  1. Nice haul coot. Good luck next time out aswell
  2. You dont want to be passing up bouncing around signals when gold detecting. You will miss gold. And any target whether it is iron or nonferrous will bounce around if its really tiny or right at the edge of detection field. Good find. Good luck
  3. I have found surface pocket deposits and only found a couple small pieces. The gold never moved. It stayed with decomposing vein. Even dug down 6 feet. Tried panning for fine gold. No more that was it. And sometimes in gold bearing areas, youll come across a stray nugget. Then grid the area and never find anything else. other deposits I found have the look of coarse gold indications, and is in a known coarse gold area, but turned out to just be all fines. Not one piece of detectable gold. Nature is funny how gold was created. Makes you wish you could've been there when it all happend.
  4. Hello After a couple months of too much going on and too much forest fire smoke to even see, finally got back out detecting with fors gold. We hit an old hydro mine that we only detected a small part of last year. The place has alot of iron junk but was able to pull gold and a bunch of lead out regardless. Detected for a couple hours for a 5.4 dwt day. It was a nice day, the skies are finally clear of all the smoke, and it was so good to see the ski blue again. Thanks to all the firefighters for doing a good job on the worst fires in 50 years. Amid the drought conditions on top of all that. I think fors gold was happy to get out aswell. Good luck
  5. Dean If your going to a spot that is pretty mild, You might try all metal mode (general on fors gold) I have never really had a chance to use my all metal. Everywhere i go is pretty hot ground, pocket gold deposits. Does core have a ground tracking switch? Good luck
  6. Agreed steve the fors does run a little sparky at high sens. I have learned to block it out and only hear the metal targets. A newer detectorist should probably start with the default 50 sens. And get to know the detector, then increase as you advised. One tip that I can add is if at any sensitivity the ground chatter in most cases doesnt sound off on consecutive swings. A target or hot rock will. Thanks
  7. Hey bado I run my fors gold in d2 boost mode most of time. But I run my sens. Up at 80-85 and my id mask turned down to 5 if the soil isnt too chirpy. Turning down id mask to 5 helps the tiny gold hit a little harder. Or the targets that are whispers become louder. Running my sensitivity up at 80-85 works fine for me. My soil usually is quite hot and ground balances with a # of 75-85. The fors gold is slightly chirpy when turned up at 85. But you know when any metal goes off versus the ground chatter. Atleast half the gold I found with fors was a jumper target id. It jumps back and forth from below 40 ( ferrous) to above 40 ( non ferrous) it jumps around for a few scenarios. 1. The gold is very tiny and the detector has a hard time accurately identifying the gold. 2. The gold is at the edge of detection range. 3. There could be a gold piece and iron lying near each other. I have found alot that would show 14-17 id on one swing then above 40 next swing. So if you turn up id mask above these numbers then you could miss the gold on the first swing. I tend to swing over the same spot with 2 swings to make sure that I catch the jumpers. If your detecting in a iron junk area you might have to try the settings that you tried. In the old iron infested area I still run mine the same settings that I run. I just listen for that beep mixed in the grunts. I have been successfully doing this. Another technique that I might use in a tin can pile is turn up the id mask to 39 so that iron is silent. I used the same techniques with my ol gb pro in the past. And with either detector I would catch those non ferrous targets right out of the tin cans. I dont use this technique in the regular gold field for if the id mask is turned up to excuse the ferrous targets then I might miss the jumpers. Good luck
  8. In the old days if I was detecting and I didnt have a rain protector kit for some of my older detectors I would wrap up my detector control box with a kitchen trash bag or somethin like it. It looked stupid but I could keep detecting in the rain. You should get some help from dilek at nokta real soon. Hopefully they can get you back detecting quickly.
  9. Hey jason Did you have the rain protectors on the box and handle? I know my fors gold is very sealed up everywhere but I dont think it is a good idea to go out in the rain without the rain protectors on. I dont know of any reset. But if you emailed dilek@noktadetectors then you should hear something back very quickly. They are 10 hours ahead of us on the west coast. I think so late this evening should be their monday and dilek will help you. Good luck, I hope everything works out.
  10. Very nice day! Good job. Yes that snake did a good job hiding himself. I hate when you just about step on one before they rattle. Luckily I have not seen one this year. Once again thanks for the pics.
