds Norm! Looks like your upgrade was an upgrade! Hope ya find more
  9. Nice gold bado! I was lucky that I never saw a buzztail all year. Good luck on your deer hunt!
  10. Had the same problem Ray with my gb pro 10x5 coils. Happened to 3 in a row. Last one didnt happen till after 1 year warranty. So I was stuck with it. I never go to creeks. Mine got moisture from dew and detecting in the rain. Once it dries out inside in a few months it works again. The sealant fisher uses to bond the top to the bottom of the coil seems to dry out and crack. Then it leaks. Thats where I found a micro crack where moisture was getting in. I have heard many others had the same problem with gb pro 10x5. Was a great coil before the problems.
  11. Yeah steve it is definitely getting colder outside. We definitely need the snow pack and alot of rain. I hate to say I would like it to be a really wet winter, cause it screws up my gold detecting time. But we really need it bad. Last few winters it was like spring in Dec/jan. We seen manzanita bushes blossom in December. Usually they blossom in February. Ill just have to go when the weather is good. Last good el nino in 97'-98 was a good washing down of the hills and alot more gold was exposed. So atleast next spring we can look forward to that. I know reno gets really cold so hope you stay warm this winter. I will look forward to your wintertime writings. Good luck
  12. Hey scott good job on finding some gold. I have had some episodes with vlfs acting up when things are wet. And other times not so much at the same area. Couple years ago after a big winter rain. We went detecting next day in the sun. But everywhere that we swung the gb pro detectors it was noisy. They never stopped making noise. Sounded like a slot machine. We detected the same place many times before after rain with no problems. I talked to a couple other detectorist that detected the same day miles from me and they had same issue with a gpx 5000 and a gb 2. The noises only sounded off over the ground and not in the air. The same area was fine a week later. I talked to a weather guy about the storm and it originated from russia. So maybe they had some radiation issues. I dont know. But it was weird. Never seen that happen again. Good luck.
  13. Hey chuck. It appears the future nokta/ makro detectors are more of a better design for the settings display. But on fors gold, I never really had to change much once I set it for the conditions. If I did I just held it like I was detecting and rolled my arm up so I could see the screen then made adjustments. Only thing is I swing left handed so all the display settings are upside down while commencing this procedure. Good thing I can read upside down. Not sure yet what detector that I will be using this season. But im sure it will be a nokta/makro. Till then ill still use the fors gold.
  14. I'm thinking about getting a new Fors Gold plus or waiting for the Makro racer. Once in awhile I use my wifes 5000. So I can practice up on my pi skills. But she is very protective of her 5000.
  15. After a very busy summer and fall, I had a chance to get out for a couple hours between the rain showers. Went to an old spot that I havent been to in awhile. We hit the place pretty hard before, but fors gold always finds a little more just a little deeper. Found 7 more for 2 dwts. Going to be switching to a new detector this season. So it was fun detecting with Fors Gold one last time. It was a good year and a half with the Fors. But it will have to be the backup now. Hopefully it rains alot more. The ground is still as hard as concrete.
  16. Good finds bado! I cant wait to get back out in a few weeks after deer season. Still warm this time of year here in cali. Again good job with your sdc.
  17. The armrest fits me ok. But that is a good point, the cuff is alittle small. I never tried the strap. But I guess it should be long enough for anyone to use. Yes chuck as soon as they come out I will let everyone know how is going with fors plus.
  18. Batteries was never an issue with the original Fors Gold. They supply Varta brand rechargeable batteries with charger on the pro pack. I detected more then 8 hours a day for hundreds of hours in the past year and a half. and the battery level never left 100 percent on any day.. Next time out I would throw them on the charger for less then 10 minutes to top them off. I never had to buy 1 battery for the Fors Gold in hundreds of hours. The gb pro runs on 1 9v and the gb 2 runs on 2 9v and I ran both for years and never really seen a difference in performance between them. I found micro gold just as well with gb pro with 1 9v battery. It probably has to do with the technical side of how much a detector requires for power. Doesn't seem to effect performance. Fors gold runs on 4 AA batteries that are 1.2 volts. I bought stronger AA batteries on amazon for it but it dont affect depth or performance. Not sure how the new Fors gold plus will be on battery life but im sure it will be about the same.
  19. Oh wow! This is exciting news. All the new features and mode have me really curious how it all works out in my goldfields. Im definitely going to get one. And build on my Fors Gold success. Im not worried about the carry bag or weather cover. I allready have them from my regular fors gold. Definitely interested in the optional concentric coil also. Hope it comes out soon. Ill be back in the gold fields after hunting season.
  20. Hey Jason I use my Fors Gold exclusively. But my wife uses her gpx 5000 with the new camo coiltek elite. She has had it since march/april. I know she used the coiltek 14x9 mono goldstalker at our different sites with much success. But after getting the camo coiltek she has had even more success at the same places. Seems you can run the gpx in sens. Xtra at most places instead of fine gold. It is suppose to have less emi also. It does seem to run quieter with little emi compared to other coils. I had a couple chances to detect with it myself and I could not believe how deep that you can find small stuff. I was finding birdshot with it. And the signals come thru clear and not a slight variation in the threshold. One day I forgot my fors gold batteries I had a chance to detect with the coiltek for a few hours. It is slightly heavier but I swung it all day without any fatigue. I never wear the harness so it cant be too heavy. Im not sure how it compares to gpz or new nugget finder evolution. I thought one day I would get Steve over here and test the gpz and gpx with coiltek elite together and see what the differences are on undug targets. Im curious myself. Thats if my wife gives her gpx up for the day. Good luck
  21. Nice nugget scott valley man. And I like the relics of long ago. I have seen hundreds of those old shovels thru the years. They all seem flat nosed from the ol miners diggin and braking their backs every day. Sorry to hear about your ribs. I have bruised mine years ago and it really sucks. If you even sneeze it is painful. Glad you got a chance to find a nugget. It keeps you going till next time. I hope to get out soon aswell. Been too busy with work and now deer season is open. Have to spend weekends off taking my partner in crime out hunting so she can shoot her buck. Congrads
  22. Nice setup! Do you have to arm yourself with bear spray or gun when in alaska? Or are there no bears in that vicinity. Unfortunately some places I go I have to protect myself ( personal choice) from stealthy mountain lions which I was attacked by a pair 20 years ago. And trinity co. Also has crazy pot growers and tweekers. I have had a couple incidents that looked like it was about to get ugly till they seen my partner and I guns. This has all been on public land. Its a wild jungle out here. Other then that I use a similar gear. I also carry in my backpack a spare coil cover, coil bolts, battery cover etc. Ill be glad when im done with long hours and all the projects I got going on so I can get back at it. Thanks for sharing