  11. I never really messed with tailings from the old dredges much. But my granpa and his buddy worked on a dragline dredge in shasta and trinity co. Cal. They had some interesting stories about bigger nuggets going out with the tailing rock. My grandpa and his friend tried to convince the owners of the dredge to make the trommel screen alittle bigger and invent so sort of nugget trap for the bigger nuggets on the infeed. Cause they saw some bigger nuggets go out to the tailings while operating the dragline. Ive been working on getting into some rich tailings with bigger nuggets that should be in the tailings at one particular creek in trinity co. But the owner of the land hasn't quite giving in yet. But he knew another one of the men working on the same dredge that had same stories. Only bad thing is it is also the richest place in trinity co. For rattlesnakes. Lol. Maybe someday the owner will give us a chance to see what we can make of those tailings with a d8 cat he has and our detectors. Good luck.
  12. Lucky for me, i'm not highly allergic to poison oak ( not sure about ivy) in our area of north cali. There is poison oak everywhere. My whole life i've walked in it either metal detecting or hunting game. The only place I catch it is just a little spot where my detector cuff meets my forearm. The cuff seems to rub it in. Then I get a little break out. I have afterwards caught it again off the same arm cuff weeks later without even being near the poison oak. The oils from it seem to deposit itself in the foam of the cuff. I had to change the foam on a couple detectors before just to get rid of it. It would be nice if someone made disposable arm cuff covers. I like the one on my 5000. But its not really meant to be immediately disposable. Thats about it for my poison oak moment. Good luck!
  13. Maybe next you'll have some luck. Better get back at it in trinity. You've done really well there. And i'm sure you'll continue to do so. Good luck
  14. Funny. Lol. There for a minute I thought you saw a bigfoot. Bet the sign had people baffled.
  15. Congrads on your success. Hope you find time to do it again. Damn gophers! Been battling Them myself with vegetable garden.
  16. Maybe someone is trying to tell you two that a trip to austraila is in your future. Good find!
  17. Hell ya' Thats an awesome find. Hope you find much more from that spot. Congrads
  18. Sorry forgot. Nice piece of gold jasong. It does look very similar to shape of aussie. I find alot of pieces that look like animals. My first piece of gold long long time ago looks like a chicken drumstick. Maybe was why I ate kfc for awhile after that. Hey norvick. Thats good that you have vegetation indicators in aussie. Never heard of the ant indicators. But I have checked out some ground squirrel holes in known gold areas to see what they are digging out from a few feet down. I know of 1 mine that was started after they found gold from the squirrel holes sample. Good luck
  19. One technique that I use is patterning vegetation types. In our area certain trees and vegetation can give away fault areas or shallow bedrock areas, and deep mineralized ground. Alot of gold deposits here are made in the same type of geology. Certain trees and vegetation by size can tip off a goldfield. I have found gold far away from known diggings. The finds are fewer and far between, but usually is a nice patch. Sometimes it takes days to find one in unknown gold areas. Not sure if the vegetation trick works at other countries or states. But has been a good tool for me.
  20. Thanks for the comments. Hey tom no not too many large rocky diggings in my area. Lots of small rocks. Some gold targets I get are quiet repeatable signals. Thats why its important with Fors gold to turn down id mask as low as you can too make the deeper quiet signals and tiny gold more discernable. It may look easy but fighting thru thick brush is a pain. And the bears are down lower right now in the manzanita to eat the berries. I have come within feet of sleeping black bears. Theyll just lay there and hope you pass by. Getting too close is very dangerous. Especially when they chomp their teeth at you. Success at gold detecting is easier depending on how much you put in doing research and visual scouting. If you know what your looking at you can spot alot on google earth. Once you find a good coarse gold area then almost anybody with any detector can find gold. Once you get this down you can consistantly find gold. I know I have seen a couple newer members in the last year become consistent because of their effort. ( featheredfishead, nugget365) just to name a couple. They got it down. I spent years reading every paragraph of old cali newspapers to find gold finds details of the gold rush era. It gave me a good idea of where they found coarse gold. Then I walked around in those areas to find the places to detect. So far the research hasnt failed me yet. Good luck!
  21. We have had more monsoon season odd weather. Rained yesterday and cloudy and cool today. We'll take it. Time for more detecting. Went back to attack some more brush area of my cousins property. Detected With fors gold for about an hour before detecting first piece of gold. Then 10 seconds after that piece found another. Then it took awhile to find 3rd and 4th piece. Nokta pointer also . Complimented the fors gold nicely. All in all it was a nice low 80's degree day and 1.5 dwt of gold to take home. Hopefully we will get more cool temps this summer. Good luck!
  22. Thanks for the comments. Not sure about getting much detecting time in the rest of summer. Its just getting too dang hot. Hope for more 90 degree days. Then I can get out on a morning hunt. Good luck stay cool!
